Monday Notes: Savage Resists Lions' Overtures

  • The Lions are losing money.
  • According to a blurb in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, former Browns GM Phil Savage "has resisted overtures to join the Detroit Lions in a personnel capacity."
  • The Lions were granted permission to speak with Titans defensive assistant/quality control coach Matt Burke.  Burke works with linebackers in Tennessee, so that seems to be the likely position for him to coach should he join the Lions.
  • Jim Schwartz isn't going to call defensive plays for the Lions, as he wants to divide his time equally between both offense and defense and worry about managing the game.
  • Schwartz made it clear that the hiring of Scott Linehan does not mean that Daunte Culpepper will or won't be back next season.
  • The Lions spent a lot of time scouting and becoming familiar with draft prospects at the Senior Bowl.
  • SI's Don Banks posted a mock draft that has the Lions taking Alabama OT Andre Smith with the #1 pick and Florida State DE Everette Brown with the #20 pick.
  • The odds of the Lions winning the 2010 Super Bowl are 150-1.

Sell

I know it’s a pipe dream but if the Lions continue to lose money shouldn’t that motivate the Ford’s to sell the team? One can always dream.

The Lions are still worth

a little over $900 million. They can only get better and, with revenue sharing in the NFL, can only become more profitable. Ford would be crazy (ok, he’s already crazy, just look at 8 years of Millen) to sell the team.

Draft day

Trade down to #3 or #4 and draft Aaron Curry IMO. He’s about as sure thing as you can get, maybe the guy that can be in 12-14 pro bowls in his career should he stay healthy. Put him in there with Ernie Sims and all of the sudden your Linebackers aren’t as putrid as they were last year. We also need a DE at the #20 spot and probably at DT and OT in the 2nd round and 3rd round respectively.

Dream scenario

I still say the dream scenario is the Chiefs fall in love with Stafford and are scaried by Mel Kiper’s mocks into believing Detroit will take him. We trade back to 3 and then trade back to seven with the Raider’s who might want to grab Crabtree at 3 before the Seahawks could get him. According to the above mock, Curry would still be around at 7 and we would walk away with a bunch of extra picks. It’s too bad none of that will happen. I do feel relieved though any time I see a mock that does not have us taking Stafford.

I don’t think Curry falls past Cleveland.

The Lions hired Matt Burke this evening

to be their new linebackers coach.
