Pride of Detroit FFL Discussion Thread
The 2008 Pride of Detroit Fantasy Football League now has 12 members and is ready to go. The 12 teams have been separated into three unnamed (as of right now) divisions, and the draft order has been randomly set. Take a look below for the full draft order (screen name on Pride of Detroit is in parentheses).
- SnotKnocker's (Ace Banger,The Guru)
- Underdogs (Sig Saur)
- Rudys Warhawks (?)
- Just go away Favre (ahtrap)
- Calvin and the Chipmunks (mgersz)
- Detroit's Few Good Men (ReichardZ)
- West Coast Lions (LVLionfan)
- LA Leos (sgdbw90)
- Maize 'n' Blue Jays (THE_J)
- Better Than Millen (Sean Yuille)
- Motown Madmen (Jettero2112)
- The Gosder Cherilus Posse (The Prodigy)
For those of you that are in this league, there are some decisions that have to be made regarding it. Probably the most important decision is when to have the draft, so basically I'm opening up the floor to you guys as far as the date/time goes. Right now it is set for 7:00 p.m. ET on August 21, but that is in no way set in stone.
With that in mind, let me know what time of the day is best for you, and if there is a certain day where you know you won't be available, tell me. That way we can set a draft time where hopefully nearly everyone can make it.
Beyond the draft, some other decisions that need to be made include what starting rosters will look like, how points will be awarded (scoring options), whether or not there will be a trade deadline, and how long the playoffs should last. To see what the roster requirements currently are and what the scoring options look like, go to the league page and click on scoring rules and league rules.
Below are some specific questions I'd like each of you to answer (in the comments section of this post) in order to get an idea of what changes, if any, need to be made before this league officially gets started.
- When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
- Are there any days where you know you couldn't make it to the draft?
- After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
- Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
- Should there be decimal point scoring?
- Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
- Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
- Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
- Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
Thanks in advance for answering the above questions and here's to getting this league rolling full speed ahead!
(By the way, I'll be posting info on the overflow league shortly, so if you're not in the official league, you still will be able to play fantasy football with other readers of Pride of Detroit.)

Here are my answers to those questions...
Just so you guys can get my opinion on things.
When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
Any time works for me.
Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
Anything after the 27th is up in the air for me.
After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
I would say that 1 more RB should be added to the starting lineup, but it doesn’t matter a whole lot to me since there is a RB/WR option.
Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
I would rather have a TD pass be worth 6 points rather than only 4 to keep all TDs worth the same amount of points. Also, I think sacks should only be worth 1 point as they should not be equal to interceptions. Similarly, I don’t think a defense should get any points for a forced fumble but should get 2 for recovering a fumble. Also, on offense I don’t think fumbles should get you negative points, but lost fumbles get you -2.
Should there be decimal point scoring?
I’m not a huge fan of decimal point scoring, but can see its advantages. If I had to answer this I would say “no.”
Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
I would say yes, but the points would not be very big. Certain thresholds should get you extra points, but I don’t want to go nuts with this feature.
Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
Yes, we should have one, and somewhere toward the middle to the end of the season.
Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
Although a week 17 championship could get complicated if star players aren’t playing, I’d rather allow 6 teams to be in the playoffs.
Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
Nothing specific, but something to do with past Lions players or something like that.

Answers from the Underdogs
When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
- Any time of the day works for me.
Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
- 22nd, 23rd, and 24th
After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
- I think the RB/WR/TE slot works to alleviate bye week problems so I’m all for it.
Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
- No
Should there be decimal point scoring?
- No
Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
- I agree with the Passing TD’s worth 6 pts. everything else looks good.
Do we need to have a trading deadline?
- Yes, week 6
Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
- Since most teams with a play off slot start sitting their starters about the time of FF
play offs and reeking havoc on FF rosters, I’m for the two week play off.
Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
- Named after famous Lions works for me.

Just go away Favre chiming in
Reserve the right to change that name, as Favre has gone away, from Wisconsin at least…
When is a good time of the day to have the draft? Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
Already have two drafts on the 19th so I’d vote against that day…otherwise….nothing really in stone…..
After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
Personally like the flex option, as it allows for a little more match-up based tweaking, so I’d say leave it as is.
Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
I’d suggest
1. Make passing TDs worth 6 points
2. Add negatives for missed kicks. -3 for missed PAT, -1 for any FGs missed inside of
40 yards?
3. Sacks shouldn’t be weighted as much as turnovers. Maybe drop that down to a single
point?
4. Maybe a defensive point gradient, like 0-6 points against is 7, 7-13 is +4, 14-20 is +1, 21-27 is -1, 28-34 is -3, and 35 is -5?
All just suggestions, it’s your league Sean, and we’re just playing in it, so….just let us know for sure a couple of days early so we can plan to draft accordingly.
Should there be decimal point scoring?
Yes!!! Every yard should matter!!!
Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
Sure, why not….never seen the extra point for, say, a 42 yard TD pass, but I like the idea…
Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
Like the three week playoffs, it lets more teams in on the fun, but it also runs the risk of the best players getting shut down for playoffs….like last year, when LaDainian Tomlinson got taken out early in the third quarter of their last game against Denver, and may or may not have cost me a championship….and this was playing against my fiancee, no less! I’m gonna have to hear about that one the rest of my freakin’ life!!!
Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
1) Black and Blue
2) Fire Millen
3) Charlie Weis…..HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
4) Football Championship Subdivision
5) The Calvin Johnson Experience
6) Kitna’s Korner
7) The CFL/XFL/WLAF/USFL, etc…
8) Named after school houses from the harry potter series
9)

LA Leos here
- When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
If it’s a weekday, it should be after 7. Weekends I don’t really care.
- Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
Not that I know of.
- After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
The rosters look fine to me.
- Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
I really like PPR leagues (points per reception). Maybe add something like .5 or .25 points per reception. It makes picking your WR’s and RB’s much more interesting, especially off the waiver wire.
- Should there be decimal point scoring?
Absolutely yes! Every yard counts.
- Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
I think no. I don’t like how arbitrary scoring can be sometimes. Plus, I’ve had too many receivers get 149 yards, just missing the cutoff which is stupid.
- Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
No preference.
- Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
Week 16 should be the championship.
- Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
I think it would be cool to name them after Lions legends from the 50s. Maybe a Layne Division, Karras Division, and Schmidt Division.

My $0.02
1. When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
I would prefer to do it later in the evening (8p or later) than earlier as I run kids all over creation every night of the week.
2. Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
I’m not too picky. 8/21 at 7p works for me. That’s my off night. Weekends are out as I am never home and Wednesdays are kind of tough.
3. After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
Looks good to me.
4. Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
Minor changes I would recommend:
2 pts for safety, not 4.
-3 for missed field goal and -1 for missed xp.
5. Should there be decimal point scoring?
yes
6. Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
Yes
7. Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
Yes. Before the first game in week 9.
8. Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
League should finish in week 15 or 16 so as not to have players on good teams benched and screwing up teams.
9. Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
How about:
Doak Walker Division
Bobby Layne Division
Yale Lary Division

Meant to say
on #8 that playoffs should end week 15 or 16.

ReichardZ's thoughts
When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
I feel weekends are better, but I’ve already marked down the current date, so that’s fine.
Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
The 23 in the morning.
After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
I like two running backs plus a flex posistion, so one more RB and keep the RB/WR
Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
Nope.
Should there be decimal point scoring?
I think it would be too complicated.
Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
I like that.
Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
No trading in the playoffs. If you want a deadline, it should be two weeks before the playoffs start.
Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
Week 16.
Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
How about the Harrington, Rodgers and Williams divisions, or is it too soon.

Last question
Rogers…sorry, thinking of Aaron.

Is it possible for everyone to go winless?
I fear that may happen to teams in a division named after any of those players.

Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft? no
After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.) doesn’t matter
Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options? no
Should there be decimal point scoring? i’ve used it before, it just makes things more confusing
Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained? sure
Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it? week 10
Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)? week 17 is awful for fantasy
Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be? name them after the three greatest lions: Barry Sanders, Billy Sims, and Joey Harrington

I really disagree with some of you guys
It’s not like we personally need to add up the decimal points to tally our total score, so how is it more complicated? I’ve played with leagues that do have decimal systems and leagues that don’t, and the ones that don’t have always been tainted my totals that round up and round down. The computer figures it out for us, why shouldn’t every player get credit for every yard they accrue? There’s no practical reason not to use decimal points.
by sgdbw90 on Aug 15, 2008 10:45 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
We don’t have to add it up manually like we did when i first started playing (live draft in a local pub out of a book and everyone figuring out stats on Monday and Tuesday) THAT was a pain.

Prodigy Answers
When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
Nighttime would probably be best
Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
The nights of the 21st and the 29th, and any weekday after Sept. 2
After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
I personally think ditching the RB/WR and just adding one more RB would be best, but i’ll win with whatever it is, so it doesn’t really matter.
Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
I think it would be better if there was just a two point bonus for a TD run/pass/catch of anything over 40 yards, w/o the 4 pt. bonus for over 80 yds.
Should there be decimal point scoring?
no
Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
Yeah
Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
yes, week 11
Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
Whatever you do, do not go into week 17.
Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
Stoney Case Division, Mike McMahon Division, Ty Detmer Division (names of QB’s who have started for Detroit in the last eight years)

West Coast Lions in da house
When is a good time of the day to have the draft?
I will be out of town and away from a computer the 20-23 so any day other than those is fine with me.
Are there any days where you know you couldn’t make it to the draft?
20-23 of August
After getting a look at what the roster requirements currently are, do any changes need to be made? (i.e. 1 more RB should be started, no RB/WR, etc.)
Everything looks good to me
Do any changes need to be made to the specific scoring options?
I think negative points should only be for lost fumbles, and vice versa with the defense (only get points for recovered fumbles)
Should there be decimal point scoring?
No, but if there is then that’s fine
Should there be performance bonuses that award extra points for a certain amount of yards gained?
Yeah
Do we need to have a trading deadline? If yes, what week should we have it?
Yes, week 10
Should we have the playoffs start in week 15 and end in week 17 or only last two weeks (meaning they would finish in week 16)?
Finish up in week 16
Finally, do you have any ideas for what the names of the three divisions should be?
Anything is fine

FFL Calvin and the Chipmunks
I am in San Diego and haven’t been able to get on the computer for about a week. Whatever is decided for the finer details is alright with me. I will be able to be there for the draft on the 21st…I am going to take Barry in the first round….he still plays doesn’t he?

Draft Day
I just found out that I got called into work on the 21st, 2nd shift…so the “unofficial” time slot won’t work for me. I got back into DTW tonight to catch the second half of the game on the radio and was very surprised by our defensive tenacity and discipline. Damn, I wish we can keep up this intensity into the regular season.

Although most of us can make the 21st...
It seems like the 20th may work better. Would anyone be against that? I would vote in favor of moving it to the 19th, but that’s really short notice.
