2009 NFL Draft Order
Below is the current order for the first-round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The last 16 picks are subject to change, as the final order depends on which two teams make it to the Super Bowl. For the Lions, their two first-round picks will be #1 and #20 as long as the Chargers don't make it to the Super Bowl. Should that happen, the Lions would pick 19th instead of 20th.

Trade for a QB
Take DE Brian Orakpo with the first pick and LB James Laurinaitis with the 19/20 pick.

Orapko
He is a great player, but not a #1 overall pick. Trade down with Cleveland, take their pick and their second rounder. Get Jenkins at 5, and Oher/Baylor o-lineman at 20. Take two D-linemen in the second round.
Getting a QB is the worst possibility unless they are planning on making a playoff push next year. Take a QB in a later round, and use Orvlosky as a stopgap for the next year, as the rebuilding goes on. There are much more pressing needs (secondary)

I agree...
They need to shore up the Line on both sides. Who is Jenkins?

Malcom Jenkins
Corner from Ohio State. He’s the top ranked corner on Kiper and McShay’s boards. Got great cover skills, and is pretty fast seeing as he’s coming out of the Big Ten.

Orapko would be a good #1.
Oher will go in the top 5. LB Laurantitis would be a good take at #20.

I'm not sold on Laurantitis
I’ll have to see at the combine, but I’m not sure he has top level speed for a linebacker. Seems like he’d be more of a project than someone who could star right away. Although at 20, you might be able to afford that sort of gamble.
I like Malalugia more, but he definitely won’t be around at 20, and he’s not worth taking Top 5.

What in the world
makes you think the Browns are going to give up #5 in the first and second rounds to move up to number 1? That’s not going to happen. The browns are looking at Jenkins, Maualuga or Aaron Curry from Wake Forrest atleast two of whom will be there at #5. Clay Matthews in the seond. There isn’t a player in this draft the browns need at number one meaning Stafford Orakpo, or Bradford(if he enters), Crabtree or Andre Smith from Alabama. The lions need to pretend like Crabtree doesn’t exsist, take the end Orakpo. Take whomever is left between Laurinaitis, Maualuga, or Aaron Curry or better yet Beanie Wells if he falls that far at #20. Offensive lineman or linebacker in the second and third. If the Lions are smart they will take Tebow (if he enters) in the fourth round. Wether he become an NFL level QB or not is a question. He will no doubt make for an excellent half back / receiver / special teams / all around monster. With his size and willingness to hit I could easily see him making the switch to saftey or even linebacker in the NFL. At any rate he is a sure bet to be atleast productive with the possibility of scoring a future QB who can be productive in the mean time. If you watched the title game you know the he can throw the football.

Try to trade down
You take care of the O-Line with the first pick, but do whatever you can to trade out of it. If you can’t, get Smith from Alabama. A QB is no good on his back. Move Back On His Ass (Backus) to guard. I hope with Cherilus adding a year to his exp. will help the right side.
I would like to add a playmaker on defense with the 2nd first rounder. Anyone on the D-Line or LB, I will be happy.
Plus, I would stay away from trying to sign Cassell. Only 2 of their wins came from teams with winning records and this guy was blessed with surrounding talent with the exception at RB due to injuries. I think he’s fool’s gold. Can you say Scott MItchell? He just played himslef to a fat contract but will he produce. I don’t want him.
Does anyone know how many picks we have? All of the mock drafts have us with 2 3rd rounders. We actually have 3 with the Rogers trade to Cleveland for Bodden and a 3rd rounder. We may get a 4th 3rd eounder if we get compensated from the Damien WOody signing to the Jets.
2-1st Round
1-2nd round
3 or maybe 4-3rd round
1-4th round
2-5th round
1-6th round
10 or possibly 11 picks in the draft ain’t too shabby.

OL/DL
Orakpo looks like a stud, but i’d still like an O linemen with the first (either smith, oher, monroe in that order). maybe trade down and hope one is still on the board.

Defense needs much more help than the offense
At least the Lions could score a bit this season. The D just couldn’t keep the other team from doing so more. No rush defense to speak of and little to none in the passing game. That would be my first concern. maybe make some trades or pick-ups before the draft. See what happens.

fair enough.
then trade for a defensive player as well. might as well retool the whole defensive machine.

I wish we could trade down to stockpile more picks (God knows we need them). That way we don’t get stuck with as big of a contract. Plus, we can still get an OL or DL.

Trading that first pick would be great
but I don’t know if anyone would want to. Someone who needs a QB maybe but that first pick has a huge contract and teams might steer clear for that reason alone. i’d do it in a heartbeat if it netted us more/better choices.

Yeah, that's the problem
I don’t think anyone would trade for it.

If you can't trade it...
Just do what what Miami did. Offer a pile of money to two guys and tell them the first to accept it will be the No. 1 pick. I would definitely say go with O-Line (Oher or Smith, in that order of prefernece).
Nothing can replace it and we need to build around Smith, CJ, and whoever our future QB is (please God if you are kind and Merciful let Cassell fall into our laps.) Then we can move Cherilus to OG, Backus to RT and then we have a new LT.
Then go with MLB, DL, or CB/S with the 20th pick. Or even trade down with the No. 20 and pick up another 3rd or 2nd rounder. We have found some talent there recently (Fluellen, Avril, S. Rogers*, A. Goodman*) on defense in the past. We could even use another reciever in the 3rd round to take some pressure off of CJ.
*I know they are no longer with us.
by TonyDC on Dec 29, 2008 3:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Why would they? There is not
what I would consider a “stud” player at the top of this draft. taking a QB 1st is problematic at best. Look how previous 1st pick QB’s fare in this league.
There’s a lot more that needs to be done in Detroit than just the draft. I rambled through my thoughts in this fanpost, though it was, in truth, mostly me pissed and rambling. I’m still mad at Millen, the friggin’ idiot, and WCF. They got us to this point. Someone new needs to take us from here on out. I’ve seen the pro’s and con’s of Mayhew. He may be a great GM in the NFL but I wish it was somewhere else but Detroit.

But in all seriousness, that sucks for Alabama.

Matt Cassel?
I would love to see cassel go to the lions but bill belichick isnt that bumb to use up that type of cap room on one unproven player. The pats have to sign an trade him to keep him away from the jets. But i still could see the pats holding on to him because of Brady’s injury.

the lions are now on the clock!
if we dont sign Matt Cassel, then Sam Bradford please
everything Rays,Marlins,Twins and Reds
who needs k-rod for 37 million when you can have d-rod for 50k?
twins sign ty wigginton ASAP!!!!

the pats wont allow Cassel to be come a free Agent
The pats are not gona let him walk they will franchise him before they let him walk. This is bill belichick he is to smart to let an asset like Cassel go to be a FA. Qb’s are hard to come buy I dont have to tell you guy’s that. Look at what bill got for Bledsoe you cat tell me theirs no premium for a good QB’s.

Do you have any idea ...
how much money it would cost for them to sign him to a franschise tender offer? They could risk having $28 million locked up on just two QB’s. I am not saying they will let him walk, they are just taking a huge risk in signing him to a tender and getting stuck with him if no one ponies up to trade.
by TonyDC on Dec 29, 2008 7:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
if they get stuck with him Brady's injury is worst than they say
Scott Pioli, Josh McDaniels, Romeo Crennel and Cassel would be nice fit for the lions. Could the lions be the next dolphin’s. It take’s money to win will the owner of the lion’s pony up to the bar or is he drunk with losing. This makes sense to a losing team to me.

Projected #1
What the F***! They cant be even entertaining the idea of wasting it on Sam Bradford. Let them ruin another great player. O-Line, O-Line…. That what is needed. Trade down, get smith then get your QB in round 2 or 3. Come on I dont want another 0-16

Mock Draft
No way will we take Sam Bradford first. Buy Experience there. O-line,O-line. Start with Smith. Take a DB who cuts the field in half, like Jenkins, he will still b there. D it up in rounds 3 and 4
by proud to bleed light blue on Jan 1, 2009 10:24 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Just the D
I’m really tired of the Lions salt and peppering the team with a little improvement here and there. I think they should commit to one side of the ball this season. The Defense, particularly the line. There was no push at all this season. I know we have a lot of need on the O line. But we are different than every other team. We cant afford to try to do anything else but address the D line. One thing at a time we’re not good enough at scouting to try to do too much! I don’t think they can screw up too bad (hoping) if they just try to get one hole truly fixed in that leaking ship we call The Detroit Lions.

here we go
Now that pats tag Cassel, they want picks. Give them our 20 th. draft on OT. then work the D. Or just try to draft. and we know how that works here!
