I May Regret This But...
I'm probably the only person here that still thinks the Lions will win a game this year. I'm probably wrong... as usual. But this is the NFL and teams just don't go winless outside of expansion - and even then it's a long shot. I'm just having a tough time believing that this is the worst team in the history of the NFL! I know, they're bad. I mean not just bad, but downright awful. Like that once-in-a-decade kind of awful. But THE WORST TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF THE FREAKIN' NFL? C'mon! I just don't want that hanging over the legacy of this team (what little we have) on top of all the other negativity that constantly surrounds it. To take a page out of Marinelli's book, the further we get from the light in the tunnel, the farther we have to go to get back to it.
If this team can win one - just one game - it will just be another in a long line of bad 1-15 teams. You know, the ones that are talked about from time-to-time, but ultimately forgotten. But if they do go winless, heaven help us. The media onslaught will crush what's left of the minute amount of spirit that surrounds the fans and players and it will be years before we dig ourselves out of the rubble. With the Detroit economy in such bad shape, the Lions and Fords cannot afford the barrage of bad publicity that would come with 0-16. Think about it. The loss in revenue will usher in more cost cutting. This means looking for cheaper candidates for GM, coaches and ultimately players. Yes, there is a large salary cap next year, but the Fords don't have to use it all... and probably won't.
My theory here goes something like this... As the players get closer to realizing that 0-16 is a reality, panic will set in. They will realize that they are on the verge of something historically horrific that no player wants to be a part of nor wants on his resume. Try finding a job after being the worst at something. I'm a finance analyst. If my company fired me and told my competitors that I was a part of the worst finance department, not only in the history of the company, but the history of the entire industry that I worked in, do you think I'd find work again? Very, very doubtful. Yet, that's what each of these guys face. Their pride (what's left of it, if any) is on the line here. They will start playing harder. I understand that it takes more than effort to win and there is a severe talent difficiency on this team in case you haven't noticed. But every NFL team typically gets 2-3 wins every year simply out of effort. Even the Lions can get one.
I still feel like Detroit's win will come. Maybe at home against Tampa or Minnesota. Maybe it will be a surprise against Carolina or Green Bay on the road... who knows. I just can't believe that we are watching the worst of the worst in NFL history. Nothing good can come of 0-16. It won't put us in any better draft position. It won't give us an easier schedule next year. It will do nothing but further tarnish the increasingly putrid legacy of our beloved franchise. I've said that I think that Detroit will win a game, but it was the Jacksonville game that gave me my first real thoughts of 0-16 and the realization that my franchise might set the bar for futility in this great league. Boy, I wish I there was a rehab center for Blue Kool-Aid. I need desperately to get off the stuff.

no matter the record...
I feel that after watching other teams with only 1-2 wins this season, we’re not the worst in the history of the league, or even this season. I see other teams possibly squeek out one or two wins, but get totally annihalated in the other 7-8 games. We haven’t won, and we haven’t looked pretty, but we’ve gave half of the teams a run for their money, and we’ve lost because of one or two plays in many of those games (or three in the case of kitna playing for the packers). But like you, I’m also a lions fan in denial, and I feel we could still win 1-2 games.

if you're going to be bad, might as well be legendary
That said, recall back to 2003, when the Tigers were challenge the ’62 Mets for all time worst baseball record….and with three games to go, the Tigers had two wins less than those Mets, and then suddenly pulled out a series sweep over a team that had already clinched a playoff spot to climb out of the WORST TEAM EVER dungeon. Three years later, the Tigers were in the world series.
Not saying a single win will catapult the Lions into championship contention, but the tale above is making me waver from my might as well be legendary pattern of thinking about these 2008 Detroit Lions.

I have to be honest
I too think this pathetic Lions team will stumble into a win, not 2 or 3 but MAYBE a single win. They’ve got 7 games left. Hell, they should have beat Minny (who give a 45 yard pass interference penalty with 20 seonds left in the 4th quarter???? Bodden never touched him. That was Bodden’s only good game). I think, and I agree with Drew, that 0-16 will forever tarnish this franchise like 0-14 Bucs (the replay of the kicker flailing away at the ball over and over and over and over). I just hope they squeek one out. When they do, this team better not celebrate.

0-16
is it likely? not really. is it possible? with this tem? oh yeah. i hope if they go 0-16 that this will be when someone in the organization actually opens their eyes and takes a step in the right direction. if that means hiring floyd reese or keeping martin mayhew then so be it. the way these guys play on sundays shows that they do not deserve to win a game. they are rarely making it competitive anymore. it is not football that we are watching…and it is extremely frustrating.
these players should not be allowed on another team. they dont deserve to play professional sports. you are dead on about if this was any other industry these guys would be out on the street.
at the same time what does it matter if they go 0-16? what has the lions ever done for you? they actually raised ticket prices this year! WCF never talks and has never hired anyone worth mentioning in good breath. he has never cared about detroit so why should we? i ask myself these questions and i am still a fan. i wonder what it would be like to be in steeler country or indy – where they actually know about winning and giving back to their city. i will always be a lion…no matter where i live…and no matter who is in charge….at least we have the red wings.
