Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Lions should look at Ron Rivera for Head Coach and pick Sam Bradford.

Lions should look at Ron Rivera for Head Coach.  The defense needs alot of attention.  Don't like Spagnulo, he's a shrimp, how can he get in the faces of the D lineman?  Ron Rivera seems smart and he looks mean.  That's what we need.  Take Bradford first overall and draft the rest Defense!!!!  Bradford is a big boy 6'4" 218 - and the most accurate passer in college football.  Plus he runs a pro style offense for OU.  He reminds me of a better version of Tom Brady when Brady was in college of course.

I hesitate to call OU's offense pro-style

They ran some last night, but that was a spread style offense the whole season. Not that spread style Qb’s can’t be good in the league, Drew Brees is evidence of that.

Bradford is also not the most accurate passer in college football, that distinction goes to Colt McCoy, who set a record this year with a completion percentage at about 77% for the season. Bradford was much close to 70%.

Bradford isn’t the asnwer. Rookie Qb’s didn’t turn around their franchises this year. Flacco passed for 185 yards a game, and the ravens rushed for 150 yards a game. Flacco was good but he didn’t carry that team. Matt Ryan was more important to his team than Flacco, but Matt Ryan also has an offensive line who has been one of the tops in run blocking since Alex Gibbs coached them for a few years, and had the leagues leading rusher in Micheal Turner who came in at the same time.

Take Andre Smith and then whoever is best available on defense. There will always be quarterbacks throughout the draft. You dont’ get a franchise left tackle very often though, and Andre Smith is a franchise left tackle.

Bradford will not be a great pro QB

Especially with an awful offensive line. He rarely got hit at OU.

Stoner

First of all, i love the name.

Secondly, You are 100% right about Chico Rivera. He is an excellent teacher who demands respect from his players. He was a solid linebacker and has Super Bowl experience. It’s no coincidence that once he left the Bears, the Chicago defense has never been the same. Point blank, if the Lions hire Ron Rivera, the Lions will be winners.

Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

and about Bradford......

I really, really am leaning against selecting a QB #1. The 2 QB’s that actually made a positive impression ( Mark Sanchez,Tim Tebow) may not even declare anyway so it would be a wasted pick in my opinion.

QB

I agree as well on the QB I think it would be more worth it to take Tebow over Bradford, but he most likely will stay in school. Same with Sanchez. Rivera would be a great coach I hope they consider him..

Clearly, Spangnulo has been doing a decent job

despite being, as you call him, a “shrimp”. Would you seriously discount a candidate based on how he looks, if he is way more qualified than the others? Picking Rivera because he “looks mean” is simply idiotic and idiocy is not what this franchise needs.
As for Bradford, system QB and we should not pick a QB as we have way more pressing needs.

"That was a great pick...if this was 2002" Me, to guy who selected Barry Zito in a fantasy draft
