Lions Retain Gash and Jefferson, Hire Yarno to Coach OL
According to Dave Birkett, the Lions have decided to retain running backs coach Sam Gash and wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, and have hired George Yarno as the offensive line coach. That means that Jim Colletto will not be retained, which is a move I am very happy with.
Yarno was the Buccaneer's assistant offensive line coach last season but was released from his contract after Raheem Morris became Tampa Bay's head coach. Here is more on Yarno:
Yarno coached at Idaho, where new offensive coordinator Scott Linehan played and coached (though at different times than Yarno), and worked on Nick Saban's staff at LSU. Jim Schwartz referenced Linehan's work under “a colleague of mine Nick Saban” when he announced his offensive coordinator's hiring.
I don't know a whole lot about Yarno, but I don't think anybody can do a worse job coaching the offensive line than Colletto did while in Detroit.
Since these moves came out today, I will wait to post a table of what the coaching staff currently looks like until tomorrow. I imagine the other assistant-coaching jobs will be filled shortly so the Lions can get everyone on the same page as the offseason gets ready to go.

hmm . . .
I’m actually torn on this one. Colletto was a putird offensive coordinator, but I actually thought the OL was benefitting from the consistency of having the same OL coach three years in a row—right before Raiola got hurt, I was noticing a definite improvement; it seemed like they were starting to ‘jell’. I think it’s a mistake to believe that any change there will be a good one, and frankly this sounds like a ‘buddy’ hire. Yarno was an assistant OL coach in Tampa—and when the franchise fired all the head guys and promoted all the assistants, he wasn’t retained. I gotta do more research, but my initial impression is not great.
