Tuesday Notes: Lions Want to Talk with Josh McDaniels

  • According to the Boston Herald, the Lions have requested to talk with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.  I wish McDaniels would bring Scott Pioli with him if he ends up getting hired, but that won't be happening if his destination is Detroit.  Even so, you would think it is likely that McDaniels would bring in Matt Cassel to be his starting QB, which would be great news for the Lions.  I'm not all that high on Cassel if he isn't in McDaniels' system, but the two combined would be a great package deal.
  • Tom Kowalski doesn't think Brian Billick will be hired by the Lions.
  • Lions cornerback Leigh Bodden was very upset with the coaches this past season and had nothing but bad things to say about them on Monday.
  • I agree with Dave Birkett 100%; it's time that William Clay Ford gives us all some answers by making himself available to the media.  Simply sitting back and saying nothing is a pretty cowardly thing to do.  I couldn't care less about how bad things went this past season; it's time that he either tells us what the reasoning was behind the promotions of Mayhew and Lewand or simply moves on for good and let's Bill Ford Jr. have control of the team.
  • Not that this will be a concern for Lions players, but the 2010 Pro Bowl reportedly will be played the week before the Super Bowl at Dolphin Stadium in Miami (the location of next year's Super Bowl).

I'd definitely take McDaniels (w/Cassel)

Why would you want tho have the pro bowl the week before the Super Bowl? Now you don’t get the best players in the Pro-Bowl (from AFC/NFC Champs) and it just becomes a meaningless game used for advertisement to make more money for the NFL. I rarely watched the Pro-Bowl anyways and now know I won’t watch it. Lame.

Ford is too senile to speak coherently to the press without totally screwing up and making the Lions look worse than they already are.

Don’t want Billick.

Agreed...

..he could be a great transition coach for the franchise, someone that could restore credibility, order, and accountability by demanding respect from the players.

The only problem is I think he may want to run the show and may have a hard time taking orders from two guys younger than he is.

I'd like a Defensive coach

Spags/Frazier/Schwartz….we almost set a record for points given up in a season. we need a major overhaul because the tampa 2 bombed.

McDaniels

It’s impossible to tell just how good that guy is because of Belicheck. I know he’s thought of highly around the league, but that is 100% Bill’s team, and McDaniels isn’t putting the players on the field, either. He’s done a good job grooming Cassell, but . . . unless we can bring Cassell with him, I hope he’s not the hire.

I feel the same way

I’d be fine with McDaniels if he brings Cassel with him, since that solves a huge need. But I’m not all that enthused with McDaniels by himself, especially with the poor track record NE assistants have.
