Star-divide

Just like the Falcons did a year ago the lions will take a QB for the first pick and acquire a MLB and a LT for there 2nd and 3rd picks. Whatever new GM and HC come to detroit get to start their own regime with the QB of the offense and the QB of the defense in this draft. Bradford and Maualuga will be the face of the lions for years to come. Jamon Meredith has quick feet and good leadership to anchor the O-Line he will play left tackle allowing Backus to slide inside This pick could also be Jason Smith OT. The falcons turned their team around using the same tactics for there draft which was very similar having 2 1st and 2 3rd round picks. In the third round the lions get a dominate corner in Domonique Johnson he runs a 4.34 and is big. He is also a ball hawk. Vince Oghobaase will contribute to a young and soon to be talented d-line. He is built and plays just like Haynesworth. The reason I have Quarless in the 5th round is because of some off the field character issues, however if he can shape up his attitude then he could dominate the next level. And in the 6th round I think it is worth taking a look at Jamarko Simmons because of the success Gregg Jennings is having with Green Bay, Jamarko is putting up similar numbers at WMU and looks to be a very good posession WR. I dont think the redskins will try to resign Deangelo Hall so the lions will be sure to try and sign him.

You have only one pick labeled “1” even though we have two first round picks, and you have a pick labeled “4” even though we traded our 4th rounder away. Also, we should have two sixth-rounders.

I know it’s a hot debate right now to answer the question “should we or shouldn’t we take a QB?”, Personally I’d rather give Orlovsky/Stanton a real chance over a whole season. We already spent draft picks, training, roster spots, and development time on them, but what we haven’t given them yet is much of a starting opportunity over a meaningful number of games. It would be a waste to throw them out at this point before completely evaluating them in many real games. We don’t know whether either of them can be our QB until they have a good O-Line in front of them, but we do know that we need to fix our run defense and get bigger, and fix our O-Line too (obviously). We have a defense that gets pushed around & misses tackles like crazy.

I’d like to spend all our top picks on immediate impact players at (in this order, roughly):

1A – LT (Andre Smith)
1B – MLB: Maualuga or Laurinaitis, if available, otherwise NT (I like BJ Raji)
2 – NT (if we already have a MLB, otherwise a second-tier MLB)
3A – BPA Guard/Center
3B – BPA Center/Guard
5, etc – BPA. We have so many needs so we really can’t pick the wrong position, just get whoever “slides” the farthest. Or bank them for higher picks for next year, since we’re in a multi-year rebuilding process regardless.

I’m not a fan of bringing DeAngelo Hall and his attitude to Detroit, unless he comes with a low price tag.

Get on the QB bandwagon, n4ry4!

I’m not sure that I would feel very confident going into next season with Stanton and Orlovsky as our quarterbacks. Stanton may still prove to be a keeper, but he’ll need to compete for it. The problem with Dan-O is that we’d have to resign him. He can get a 2 or 3 year contract as a back-up elsewhere, so we’ll have to match that. If it’s as a back-up, heck, bring him back. But as a starter, I think that he’s only capable of average at best. Now is the time to start over and try to find a true stud in the draft. We might miss, but it’s time to take that chance again.

As for the OT being the overall pick… I just don’t think that they’ll do that. Backus, because of contractual reasons, will be here next year and we just used a first round pick on Cherilus. That doesn’t mean we’re set because, obviously… look at our OL play. But they’ll take that into consideration. I’m all for moving one of them to guard, but will they really do that? I don’t know. I know we need to upgrade this line, but they might choose to start with the guards this year and when Backus’ contract is easier to swallow, cut him and replace him through the draft.

Agree with you on D-Hall.

oops

I was just labeling the picks from 1-7 I wasn’t putting the rounds that they are in. I see where you come from with Deangelo Hall and we probably wont sign him, but he would be an upgrade to what we currently have. I wasn’t considering Dan-O because the new coach and GM most likely aren’t going to match whatever offer he gets from another team. I know there is a lot of smack talk against Stanton however what do we have to lose by just letting him start a game perhaps maybe this Sunday. Depending on how he would do I would consider drafting o-line for the first pick. Nobody will ever know how good or bad Stanton really is until he gets a true chance. The things he has done on the field so far have been good so lets see what he can do in a whole game. I would love to see Stanton be the future of the lions, however he needs to be given an opportunity. As of now I see a new coach Drafting his own signal caller for the future.

First off...

… love your handle “hate2lovelions”! Isn’t it the truth? I’ve always maintained that the draft boards change so much between February and April, that it’s almost pointless to try and come up with a mock, but it’s fun, isn’t it? I can tell you’ve put some thought into it too. I like the idea of a QB first overall, but not sure that I agree that Brandon is better than Stafford. There’s also some people (not me) that think Tim Tebow might creep up into the battle of the best QB if he declares. I’m not sure if Maualuga or Laurinaitis will be there when we take our second first rounder, but LB or DE would be my first choice in that spot. Beyond the late first or early second round it’s too much of a crapshoot. I won’t even try to guess.

The other comment I’ll make is on DeAngelo Hall. Not a fan of the prima-dona corners or receivers. He hasn’t even been playing well aside from the personality issues. Did you see him get beat in the Giants game two weeks ago? That’s the reason Oakland let him go. I’d rather see the Lions play a rook.

Good post.

We should focus on the lines

I know we agree that we need a QB, but without a good oline, no QB will be save. Our lions gave the most in sack this with 49, now do we want to put a QB in an unsteady line, what we need is a Oline who can protect the blind side of the QB if we a get Right handed QB. Now we know there are few player out there on the draft is most promising stars like Andre Smith of BAMA, or Eugene Monroe of Virginia. Then on our 2nd 1st rounder we should look at QB or Dline, our defensive line are last in yard allow and points. This mean we need to look at Def. Line helps, player like Aaron Maybin of Penn ST or Gerald McCoy of Oklahoma and Brian Orakpo of Texas should be out if we pick in the late 1st round, so it we were going to pick we can look at Tyson Jackson of LSU or Michael Johnson of Georgia Tech. If i were picking I would pick Andre Smith, then I will pick Micheal Johnson. Remember there are few good quarterback in the last of the draft ok. And this way we can save some money in long run.

I like your thinkin!!!

However our biggest defensive need is at MLB then corner. When Avril and Dwayne white are playing together at end, the QB is on the ground alot. These guys create a lot of havoc back there. Peyton Manning was on the ground alot today. Dan-O played pretty good taoday so I think I would go LT for the 1st pick too.
