Report: Lions Remove Matt Millen
Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com is reporting that the Lions have "removed" Matt Millen from his job with the team. Glazer goes on to say that as of right now it isn't known if Millen was fired or if he left on his own accord, but both are equally likely scenarios thanks to Bill Ford Jr. His comments earlier this week could have prompted his father and team owner, William Clay Ford, to finally make the decision that Millen has to go. At the same time, the comments could have made it impossible for Millen to continue to work for the team considering someone in the organization publicly criticized him.
Whether Millen was fired or left on his own doesn't really make a difference as the main thing is that he is gone. No longer will he be the Lions' team president or general manager, meaning that our wish has finally come true. I have waited for this day for years and honestly can't believe it finally is here. At times it seemed like Millen would never be fired or leave on his own. After all, the Lions went 31-84 during the Millen era and only now is he actually gone.
I'll have much more throughout the day as this story develops. In the mean time, mark down the date on your calendar, because this is a day every Lions fan should celebrate.

just heard this reported by Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio, but you beat me to reporting it while looking for confirmation. Dan Davis, the radio sportscenter guy just repeated the information, which makes it real in my book, something about the guy’s voice….
anyway, happy days might be here! except Wiliam Clay Ford is still running things….
but at least MILLEN’S FIRED! (clap clap clapclapclap)
(they should do that chant at the next home game)

Congrats!
Just saw the good news on ESPN. And I wanted to wish you well (but not TOO well) with your next GM.
Now if someone can just get rid of Al Davis…

good guy…horrible at running a team. keep your fingers crossed that Ford, Jr has the old man’s ear for ideas on a new GM.

A Wonderful Day
Maybe I can actually watch the Lions again. Too many sad days at the sports bar (no Lions on local TV in Dallas…go figure). Now, I will slowly unfurl my car flag…take the t-shirt out of the box.
Don’t let the door hit ya Millen….Good Riddance!!!!!!

Thanks
I’m sure many NFL fans, especially of NFC North teams, are pretty sad he’s gone.

in a way haha
but also, you guys deserve better, it started to remind me of the brewers under selig/bando so I sympathize.
if you guys get a good gm in there and become more competitive then may the best team win. (talking about packers/lions here)

Im leaving work early and buying some chapagne. I’ll make a toast for everyone tonight. Congratulations guys! I can’t wait to hear who we are going to get. Heres hopeing for Jimmy Johnson haha.
This is a great day in Detroit even though I am celebrating in Florida!

Everyone in the office now thinks I'm even weirder than normal
as I just got up and danced a little jig in celebration! That’s great news for the Lions. Now if Sr would just turn over the team to Jr everything would be OK in my world today.
So, who’s the next GM? I’d take Jimmy Johnson for a few years but he gets the big bucks announcing which leaves him time to work on his tan.
After I hit a home run I had a habit of running the bases with my head down. I figured the pitcher already felt bad enough without me showing him up rounding the bases. ~Mickey Mantle

ugh
Jimmy Johnson? I just see that going down the same road that New Orleans did with DITKA.
I, personally, want either a young guy that’s a scout for a team with a solid draft record. Or get Bill Cowher for both GM and Coach duties (Yea, a bit hypocritcal there knocking your JJ recommendation and turning around and recommending Cowher… but I think they are currently in very different mental situations)
by theyellowdart on Sep 24, 2008 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would take Cowher in a heartbeat
The problem is, who would WANT to come to Detroit? As long as Sr is running things, I think it’ll be same old, same old. It’s sad and depressing but here’s to hoping Jr takes over sooner than later.

Yippeeee!
Can we just forfeit the season too and start to put together a real team with the rest of the season. Now that Millen isn’t in charge maybe Marinelli won’t be allowed to just go after Tampa Bay rejects.

Now lets get someone with Super Bowl experience. It’s rare, but its a good day to be a Lions fan today.
Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

I have found joy
Food tastes better, the air smells cleaner, I can feel the sun on my skin, the bags under my eyes have disappeared, complete strangers are smiling and saying hello to me.
It is a new day in Lions Country.

The Big News In Detroit.
Though the news in Detroit today is some of the best news this town has received since the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup this past Spring, we must remember that this is only the first step in the Detroit Lions rebuilding marathon. The organization must gel together and become a "team" in order to win football games.
Will the firing of the General Manager help score more touchdowns or make tackles for loss this season? Of course not, but it is the first step.
by Groove on Sep 24, 2008 1:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Definitely
The next step is hoping the team hires a good GM. Even so, I’m gonna worry about that starting tomorrow. Today, we live it up!

Amazing...
I yelled, I danced, I might have shed a tear or two…this is what it must feel like to win a superbowl…obviously we wouldn’t know but who cares!

I was sick as a dog
Until I saw this piece of news when I got home from work. My nasal passages opened, my headache and neck pain vanished, my cough is nowhere to be found. It’s the happiest day in my life as a Lions fan.

On the one hand
I couldn’t be more happy that the Lions are free! I was watching ESPN classic the other day, saw Millen doing respectable sideline commentary, and was so nostalgic for the days when he was just another talking head. Good guy, horrible GM. Good riddance.
On the other hand, what happens when the lions go 9-23 over the next two seasons? Who are we going to blame now?

Total Transformation?
The rumors coming out of N.Y. and L.A. are that Rod Marinelli is next on the chopping block and Bill Cowher is in range if that happens, is this true?
by Nick4725 on Sep 24, 2008 3:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I wish
I don’t think Cowher would come here unless he was given complete control. And supposedly (according to Pro Football Talk), he just bought a house in Ohio and there are rumors he is waiting for the Browns to fall apart or something.

Does anyone know if Cowher had any control over personnel in Pittsburgh?

I'm not sure
I know that some guy that used to be a scout for the Lions is their GM right now and has been since 2000 or something.

Now to the next steps
I would like to thank you all for for naming me the next GM of the lions, please hold the applause, now onto business…
Oh Mr. Belichick, I hear you are looking for a starting QB, meet Mr. Kitna here. He’s got it all, leadership, experience, an arm that can get the ball to Moss. No, no, he doesn’t have a problem with turnovers at all. What do I want, any draft pick would be nice, how about a 3rd-4th rounder?
Mr. Jones, I heard you might be looking for a WR, well I have a great one here. How about a couple 1st rounders for Roy Williams. I know this is a tougher loss, but realistically, why on earth would be resign here, and I’d rather get something for him then lose him for nothing.
That’s all for today, and I know these moves aren’t really going to happen. But I need a new dream since my Millen getting canned dream has finally become a reality!!! Woo-hoo!!!!! I can’t control my exclamation points!!!!!!!!!
by vocksrocks on Sep 24, 2008 4:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah!
I am so glad the era is finally over.
In the short term it will make no difference though, and so this year is even more of a waste then it was before, now that Marinelli is a lame duck coach. I still don’t trust this team to hire a competent new GM, though.

Lions remove Matt Millan
Yep, we got rid of millan !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that’s great! Now, on with the season! Yes i still want to win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And this coach and some of the players have been in the Super Bowl!!!!!! and i Don’t give a crap if we got rid of him or not there still is something rottin in the ’’D’’!!!!!! We haven’t won but one playoff in 20+ years never a SuperBowl and, the last championship was what over 50+ years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give me a break if we think that getting rid of Millen is the last of our problems! And the Lions started on a losing streak even before Ford SR. owned them!!!!!! I Still say NFL Not Frikin Lagit!!!!! This coach is a Football coach ,no dought about it!!! and he can,t get them winning?? Maybe someone should start having Talks with the players. LOOK at the games! Kitna through’s interceptions right to the other team ! Brian kelly falls DOWN! NO ONE PLAYER knows how to tackle !!! ComeON this is the NFL. And lets not forget how things go for some players when they commit to winning !!!!! I’ll mention Barry Sanders LEAD Blocker Eric Andelsack (not sure last name is printed correctly sorry) He gets ran over by a Semi truck while weed wacking his front lawn!!!!! No, something is just not right ! So be happy for a few minutes and then get back to reality!

Shoot
The Lions might be average now! Dang. And now I can’t laugh at their complete and total ineptness.
Oh wait. They’re still the Lions. Never mind.
I love living in Michigan and NOT being a Lions fan.

This is fantastic news.
I’m a Seahawks/Bills fan…don’t really care about the Lions one bit, but I’m well aware of the angst that this man has put into your franchise through his stupid decisions year after year. Nobody should have to go through that kind of suffering.
You have been liberated. Congratulations!

wonderful news
I am a Saints fan, but a good friend of mine is a Lions fan. I cant get a hold of him but his song has changed to “Its a wonderful life” so I am guessing he is still partying.
Congrats to Lions, but a piece of advice too…. dont think your season or even the next couple will all of a sudden be great years. Its going to take time to get rebuilt. Your biggest draft problem is now gone so a couple years from now you may just have a team that can challange.
Good luck to you!

Getting rid of Millen is only the first step. There’s a long way to go for this team to be even the least bit successful.
