Lions Release 20, Place 2 on IR to Trim Roster to 53 Players

The Lions announced their 53-man roster today after releasing 20 players and placing 2 on the injured reserve.  The two players placed on the IR were running backs Brian Calhoun and Aveion Cason.  With both Calhoun and Cason done for the year, you would have thought that Artose Pinner would make the team, but he didn't.  That means the Lions will carry only two running backs going into the regular season.

Here is the full list of the players released today by Detroit:

QB Drew Henson
RB Artose Pinner
WR Ron Bellamy
WR Devale Ellis
WR Brandon Middleton
WR Kenneth Moore
WR John Standeford
TE Clark Harris
OT Jonathan Scott
OG Frank Davis
OG Corey Hulsey
DE Victor DeGrate
DE Rudolph Hardie
LB Darnell Bing
LB Buster Davis
LB Leon Joe
CB Dovonte Edwards
CB Kiwaukee Thomas
S Greg Blue
S LaMarcus Hicks

I'll post a full analysis of what all of this means tomorrow.

Ha! got me by 6 minutes. Friggin' HTML.

Surprised they only kept 4 receivers and that McHugh made the team as a tight end. Marinelli does talk about the need for fullbacks and stresses the run.

They seem to have a good team this year and hopefully the O-Line can keep Kitna off his back and give him some time. I really hope Smith turns into a stud this year and that Roy and Calvin take over the #1 spot for receiver duos in the league.

Can’t wait for opening day. I’m going to have to follow the game on my phone as I’ll be in the bleachers in Cincinnati watching the Cubs kick the crap out of the Reds. :)

After I hit a home run I had a habit of running the bases with my head down. I figured the pitcher already felt bad enough without me showing him up rounding the bases. ~Mickey Mantle

RB's

You’d figure they’ll sign at least one more person. Even if Tatum Bell and Kevin Smith were the best in the league, you need a third guy. With the other cuts, they’ll probably be able to find someone easily to be the 3.

Hmm

Who’s going to return kicks on this team? McDonald? I know he was returning punts, but I don’t know how much I like that idea.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Lions brought in a Shaun Alexander or Rudi Johnson sometime in the next week.

Furry’s returning kicks. McDonald is only gonna return punts.

What's with the four TE's?

I wonder if they’re gonna make Fitz and McHugh FB/TE’s again, because otherwise that would make absolutely no sense. Only keep two tailbacks and four wideouts, but keep four tight ends?
