The Lions and Marinelli are Characteristically Uncharacteristic

Man, this thing just reeks of desperation right now - and that is so not Rod Marinelli's style.  Am I the only one to think that this Culpepper/Stanton/Orlovsky drama is manifesting into something very un-Marinelli-like?  This is the same guy that makes first round draft picks and top name free agents earn a job.  Now he's just handing it to Culpepper?  C'mon.  This absolutely stinks of Marinelli being so desperate for a win that he's willing to throw any veteran quarterback in there - knowing the playbook or not.  He is thinking about one thing right now... his job.  It's just as simple as that.  Screw the Lions fans.  Screw the 2009 Lions.  Screw everyone but Rod.  That's how I feel about this situation.

Isn't it the ultimate characteristic of this team to always force solid people to do something uncharacteristic?  Thus the name of my fanpost.  Rod, from day one has had the pound-your-fist-on-the-podium approach to being the same, not swaying with the crowd, believing in your fundamentals as a coach.  With Culpepper, he is pulling a complete 180 on his credo.  What has Culpepper earned?  Nothing.  His 39 TD season of 2004 seems like a hundred years ago.  He is not that player today.  In fact, is he better than Orlovsky right now?  I could debate anyone at length on that one and probably come out the victor in most cases.

What makes this thing worse is that it seems that Marinelli & Co. are Kitna-ing Dan-O.  From Dan's own comments, it doesn't seem like he's that hurt.  But to further the Culpepper agenda, the coaches are leaking to morons like Jay Glazer (who will break any pathetic story - with or without credibility - just to get his mug in the news) that Dan-O could be out for several weeks.  Believe me, Glazer is getting this crap from someone in the Lions organization and my friends, it isn't a player.  The guys on this team are behind Dan right now.  They think he's improving.  So do I.  Culpepper is an intrusion.

Now, I am not one of those that think Orlovsky is our quarterback of the future.  I think that he has limited accuracy and potential.  This rant is not about that.  It's about Marinelli selling out to try to pad the win-loss column so he can keep his damn job.  Granted, I might even do the same thing were I in his shoes.  But I'm not.  I'm a fan.  And as a fan, I expect this organization to take the proper steps in rebuilding a piece of crap team when the season is in the tank so that the future does not look so bleak.  Culpepper is a bridge player.  He's a stop-gap guy.  He's an insurance policy, nothing more.  He should be here so that if Stanton is the guy, he's our veteran back-up.  If it's not Stanton, Culpepper should be here so that he can start while our '09 draft pick learns with a clipboard until 2010.  The fact that Culpepper is here to start on this 0-8 team tells me that it's about job security and nothing more.  That is pathetic and selfish.

I just can't see beyond these ridiculous decisions that are being made.  The thing is, I'm all for the Culpepper signing as a potential starter in '09.  That makes sense.  But to not start either Orlovsky or Stanton for Culpepper THIS YEAR is just absolute nonsense.  So here we go again into the '09 offseason not knowing what we have in either quarterback.  This means the following:

1. We will not resign Dan Orlovsky.  The staff obviously does not think he's better than Daunte.  You can't re-up a player when you aren't sure whether he can play or not.  We have simply not seen enough of Dan-O to know if he has the potential to improve.  Some other team will find out.

2.  We will use a draft pick on another quarterback even though Stanton remains untested.  So with Culpepper starting next year, you'll have two young QB's that will have to find time to get some snaps.  Think that will happen?  Hell, no.  Stanton may leave Detroit for his second contract never having started a game or thrown a meaningful pass.  Ridiculous.

The only good that can come of Stanton not playing (or the coaching staff thinking he's not capable of playing) is that they may trade him or perma-bench him and use their first round pick on a high-caliber, high-potential quarterback.  I know that there are a lot of fans that would hate to see another high first round pick used on a quarterback (thanks, Joey).  I understand that you have to build the lines first.  But at some point, to get over the hump as a franchise, you've got to get a franchise quarterback.  It's essential.  It's a passing league now and we need a Peyton Manning type guy to build this team around.  Yes, there arguably many other more urgent needs, but we have to find a GOOD starting quarterback.  Period.

I'm just having a really hard time seeing the sense in this team's direction right now.  With one hand they make a move to play a young guy and with the other hand, they supplant a young guy with a veteran.  It all makes no sense.  I think maybe Marinelli is going off his rocker a little.  Maybe all of the losing is affecting his brain and he is just losing it, because he is not thinking clearly here.  Maybe he has officially been Lionized.  What a sad day this is.  Bottom line is that he is really screwing up the personnel moves and in the end screwing us the fans... again.

When will it ever end...................

my 2 cents

I agree with just about everything you said concerning how Marinelli is handling this Culpepper trade. Perhaps Marinelli’s logic behind starting Culpepper is that he is a veteran guy, and you know how good ol’ rod feels about his veterans. HE STARTS THEM! Culpepper wont have to fight for this job, sure he might wait a week, but lets all recall one thing about Mr. Culpepper… where ever he goes he wants to start.

First off, I’m a fan of this signing. Dan-O has been playing exceptionally well, and hopefully he finds a good team around the league because i think he certainly has showed a lot of potential. Forget playing Stanton this season, you really should and so should everyone else. Culpepper has a lot to prove, and I am pretty content with stanton sitting behind Culpepper with a clip board learning and studying the game. Try to count the amount of times Stanton has actually practiced, he should really just sit, learn, and absorb. I’m sure considering their playing styles Stanton could learn quite a bit. Now let me lay on you what Daunte could possibly do for us now. I dont know, and quite frankly dont care, who Culpepper was throwing to in Miami or Oakland, but it wasnt Randy Moss and it wasnt Calvin Johnson. Culpepper is mobile, has a strong arm, i guess we’ll see.

Second, I think if the lions spent any draft pick on a Quarterback in the first 2 rounds, i would consider it a waste. Shut up. Shut up. The lions really have to pick up someone to pick up slack on that offensive line with the first pick. A better Offensive Line means better runs and more time to pass the ball, i think, i hope so. And with the other picks, Defense Defense Defense….. Defense? Oh yeah, and if we draft a quarterback or Crabtree in the first round I think it could be a sign of Matt Millen Pt. 2. Its time the lions start looking long term. Other NFL teams are looking fine without their “franchise quarterback”, Tennessee Titans is a good example of that. Your Franchise quarterback you want to be drafted will more than likely be sacked so many times he suffers from the similar shell shock of sorts Joey Harrington and Jon Kitna acquired in Detroit. IMO it would just be naive to believe in Stanton starting this season or that we should draft some over rated QB when we could find a gem in the third or fourth round or even free agency, its not unheard of.

Great Comments, BtotheLT

But I’ll have to disagree with you on a few. What happens if they don’t see Stanton at all this year and Culpepper plays the rest of the way and struggles like he did in Miami & Oakland? What do the Lions do now? They are left with a wash-out, an unknown and Dan-O just left town. At this point, how can you not draft a quarterback. You’ve got no one else to turn to. And my theory is, if you are going to get a QB in the draft, you might as well get the best one out there… just ask the Falcons about that. I completely agree that this team has holes everywhere… especially on the o-line and defense, but regardless, we still don’t have a good quarterback, which is imperative. I just think that they are putting way too many eggs in the Culpepper basket. If he succeeds, it could be one of the best moves in a long time. If he fails, it sets the team back another year. The free agent QB list is pathetic and it’s not as easy as you think to find a QB beyond the second round. That’s a crapshoot at best. They’ve got to hit a home run at QB at some point. Why not in a year that you have two first round picks, one being the first overall potentially. You’ve got several other high picks to go to defense and the o-line.

Thanks for the great debate!

FlipFlop

You make a great point saying the lions are bound to hit a home run with a quarterback and i cant deny that this draft seems to have a good QB class. However why spend another high draft pick on a quarterback considering they have a second-round untested QB on the bench? If Culpepper fails others will step up starting, I’m sure it will be a huge rotation just like the D-line.
The organization needs young talented players that can come in, start and make an impact. The lions really took advantage of jerry jones, and now the new GM will play with some of the best cards the lions have ever seen.

I'm just saying...

… that I want to win the Super Bowl. And to do that, I think we need a very good quarterback. Obviously, things don’t look good for Stanton and I don’t see Daunte taking us there. Maybe I’m wrong, but I just want to see this organization find someone great to stick with for the long haul and get us a Lombardi Trophy. Maybe that guy is at the top of the draft this year.

perhaps...

The plan is to build the o-line with free agency and draft picks. This way we have a QB(Culpepper) that can test the waters and stay afloat if things are rough since he’s a veteran, and if things stay calm enough(the o-line is worth a damn) put Stanton in and do not resign Culpepper, unless its with the understanding he is a backup to provide veteran leadership, and the paycheck empasizes this. If Stanton doesn’t perform within the 1-1 1/2 seasons chance, cut him, and draft a franchise qb or pick up a free agent (if there are any decent qbs available). And on top of this, build the defensive line with draft picks and free agency, that way the offense is on the field more, making plays, scoring points. Sure this is a two year plan, but thats assuming that Culpepper gives a mediocre performance and Stanton fails. This route we could set Culpepper up for success (lets not forget how many “has beens” have performed i.e. Kurt Warner, Doug Flutie, Kerry Collins, and on a limb, Gus Frerotte), ok that last example is a bad one. Or, if he doesn’t perform, then we still have Stanton for 1-2 years to see what we have. And worse case scenario, we draft a franchise qb ala Matt Ryan in 2011, or we could even sign Tom Brady or Matt Hasselbeck, but who knows where they will be after their injuries.

I doubt that the Lions have much of a plan...

but I’ll humor you a bit on this one, lions_sucker. The point is, if that is their plan, what happens if Daunte fails this year? Then they have nothing next year at all. It’s careless. If he fails, they’ll cut him (or not pick-up the ‘09 club option) this offseason. They’ve slighted Dan-0, so he won’t even want to resign – regardless, we’re not even sure if we would resign him because we haven’t seen enough yet. Either way, he walks. And then there’s poor Drew over there all alone in the corner of the locker room. No love going his way. He remains a lame duck QB. No one has the faintest idea what this kid can do. The Lions think they know, but they don’t have a clue. So what happens then? We’ve got one unproven QB on the roster and Kitna, who I’m sure they’ll trade or cut also. The free agent market is not going to yield anything. Maybe Kerry Collins if the Titans don’t resign him (I bet they do). He’s like a hundred anyway. The only other move is the draft and potentially wasting another pick before they’ve even played their last one. This whole thing hinges on Stanton and the Lions can’t see it. It’s beyond irresponsible for a company worth close to $1 Billion.

I guess we all have to hope that Culpepper is the next coming of Kurt Warner. A former MVP that somehow finds a piece of his former self with another team after getting hurt and slumping back into mediocrity. I, for one, am not too optimistic. I hope I’m wrong.

Anyway, thanks for the point of view!

Draft

I like what everyone is writing. I agree 100%. PLAY STANTON for now, at least see what you have. At this point, who cares if we go 1-15 or 2-14!!! Who cares??? not the fans. Anyway, if the Lions do draft a QB I hope its a 5th or 6th rounder, not a first rounder (Harrington, Ware, Long) because our track record is terrible there. The best QB we’ve had since the 90’s playoff years was Scott Mitchell, (besides the one Dave Krieg year and Erik Kramer was OK too) and he was aqcuired. I guess my point is I don’t mind drafting a QB, just not a high draft choice PLEASE!!!!!

Flacco & Ryan

Those two have changed my mind on high first round QBs. It’s just got to be the right guy. If he’s not there, don’t take him. The problem with Harrington and Ware at least, was that they were drafted too high. It’s just simply got to be the right player that’s ready to make an immediate impact, then start him from the beginning. Also, having two first rounders helps ease the burden because you can still get your lineman or defensive guy later in the round. I’m sticking to my guns on this one, guys. At some point we HAVE to get someone that does more than just MANAGE a game. In Detroit, all these washouts and used-up veterans MANAGE to do is lose!

QBs issues everywhere.

I like the fact Culpepper is starting Sunday. He can move the ball well. He has a cannon arm and he plays very well in Detroit (Silverdome). I dont know about you guys but what I see with Orlovski was Calvin Johnson was comming back to the ball or leaping to make catches. In Georgia Tech Calvin was hit on the run and he was unstopable. Culpepper has the arm and the experience to nail that long throw. We all preach that the ability to run will open up the pass…well now, our ability to pass can open up the run. And as far as grabbing that franchise QB like Manning. Few and far between. There is a reason QBs like Brad Johnson, Kurt Warner, Jon Kitna, Jeff Garcia, are still starting in the NFL. It’s not arm strength, it’s not acuracy or talent. It’s experience: reading defences in a split second, picking up blitzes and reading recievers. You might find that diamond in the rough like Ryan but not very often. We will have 3 of the first 33-35 picks in the draft and 9 over all and I would waste an early one on a QB. 2010 there is a slough of QBs that will be worth the high draft all from the big ten, but I dont think Tebow will be the answer in Detroit.

One thing on your experience comment...

The only reason that those quarterbacks you mentioned have experience is because they have a minimum amount of talent, arm strength and accuracy in this league to get enough playing time to earn experience. You think Warner showed that experience in his first few practices? Heck, no. How many times was he cut? It took game experience for him to become good. That’s what all the Stanton clammoring is about. How will we ever know what we have in him if he never sees any real action. Culpepper’s had his shot. He’s had a lot of experience and he’s going to most likely be an average starter. That analysis is taken from his last several years of playing time. And here’s the kicker… this is the worst team he has played with. Why would his play improve???

spot on,on dc

plus his signing and playing without “putting it on tape”,just means wf needs to CLEAN HOUSE!!!!
