Most Memorable Lions Games Ever??

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the site but love what I see so far and can't wait to get more involved.

A question for you though- If you were to think back over the past 30 years or so of Lions football, which individual games stick out most in your minds?  Things like huge comebacks, miraculous wins, crazy things that happened in the stands, blunder type games (Leon Lett type things)?

Thanks guys!!  Just trying to get some insight into what makes the Lions so special to so many of us!!

Welcome aboard, mjy123!

Boy, that’s a tough question. There’s the obvious… the win over Dallas in the ‘91 playoffs, Barry’s first game against Arizona in ‘89. But it’s funny how long the bad losses stay in the memory banks. I seem to remember them more vividly (maybe because there are so many to choose from!) The playoff messes like the 58-37 loss to Philly in ‘95 where they turned the ball over 7 times! Or the ’94 playoff loss in Green Bay where Barry was held to -1 yards rushing. Man, it’s tough being a Lions fan!

1) Detroit Green Bay playoff game in 1994, I think, where Favre heaved a late TD pass to Sterling Sharpe to beat the Lions. It got a spot on ESPN CLassic’s “NFL’s greatest games” show, and I got to relive the nightmare a couple of weeks ago.

2) Detroit 38 Dallas 6 in the playoffs, the last time the cowboys lost in the playoffs for a three year span.

3) The Paul Edinger FG game to end the 2000 season, aka the game that ushered in the Matt Millen era

4) Early 80s, Eddie Murray missing a FG against San Fran that would have given Eric Hipple and the Lions a playoff win against the defending champs….my first real heartbreak game as a lions fan…

3 standout games

Looking back I can think of 3 games that really stand out:

1.) Lions vs. Giants – LT interceptsa pass at the goal line and runs it back in OT on Thanksgiving. That just killed my entire day.

2.) 1991 – Lions vs. Cowboys – 38 – 6 final score. Lions looked like a REAL football team, complete on both sides of the ball. My proudest moment as a Lions fan.

3.) Detroit vs. GB – 1994 playoffs. Lions actually played very good, they should have won that game but, as if this game were to predict the future – the Lions couldn’t stop Favre over the next 10 years. I can still see Sterling Sharpe mysteriously wide open??? I physically cried and stayed in my dorm all night.

Some that stand out

November 27, 1997 (Thanksgiving)
Barry sets the record for consecutive games with over 100 yards rushing as the Lions make an amazing comeback against the Chicago Bears. I think we were losing like 20-3 going into the half and stormed back to a 55-20 victory in the second half. My friends and I almost left at half-time.

October, 1998 (@ Soldier’s Field)
My friend’s and I made the drive down to Chicago with tickets two rows off the field at the 50 yard line (behind the Lion’s bench). We were winning the entire game and ended up losing in the fourth quarter. The genius that was Bobby Ross put Sanders in for like 10 plays and 27 yards. The only game worse than this, that I actually attended, was in Arizona last year, when the Lions had negative rushing yards.

2001 vs. Vikings
I happened to luck out and get 2 free tickets (plus parking) to see the 0-12 Lions, naturally I jumped on the chance to watch my favorite team extend their streak. This is the only time I was happy to be disappointed with the Lions. We won and nobody left the Silverdome for like 20 minutes, it seriously felt like we had won the Superbowl.

hat one time they didn’t lose. No wait, they did. It was the first game my dad ever took me to, and I got a Lions athletic shirt and I thought it was so cool.
There were some pretty memoric falls when I remember my dad yelling sh!t at the TV, throwing sh!t oh MAN I remember one time they lost at the end of some game and we all look over at my dad who is just sitting there calm as antyhing and he takes his drink one handed and wings it at the TV and soda (or whatever) goes everywhere and he just started busting out laughing and I didnt know whether to do the same or run away I mean I was pretty scared but I think that was his way of saying I dont give a f!ck anymore.
