Give Mayhew a Chance!!

Polian: Martin Mayhew one of the top young GM prospects

Bill Polian, who knows a few things about constructing a winning NFL franchise, told FoxSports columnist Jason Whitlock that Martin Mayhew is one of the top up-and-coming general manager prospects.

September 25, FoxSports.com: Last week I was at the same college football game as the best general manager in professional football, Indy's Bill Polian. At halftime of the Kansas State-Louisville game, I picked Polian's brain about young GM prospects. To my great surprise he was extremely high on Mayhew, who was just promoted to assistant GM in Detroit.

Polian is convinced that Mayhew has a deep understanding of personnel and a tremendous work ethic. Mayhew was one of only four guys Polian identified as a future GM.

If you don't know, Polian built the Buffalo Bills Super Bowl teams, the Carolina Panthers team that advanced to the Super Bowl and, of course, the Indianapolis Colts squad that won it all. He knows what it takes to build a winner.

Mayhew might be worth hanging onto for a year or two.

Star-divide

The only thing keeping people from accepting Mayhew is the fact that he worked under Millen. This doesnt mean that he will be bad if anything now he knows what not to do as a GM. People have said that he has already done more in half a season as Millen did the whole time he was in Detroit. It may take a couple of years but I believe Mayhew has the work ethic and the ablility to turn the lions around. Plus he can already start thinking about Head Coaches while other teams that have fired their GMs have to wait to hire a GM. Im pretty excited to hear his press conference and happy that the lions gave him a chance especially after the Brilliant Roy Williams trade. I mean we got so much for Roy when he was more than likely gonna leave for nothing at the end of the season. REally the trade was the best thing Detroit did in a long time. I say just give him a chance..

Here's my problem

With Mayhew we’re banking on his potential to be a good GM. There are others out there (Pioli, for example) that have already proven themselves.

take my chances

I’d rather take my chances with a PROVEN GM, as Sean alludes to than “potentially” good GM. Although, it now seems we Lions fans don’t have a choice. I still have to guess that the open-ended “Personnel Position” that WDF spoke about can be anything in the world, leaving the door open to the likes of Pioli and Parcells. Let’s hope so……….

Well think of it this way

He can’t be worse than Millen. 0-16 is pretty much rock bottom.

He doesn't get a chance

I’m sorry, I don’t care what Polian says. This guy was an integral part of the front office that built 0-16, he needs to go. Interview Pioli or try and get Parcells or do something to send a message to the city that you are at least trying. Interview someone for fucks sake, put on the show and fake some actual due diligence.

Martin Mayhew has only ever been a major part of 2 football operations, the XFL, and the Millen-era Lions. Let Polian hire him if he’s so damn smart, this team doesn’t need any more god damn potential, it needs results. Pioli has had results, hell his protege has results, he turned around the falcons! Parcells has as much in the results portion of his resume as anyone in the league.

The blueprint is clear this year for turning a team around, 2 bottom of the barrel teams are in the playoffs this year. One of them was only 1 win better than the lions! The worst part about it is, the man who turned them around might be available for hire if the Lions had waited. It couldn’t be a more obvious hire, Parcells took a 1-15 team and made them 11-5 AFC East champs!

Just an additional quote

“I felt the same way about Herman [ Edwards ], Herman wasn’t a coordinator… He was a leader of men. Rod is a leader, he’s a coach’s coach, he’s one of the best communicators I’ve ever been around, he’ s a motivator and he is a great teacher”

That is Colts HC Tony Dungy on Rod Marinelli, at the time of his hiring as head coach of the Detroit Lions. Compliments from coaches and GM’s like that in the NFL are total bullshit. Measure a candidate by his success, of which Mayhew and Lewan have had none.

Mayhew

As a Lions fan I feel like I have been living by the mantra of “well, if they prove me wrong then I will be happy it worked out” for too long. Mayhew maybe a nice guy and since he has the job I have no choice but to hope that it does work out. But to give the job to someone who had a hand in putting this team together without even doing a candidate search is like a punch in the stomach. There are more qualified candidates out there and people who would bring new ideas to this franchise. This move stinks of pure lazyness. While it is nice to have a GM already in place while we search for a head coach I still think it would have been worth our time to interview candidates before giving Mayhew the job. It’s not like other teams would be knocking on his door anyway.

If your boss was bad and you could do better, should you not recieve a chance to replace him because you worked for him?

Millen was the problem, not Meyhew. Would Millen have gotten as much for Roy Williams as Meyhew? I doubt it. They probably would have kept him to only lose him to free agency or paid him more than he was worth to stay. He also has gained a lot of experience in what not to do. He obviously has a plan that is different from what we saw with Millen . In my eyes the Roy Williams trade was a good start for him. His next test will be who he puts at head coach and then the draft and free agency. He had no control over what he inherited. I say give him a chance before you write him off. I know I’ve worked for a few people I could have done a better job than. I have faith the same is true here.

It doesn't matter

It Doesn’t matter who Detroit brought in or who the new HC, Off. Cood. or Def. Coord. will be. We won’t be happy with the decision. Because of what we went through as fans and being the laughing stock of the NFL, our thoughts of who will be in line next is predictable and understandable in terms of our feelings. We have Lewand and Mayhew in place. We just have to have faith that they will get the job done. Did you read Killer Kowalski’s story about the press conference? Go to www.mlive.com to check it out. The overhaul is not done yet. There will be a lot of new faces on this team next year. When I mean a lot, I mean about 20 new players on this squad, if not, more. Obviously we can’t get rid of 40 players, which I would like to see, but you will only see about 10-12 familiar face on this team from the 2008 squad. I guarantee it.
