Now that this pesky season is over, lets talk '09
I am seriously digging the idea of Steve Spagnuolo possibly being interested and ultimately taking the head coaching job. I think he would do wonders for the team morale and also get that defense to play better ( hopefully with some new players ). The offense is a different story, i actually like the direction this offense is headed. The O line needs serious upgrades and the TE position should definitely be addressed in the draft. Kevin Smith did a pretty good job and Calvin...... well that gets me to my question .
Anyway, here it is:

I voted for free agents
Only because Daunte sucks and none of the QBs seem all that appealing in the draft.

Free Agent or trade
Culpepper sucks and Orlovsky is not the solution. I’m not sure Stanton is either but I’d keep him on the bench for a few more years anyways. Quinn, Brohm, Cassel? Three interesting options.

Quinn
Is Quinn a free agent ?
that is intriguing.
I would love Cassel, but i believe i read that Brady is having Major setbacks in his rehab and he may be out for the whole 09 season. The pats wont let Cassel go easily.
just our luck, the Lions have the #1 pick and every QB available is sub par
Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

I could if he played well.

I guess I could put my feelings aside if that happened
Hell, I rooted for Drew Stanton this season. Anything is possible.

TE/QB
just a thought, but owen daniels is an UFA this offseason. He’s a stud for the texans. but i don’t really see any free agents looking to play in detroit after this season.
the QB situation is a mess. i’m hoping we don’t take a QB with the first pick, I’d rather take Smith. The man is an absolute beast. if we do take a draft, hoepfully our new front office can find a gem late in the draft.
so if we don’t draft, then who’s our QB. I don’t think Cassel is leaving the Pats unless Brady pulls out a miracle and heals, so they may throw some money at him to stay. Im not a big fan of the rest of the QBs available. Quinn isnt a free agent as far as I can find and I dont think the Packers will part with Brohm, him being their main backup. That leaves us with free agents like warner, grossman, batch, boller, garcia, collins, lossman, or patrick ramsey. other than warner, i don’t think any are a big upgrade from our current staff. an interesting note though, if the cards give warner a contract ext then leinart says he wants out. its all a little murky.
i think Dan O would be the best to bridge the gap for a few years, until it becomes clearer, but he’s a UFA and I don’t know if he’ll stay in Detroit. I’d put my money on him for a short time, if he stays.

OH MY GOD !!!
Living in Chicago, I just realized that Rex Grossman is a free agent, i could almost bet you that the Lions pick him up to compete for the job.

I didn’t think that Dan O was horrible. I actually think he proved that he belongs somewhere. Maybe in Detroit while they rebuild….again. He’s got the rapport with the people and besides the safety lapse had played pretty well I thought.

matt cassel? i think theres a chance
i mainly think that the pats can’t afford two high dollar QB’s unless they slap a franchise tag on cassel and i’m not sure they want to do that. i think we can pursue alot of really good free agents based on the fact that their stock will go up unless we go an amazing 0-16 again cause all the talk on sportscenter will be based on the work they are doing turn the lions around. so basically they’ll get alot of press for just being there if we go 8-8 those free agent signings will get alot of the credit whether they deserve it or not which will make them seem like more valuable assets to the rest of the league. if your one of the best players on a bad team you really stand out just ask Roy and Jerry “regretting it now” Jones

Theres no keep as is option
Keep it as is. Build the team around the QB, rather than the other way around

my scenario for success
As for 09, promoting Mayhew and Lewand is not the answer. Mayhew should be kept on as assistant GM and Lewand for his cap proficiency…but only if under a new regime. Here’s my take on what needs to happen for the Lions to compete sooner, rather than later.
First, hire Scott Pioli as president and GM…no matter the cost. He then brings Cassel along with him. QB situation solved. As for the draft, trade the #1 pick to Philly for their two 1st rounders. As it stands today, we’d be sitting at #s 20, 22, 28 and 33 (2nd round). With these picks I go after OG Duke Robinson from Oklahoma at #20, the best available left tackle on the board at 22 (in this draft there will still be great quality here), and the best available MLB, DE, or DB at 28 and 33. With the 2 new linemen, that frees up Backus to be moved to guard where he might actually finally do SOMETHING for the team. I’d also consider drafting Curtis Painter from Purdue in a later round. He, at one time, was rated as one of the top QB prospects coming into this past season and could be a gem down the road.

Here's what I would do...
I’m so glad that Marinelli, Cullen, Lake, Millen, and Colletto(moved to offensive line coach) is gone. I think Mayhew can do a good job. Lewand I’m not too sure about. I hear Josh McDaniels is a possibility from the Pats as OC or Head Coach. Schwartz as DC from the Titans. Hell, even bring back Martz as OC at least we could move the ball then. Fire Kwan from ST coach. Get Spagnuolo in here from the Giants. Those are just some of the office changes. I think that Chase Daniel and Graham Harrell are good pick ups in the draft. Obviously we need to work on the OL. The secondary and our linebacking corps need work. I would go though the roster changes but that could be a bit much right now. Us as Lions fans should really be heard in the front office. We know what we want and what could possibly be done to win. Go Lions ’09

who voted Culpepper?
"I decided to become a basketball fan this year and it’s not working out so well because the Wizards SUUUCK. So then I shifted to hockey. That’s pretty fun except there are a lot of flashing lights and horns and shit at the game."

Please hire Spags!!
Living in NYC and getting Giants news stuffed down my throat during the year I can tell you this – the Giants players LOVE playing for Spagnoulo. He is well respected and players play for him. He also knows how to get the best out of his players and can evaluate DEFENSIVE talent – which we desperately need. I would actually consider coming to Detroit next year for a few games IF they hire Spags.

I voted 4 Daunte
I say keep him…dnt take a QB in the draft…i know he looked like shit but i think he was rusty…use them draft picks for positions we REALLY need…

re:Please hire Spags!!
I agree 100%, but i also am a big fan of Leslie Frazier. I know this sounds silly but I am extremely optimistic about these coaching prospects. Those two number 1’s that we have potentially can change the face, and direction of this franchise. I’m so excited ( or stupid ) that i just requested season ticket info for next year. The cycle repeats itself

TRADE TRADE TRADE!!
I agree with alot of what is being said. The Lions need to look at what Parcells did in Miami. He started by getting rid of the useless talent big names on the team. Namely Jason taylor old and wanted to dance. He drafted a huge offensive lineman. now he has a guy in place at left tackle for a solid 6 to 8 years. He got a huge Veteran QB in pennigton and the Coach actually put an offense in that was built to suit the players he had. Here I thought only high school coaches did that.
Lets trade one of our 2 first round draft picks away for some much needed depth.(thanks Dallas) Give Philly the first pick of the draft take Mcnabb and their 2nd and 4th pick. Gives us a Vet Qb and a hell of an athlete plus extra picks to build depth at well everywhere. What about Stanton are we even gonna give him a chance to play.. and I mean a fair chance . LOL
by Lionbcker on Dec 30, 2008 5:20 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I could handle McNabb for a few years
but he gets hurt a lot. No way we get all that for the first pick though. We’ll have problems giving it away. No one wants the big ass contract that’s going to come with it.

First fix O line/blocking
I’d trade Daunte AND the #1 pick to Minnesota for HUTCH, and try to pluck Mo Williams from J’Ville in trade, reuniting them with Backus. Undeniably awesome individual players with chemistry, history, and hunger between them. I’d woo Lorenzo Neal with whatever he wanted, and spend the rest of my pennies on defense after that.
Excluding Hutch, these aren’t bank-breaking moves, and would curb most of our headaches on offense. I’d like to see Jeremy Shockey rejuvenate himself here too.

I'd have to say no th Shockey.
he’s a big injury risk and an ass to boot.

No shockey
No the Lions do not need a headache like shockey. He has to much tude and a sidetracked personality is not gonna help a team recover form 0-16. There are some very good TE’s around the league Even Gonzalez wants out of KC. The thing that is overated about TE’s is their abilty to run. Who cares as long as the guy can block and catch the darn ball when it is thrown to him. Shoot how many times does that ball hit TO right in the hands and he looks at ROMO LOL .
