Lions could hire new head coach this week

Tom Kowalski wrote this column on MLive.com concerning the Lions hiring a coach this week. He goes on to state that three of the Lions' targets are out of the playoffs and the Lions could offer one of them the job immediately.

Those coaches include Leslie Frazier (Vikings defensive coordinator), Mike Mularkey (Falcons offensive coordinator) and Todd Bowles (Miami's assistant head coach/secondary coach).

I can definitely see his reasoning but I'm not to up on any of those three (maybe Frazier as I believe the Lions need to concentrate on defense first). I'd hate to wait for Spags or Schwartz only to lose them to other teams and end up with no good candidates for a head coach.

Big time 1st test for Mayhew. Fingers crossed that he passes with flying colors.

With all of the good coaches out there...

I’m also a little disappointed in this list. I do like both Schwartz & Spagnuolo. I wouldn’t see it as missing out on anyone if we waiting. Gray, Mularkey, Frazier and Bowles will all be there for hire after the Super Bowl. There’s no rush here. I guess of those four, I like Mularkey the best. He wasn’t given a very good shot in Buffalo and had weak drafts during his tenure there (that’s on the GM, not the coach). I think it would signal that Detroit is looking at QB for the first pick in the draft. Obviously the interest here is because of the work he did with Matt Ryan and Atlanta’s quick offensive turnaround.

But again, my point is that they shouldn’t scramble to hire one of these guys for fear of losing out on others. Pay a little green and make sure you are the most attractive team to the best available coaching prospect.

Hiring now means that you don’t go after Schwartz or Spagnuolo, and you don’t even get a chance to talk to Rex Ryan (although the Eagles, Cardinals, and Chargers at least don’t seem to have a big name HC candidate available). I suppose if the team preferred someone to both Schwartz and Spagnuolo, and simply didn’t want to hire Ryan, then it’s a fairly obvious move to hire a coach now, as everybody else is available.

I like Rex Ryan, too

Mostly because there could be the potential to bring in free agents like Bart Scott or Terrell Suggs and plug them into the same 3-4 defense… which I love. That would be a good hire. I think it’s worth waiting for.

It all depends

I want us to hire Schwartz because I feel that he has done the best out of the candidates available (of course I also like McDaniels but I don’t know how things are working out with him). If Mayhew wants somebody that isn’t still in the playoffs, such as Frazier, Mularkey, or Gray then I say pull the trigger so the coach can start getting things in order. Otherwise, hold off and get the coach you want.

dumb...

Killer is just grasping at the somewhat obvious. I honestly think that the report is not based off any “insider” facts or truth, and is merely speculation. And it’s not even entirely logical. For one, currently the Rams, Browns, Jets, Raiders, Broncos, and a very likely chance that Tony Dungy will retire from the Colts, making the total of possible coaching vacancies seven. There’s at least seven candidates that are (in my opinion) qualified, so even if every team fills their vacancies before us, we would still have some options. To rush a pick on one of the most important elements of a NFL franchise because someone may scoop a candidate up is absurd. Ok, let the Rams hire Mularkey or Frazier, that removes one more team from competing for Rex Ryan, Steve Spagnuolo, and Jim Schwartz. I would much rather have one of those coaches than rush a pick before they even perform a follow up interview. I’d hate to see a NFL coaching position be easier to get than a sales associate job in a mall.

I agree...

Killer is simply speculating. He’s even said as much on WDFN. Mayhew & Lewand are staying tight-lipped and there is no information coming out of Allen Park. It’s actually the smartest move they’ve made in a while. Keep your hand covered. The problem is, they have the least leverage of any team. Who would want to inherit this roster and then report to, with no control, two guys that helped the team go 0-16? Ryan, Spagnuolo and Schwartz have options. Why would they pick the Lions? I wouldn’t.

Also, Dungy’s replacement was named last year… it’s Jim Caldwell, the associate head coach. So the Colts won’t be in line for a new coach even if Dungy retires.

who wouldnt come to the lions??????

any coach in the league will look like a genius by going 6-10 this year so why wouldn’t a high profile coach want this job? think about it ==they sign a 2 year deal to see if they can deal with the top brass if not they are out in 2 years with a huge check and alot of credibility for turning the lions from 0-16 then to 6-10 and then to 9-7, then they are out of there with potential for an even bigger contract with another team for doing basically nothing. 0-16 again would be a feat not even the lions and ford could pull off. so the next coach is already a hero and will have a spot on his resume' that states==helped turn detroit lions around from 0-16 disaster to a………….
BEST opportunity in the league right now.

What's the guarantee...

that any coach could go 6-10 next year? Even with a good draft, this team will be lucky to get four wins next year. Don’t listen to Millen’s disillusions that this team is closer than most people think. It’s not. It took me a long time to come to the conclusion of how rotten this roster has gotten. Most coaches can see this and wouldn’t touch the job. The only thing to entice anyone would be 1) control and 2) connections. What I mean by that is, that the coach would need some control in personnel or a good coach would be enticed by a new GM that they worked for – like the Pioli / McDaniels connection. We know that the head coach will have no control in personnel and with no new GM there is no one to be connected to. I think that coaches feel that this is a dead end. It’s always been, so why would 0-16 change things?

Completely agree

Getting a job with the Lions, and a chance to turn things around, is the ultimate challenge. Anyone who is an ultimate competitor should want a job with the Lions.

Rex Ryan

I dont think they should hire untill they have a chance to interview Rex Ryan. I think that with what he has done with the ravens defense should make him a great HC
