Lions Hire Scott Linehan as Offensive Coordinator
Former Rams head coach Scott Linehan has been hired to be the Lions' offensive coordinator, according to ESPN's Chris Mortenson.
Linehan declined the 49ers' offer Sunday, saying he wasn't ready to commit to his next coaching move.
Linehan, a respected former offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings, was fired four games into his third season as the Rams' coach last September.
Linehan was the Vikings' offensive coordinator when Daunte Culpepper was in Minnesota, so I wouldn't bet on Culpepper being released anytime soon. Hopefully the two can pull off some success in Detroit that rivals what they did in Minnesota.
UPDATE: The Lions have confirmed that Linehan has been hired.

Disgusting
This . . . this is really really really bad news. If this team’s objective is to reincarnate the 90s/00s Vikings on offense, I have some very bad news for them: they don’t have Korey Stringer, Randall McDaniel, Matt Birk, Chris Liwienski . . . my knee jerk reaction is abject depression.

not to worsen your depression, but you forgot a name critical to the latter part of that viking era, “Moss”
Well if the Lions think that Megatron can do what Moss did for the Vikings—outrun and outjump everyone in the league and catch a lot of schoolyard bombs—then I would have to say they are absolutely right.
If they think that Kevin Smith can be Robert Smith, they’re probably wrong. If they think Mike Furrey can be Cris Carter, they are criminally insane. But the biggest piece that they do not have, if they want to recreate that score-points-but-lose-games Vikings offense, is the wall of Hall of Famers up front.

Whoa whoa whoa...
…Back away from the ledge, Ty! Rome wasn’t built in a day! I mean come on man. I am pretty sure that Chris Carter was in Minnesota long before Linehan. Same for that amazing line that you are speaking of. Sorry, but Robert Smith was nothing amazing, a great RB indeed, I am not denying that, but he would have done nothing without that amazing O-Line.
Kevin Smith, did a lot with very little. Megatron is already a great reciever,on the verge of becoming increible, with the potential of rewriting record books. The Lions are two good drafts away from having a goodteam. Cherilus will get it together. Take Oher or Smith in the draft and we are close.
best option available...
Linehan became a head coach for a reason, he did a good job as an offensive coordinator. He failed as a head coach, but that doesn’t mean he fails at being an assistant. There’s a huge difference between the two jobs. He was offered the job in San Francisco and had alot of interest in a couple of places, so he isn’t a terrible pick. Now, if we do a good job in the draft and free agency, we may have a shot at a Falcons/Dolphins turn around, although I’ll wait and see until we get our first victory in over a year.
Seriously
Cunningham… Linehan… why do we keep taking coaches from the ONLY other teams we actually could have beat last year? They are coming from teams that were even worse than us.. and we went 0-16.. W T F…..
Good choice in Linehan
He may not have been a great head coach but he is a very good coordinator and has a lot of experience working with QB’s. If they do end up taking Stafford #1, he a good choice to teach him how to be an NFL QB. My hope, however, is that they dump Culpepper and use either Kitna, Stanton or sign Orlovsky for another year and take a QB later in the draft or wait until next year to take one. Only time will tell.

No More Culpepper
I don’t mind Linehan so much. He did do a good job as a coordinator in Minnesota. Also, the fact that the Niners offered him a job is a sign that he is committed to improving the running attack, which the Lions still need.
What I am afraid of however, is that this will mean another year (another second for that matter) of the Daunte Culpepper era. The guy was completely over rated in Minnesota (exposed when Moss left and he threw 6 interceptions in two games) and he’s completely over the hill. Any ability he did have was lost when he blew out his knee. He has to go almost as badly as Millen had to go.
Linehan
I hope the entire coaching staff understands that Culfumble and Kitnever have no future here. If they feel the need to draft a QB I hope it happens around round 4 or 5. Lots of later underrated talent. FREE THE CAP SPACE!!!!!!
Linehan and Culpepper
I think Matthew DC makes a great point when it comes to the coaching pics so far- that does worry me a bit. However, what is up with all the culpepper dislike? Granted, he didnt exactly prove his worth this season-but he joined it late and didnt have a training camp. Personally, I think we should cut him some slack and see what he can do with a full training camp under his belt. While he certainly wasnt the “Best” QB even in his best years, he was pretty good-as in couple pro-bowls good. I’m personally curious to see what he’ll be able to do with a full camp and full familiarization of a system in his favor (i.e none of that two armband with plays on them type stuff) He’s got a chip on his shoulder and sometimes that can be pretty powerful motivation (look at Kurt Warner this year-I would think most had written him off as well) I’m not so high on Kitna, I think the experiment with him has worn off-good person and all dont get me wrong, but I dont think he’ll have the ability to move in the pocket well enough and I think even after the surgeries Culpepper will hold up better when he does get taken down (which he will, since he’s on the lions)
Back to linehan-even despite the rams, I’m willing to give him a little slack-at least he wont be afraid to throw the deep ball and he cant be any worse then Colletto, in fact, whats the worst that can happen with these lions…..they are pretty much at the bottom right now…even 1-15 would technically be an improvement. Personally, I’ll be happy if they go 8-8. However I’m really hoping (praying) that we dont get stafford, but thats another topic…..
Culpepper
He hasn’t been good in years and he’s made of glass. That’s probably where the “hate” is coming from. If this team is going to become competitive, it won’t be quarterbacked by a guy that “retired” based on the fact that no one wanted to sign him.

NEWS FLASH
He wasn’t EVER good. EVER. Long bombs, third-down incompletions, picks in the fourth quarter, and fumbles at the goal line—that’s been his game his entire career. During Linehan’s three-year tenure, Culpepper threw for over 12,000 yards and 82 TDs—yet, the Vikings lost more games than they won in that stretch (23-25). At the peak of his powers, Duante Culpepper was a quarterback who lost as many games with his mistakes as he won with his arm and legs.
Now that he’s lost a (few) step(s), he’s flat awful. Kitna and Orlovksy both drastically outplayed Culpepper in ‘08, and I’d take Orlovsky over Culpepper again for 2009.

A - F'ING - MEN
Culpepper has always been garbage. He had 2 things going for him that just happened to fit perfectly into Minnesota’s offense (i.e. Randy Moss), a strong arm, and (marginal) mobility. His entire career was built on buying time with his legs and chucking the ball deep for Moss to out-jump the defender for the ball. He could never put together a long drive. He could never throw across the middle. He could never read a defense. The Vikings were always at the bottom of the league in red zone efficiency under his watch. Why? Because that’s where a quarterback has to make accurate, well timed throws. He’s a two-trick pony that lost one of his tricks when he blew out his knee. GET RID OF HIM!!!
y'all are harsher than me
But I feel ya.
