Poll: What Should the Lions Do with the #1 Overall Pick?

Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford has announced that he is going to enter the NFL Draft, and Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford will reportedly do the same thing following the conclusion of the Sooners' season tonight.  With Stafford and Bradford both set to go pro, the discussion over whether or not the Lions should draft one of them will really be taken to a new level.  DrewsLions already started the debate here on Pride of Detroit, but I want to get some numbers on what people think.

Below is a poll that asks a general question about the #1 overall pick.  Once we get closer to the draft I will post some specific polls, but let's just keep it general for now to get an idea of what everyone thinks should happen with the #1 overall pick.  Vote below and leave your thoughts in the comments.

Poll
What should the Lions do with the #1 overall pick?
Draft a QB (Georgia's Matthew Stafford, USC's Mark Sanchez, etc.)
248 votes
Use the pick on a position other than quarterback

Super funny

I like the cartoon. Agreed, defense is needed more at this level. We could put up 28 points a game next year with a Bradford, lets face it the only true #1 QB. But if you want to make it an 8-8 or better, we need to D it up. Or we are just sitting home Bit**ing about how we only 3 games. I want a dynasty here. Not that hard, spend the $$$$ on the O-line. The Pats, Dallas or 49ers could not do it with out Defense. And the top 3 Defenses in the league are still in the playoffs. Oh and a Defense minded Head Coach would be nice.

Build a team where a QB can succeed

..instead of taking whatever 22-year old happens to be the top college QB this year.

"Here, kid. Go save our franchise.

By the way, you’ll be getting sacked like crazy because we didn’t use your draft slot or rookie contract $$ to acquire an O-Line to protect you…and you’ll be playing from behind because we didn’t use your draft slot or rookie contract $$ to fix the worst defense in the league."

Why not?

Why are we not discussing Colt McCoy (if he comes out) at all as a possible draft choice if we are going to be stupid and discuss drafting a QB with our #1??? I think he’s going to be better than either one of those two guys.

I think the Lions ought to try and trade #1 for multiple picks, perhaps a late 1st rounder and a other later one(s) if at all possible. If not, then draft the best talent outside of a WR, RB, QB and call it a successful pick until proven otherwise. Lions need a ton of help, and it is not going to be solved with the drafting of a QB, unless they think they can get enough help elsewhere with the other picks they have. I am terrified of another Joey Harrington type draft though.

Personally, I’d like to see Taylor Mays, Jenkins, and/or Joe Johnson GT in a Lions uniform, somehow. Probably not possible though haha.

No QB

I sincerely hope the toothless Lions don’t draft a but at QB. They desperately need so many other things and QB is 50/50, unless a Peyton Manning is available, which I don’t see either Stafford or Bradford being. Draft O-Line or D-Line.

Also, I don’t want the GT guy – we tried the speed rush system (Kalimba Edwards) which is a nice compliment IF you have someone in the middle who takes up 2 guys, a la Shaun Rogers or Jerry Ball in the 90’s. Besides, we already have Fluellen and Avril, who both might be able to play. What ever happened to Francis from Hawaii??? Get that first, then go for speed rush. It will also help LB’s if a guy in the middle is taking a guard and center. We need that presence first on the Defense.

Hey, It looks like I'm not alone...

But it does look like I’m the only one that will publicly post that they want a quarterback. At this time, there are 36 other guys out there that share my view. Where you at guys? I need some help here!

40 folks want a QB

What about Mark Sanchez?

Doubt he will go pro

He could be a second-rounder, though.

I would take Sanchez in the late rounds if its possible

I really dont know the difference between this years crop of QB’s. There isnt a QB that screams out “Franchise”. Mark Sanchez looked awesome against Penn State in the Rose Bowl. He probably looked better than QB if you really think about it. He performed at his best against a good defense in a game that had all eyes on him. I would draft him in the 2nd or 3rd round in a minute

Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

I'd really rather wait until late rounds and go for a sleeper

instead of taking a QB in1st or the early rounds. How about Curtis Painter from Purdue. Could be had in late rounds and may be a suprise. Have Stanton, Orlovsky and Painter on the roster. use the draft for D and depth.

possibilities...

I’m really starting to hope for Jim Schwartz as the next coach, because he’s done an excellent job in Tennessee and he could possibly bring Haynesworth with him at a decent price tag (obviously expensive, but possibly not as high as it could be). That would make it so Darby could back him up, he’d definitely improve Reddings stats, and Avril and White can start on the ends. Then we draft Andre Smith with the #1 and Spikes or Laurinaitis with the 20th pick. Then with the 2nd round pick get a CB/KR or BJ Raji if we decide to replace Redding or if we don’t get Haynesworth. The 3rd round could be used to pick up depth on the OLine and Dline or possibly a TE is there is a guy available that can block and is a threat over the middle. The rest of the picks should focus on depth on defense, especially at LB. I think we should try and keep DanO and Daunte around for the upcoming year, since they have both shown potential and we’ve proven we can score points, we just haven’t been able to score more than the other team due to our defense. I also think theres plenty of FA talent available to build our defense up and add depth. Possibly pick up Darren Sproles (although that may be difficult with his playoff performance) for a one-two punch with KSmith. Wow, this is a lot of rambling. On the QB issue, I don’t see it happening when the little bit of info we got from Mayhew is that our team is too small and that we’ll fix this with the draft. A qb does nothing for the strength and size of your time. Sorry for the scattered thoughts.

O-Line #1

Besides the fact that neither Bradford or Stafford are deserving of a #1 pick, we don’t need one until other things fall into place. With the right coach and right O-Line, almost any quarterback can succeed (see Collins, Kerry) The top two guys at left tackle would be good candidates for the pick. I personally like Oher. As for the next pick, #20, unless Bradford or Stafford fall this far, I say we go either D-Line (Peria Jerry, Greg Hardy, B.J. Raji) or secondary (Vontae Davis, William Moore)

D-Line / O-Line / Free Agency / Coaching

Coaching has sucked the last few years. If it continues to go that way, it doesn’t matter who we draft… they’ll still be a “bust.”

With that said, here’s to a succesful off-season of signing integral coaches, free agents and making better decisions at the draft.

Through the floor

Tebow looked better, even with the picks. Don’t want a QB until late rounds (Curtis Painter). Trade the pick or take the best defensive player on the board.

Tebow didn't look better as a passer

Bradford hit all his targets and didn’t throw any dumb passes. Tebow looked better overall because he’s a 230 pound man child who could just barrel ahead for 6 yards if his receivers were covered. That won’t happen in the pro’s. Bradford was more impressive throwing the ball than Tebow, he just had 2 really unlucky interceptions and at least 1 really costly drop.

Teblow!!

He Had Twice the amount of pads on in the second half. There is noway this guy can take hits like that in the NFL. The sooners smacked him up. Yeah they lost cause of their miscues. 4th and goal, int. on the 2. Not all Bradfords fault. But he is just so accurate, and that is what makes a QB, not one who runs over smaller LBs. Hey Timmy T. "they boys only get bigger in the pro yard. Lets watch him tank.

Value of the #1 pick

i would go Andre Smith or Taylor Mays.

Personally i’m just excited to see who the next coach is going to be.

Chicago fan here, but...

Taylor Mays as a #1 pick?

build for the future

we give up way too many sacks to invest the #1 and all that cash to try and develop a hitting dumby as qb. there will be some good options next year with McCoy still available I’m sure.

build up the trenches and give a future qb a chance to succeed. take one of the two available OTs, I prefer Smith. I’ve heard that Oher has dropped in some poles. I like the possibilty of schwartz bringing Haynesworth and I would love to see the DT, MLB, and SS or FS addressed with STARTERS, not developmental players whether in draft or FA. I like Mays, i would love Maualuga (though not holding my breath) but would be pleased with with the other MLBs available at #20.

Free agency will be big. Buy a D and get a legit number two rb for smith with the revamped line, it’ll open up CJ and probably make our QBs look much better. No QB at #1!

yep
