Is something big going to happen in our secondary?

Or just the same old shuffle?  The press conference quote from Schwartz seems a little more pointed than usual:

"We're still going to look at a lot of different things in the secondary," Schwartz said Monday. "We're going to look at every possibility there because we need more production out of our secondary with pass defense, but also run defense."

Are we going to see some unknown players called up or signed to start at CB?

Maybe some blasts from the past like Schweigert?

Is Ernie Sims going to change to Safety? (crazy out of the box speculation)

Is Sims going to be traded for a solid CB? (more crazy speculation)

Or will it all settle down and just be Henry, Buchanon, James, Delmas, and Manuel?

Some crazy ideas but...........

You never now with Schwartz. I love that he is so dissimilar from Marinelli. He’s not going to stand for missed tackles and blown coverages. I do expect changes but your guesses (and I don’t think they’re half bad) are as good as mine.

Simms

As a big proponent on trading simms, I don’t think that’s an option right now due to injuries and talant issues.

Cunningham needs that extra LB to be able to put Peterson at DE.

noo way...

they are not moving simms to safety…they need lbs even with levy’s emergence, plus it looks like they will be using peterson as a DE a lot this season. also, i question how well simms can cover wideouts as a safety (biggest reason i think they wont move him).

i like the idea of trading him though…we need desperately need d-linemen

maybe not simms to safety...

maybe Dizon. He seems more suited for that position.

by JCruize on Oct 13, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If we put Sims or Dizon at safety, they would IMMEDIATELY be a target

If I was the opposing offense, and I knew they moved a linebacker out of position into the secondary, I’d be testing coverage matchups against that guy all game long—and probably see positive results!

by n4ry4 on Oct 13, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

At least we'd know where they are going

Right now they target all 4 of our secondary…and see positive results.

I think our secondary is causing problems with our run stopping in addition to pass coverage, so anyone that can cover decent and improve our current inability to stop long runs (missed tackles, bad angles, losing contain, you name it) seems like they could get the nod.

I realize the whole Sims and Dizon to safety is fairly ridiculous, but it’s fun to speculate, and the Lions are using language like the secondary is in an “all options on the table” kind of situation so it’s not 100% ridiculous.

Run defense

I think our run defense is respectable. We’ve been prone to the big play happening but really we’re pretty solid.

The Lions are ranked 21st in run defense but between 21st and 13th you’re only looking at a 13 ypg difference.

Not to shabby if you ask me but always room for improvement.

Secondary handles the long runs

I don’t have numbers but what is our Run defense if you take away runs over 20 yards? I suspect it is really good. I feel like our line and linebackers have been very good at stopping the run so far (visually..can’t say statistically).

the gashes are vs some tough backs

ap ~ he’ll do that again vs most defense, forte ~ he’ll do that again too, mike bell ~ defensively we were at the mercy of an offensive juggernaut & didn’t have a clue what was coming…really…not bad at all.

I know this may come across as a joke, but....

How about trade Sims to GB for Kampman straight up? Kampman is lost as an OLB in a 3-4, Sims would fit the bill. I know teams usually don’t trade within their own division
Getting a stud pass-rusher that must be accounted for may help the secondary coverage.

by JazzyBBP on Oct 13, 2009 12:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think GB would do it

Kampman is an elite DE, Sims is an above average speed LB….the value doesn’t really match. But, as much as I love Sims, I’d go for it.

they wont do it

kampman is a pass rusher in 3-4 scheme, simms (with his size) can play MLB at best. he would be more lost in the 3-4 scheme

The beginning of the end of the misery

by latif on Oct 13, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s a pass rusher in their old 4-3 scheme. He’s 20 yards downfield in pass coverage most of the time now with GB new 3-4.

by JazzyBBP on Oct 14, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

It’s a shame really. Our defensive coordinator has talked about how he is going to get Kampman more involved from now on but who knows.

I actually think the value would be right to trade the two straight up. Of course this would all depend on how good Sims is rushing the passer and his size. Kampman is going on 30 (looking down at msivits question).

I think option 4 is the right one

I don’t see any spectacular moves in the future.

Nobody mentioned moving Anthony Henry to Safety......

……probably with good reason. Henry seems to help us more at CB than S. Moving Henry to S would give us 2 solid safeties and 2 questionable CB’s.

It’s strange….at the beginning if the year, we wondered if Henry was fast enough to play CB still, and pinned our hopes on fast cover guys like Philip Buchanon. That seems to be the template for this type of defense…..blitz LB’s, and have CB’s who have the speed to at least reasonably cover on an island. The reality of it has worked out differently. Not enough QB pressure, not enough blitzing (for whatever reason)…….so we’ve needed our CB’s to be smarter, like Henry. That might also be part (but not all) of the reason why Buchanon has not played well.

But Schwartz say all options are on the table. Hmmm. In order to move Henry to Safety and let him ball-hawk, we’ll need 2 reasonably aware CB’s. Aside from the Mike Wallace TD play vs. the Steelers, Will James has not played too badly so far. So we need one more CB…..preferably a vet with some smarts. We just picked up a 7-year vet, 30-year old DeMarcus Faggins. Another former Titan. He’s 5-10, 178. Not tall, not big. Fast? Smart? If he can match what Will James has done so far, that might be enough to allow Schwartz to move Henry to Safety. Maybe not this week, but Faggins might get some playing time at CB right away, so Schwartz and Cunningham can evaluate if he can start there.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

Not the qualities you want in a safety

From Niyo’s article a few days ago:

“Henry let Hines Ward run free in the end zone on second-and-5 from the Lions 25, then had two missed tackles — first on a crucial third-down reception by Santonio Holmes and then on another run by Mendenhall. His day ended after he was easily blocked into the end zone by tight end Heath Miller on a Mendenhall touchdown run that was nullified by a penalty.”

Point taken

You are correct, sir. Sounds like we better keep Henry at CB.

What happen to Schweigart?

I thought he at least should have been on the prctice squad for his pre season performance. Did he get picked up?

by Lead Hunter on Oct 13, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He's sitting at home sending out pointless "tweets"

I almost wish they would sign him to the Practice Squad, so he’d have something to do. He looked pretty good to me in the pre-season. But what do I know?

by j16941 on Oct 14, 2009 4:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can't sign him to the PS

Only players who have been in the league 3 yrs or less can go on teams practice squads. Schweigarts been around longer than that.

by JazzyBBP on Oct 14, 2009 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was part of the circus tryout the week before the Bears game

I don’t think they signed him back, however. Never heard of a couple of the new guys they just signed to the practice squad. Not sure who was dropped to make room.

Why?
Is Ernie Sims going to change to Safety? (crazy out of the box speculation)

So I’ve seen a fair amount of people on the POD suggest that you guys should trade Sims and for the life of me I can’t figure out why! From the games I’ve personally watched Sims I’ve have always been wishing that we had took him over Hawk in the draft. The guy has great speed. He can hit…hard. He can cover. He really seems to me like he can do it all. With that being said, I haven’t watched him much this year. Has his play been below expectations this year? I know Levy has looked good (former Badger :). I loved the guy there and love him now), but to me Sims is a very good Lb, on the verge of becoming an elite one.

So I ask you, why does it seem so many people want to trade Ernie Sims?

by packallday555 on Oct 14, 2009 9:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oops

I blockquoted the wrong statement! I meant to blockquote:

Is Sims going to be traded for a solid CB? (more crazy speculation)

by packallday555 on Oct 14, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would say that the talk about Sims being traded right now.....

revolves around his current value and our major needs. He is a very good linebacker, and he may end up being elite. However, we have a rookie who has stepped in during his absence and played at a level where we hardly even seemed to notice that Sims was gone. I really like Ernie Sims and would hate to see him go, but if we can make the team as a whole better by doing so, then maybe it would be a smart move in the long run if Levy can take his place and continue to play at a high level.

by KDawg on Oct 14, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

Sims is really the only “star” caliber player we have that could be considered expendable because of depth at his position. As fans who see a serious lack of starter quality at CB, DE, and DT it only makes sense to dream of a trade that brings that and, other than draft picks, Sims seems like our only tradeworthy asset (and by asset I mean another team would actually want him).

by HoorayForEverything on Oct 14, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

+1

Maybe we can get some more picks from Dallas!!!

Jax, TB?… his IS from FSU.

I think alot of teams would be interested in Sims… But I’d hope the Lions would take no less than a 2nd.

by CLF on Oct 15, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Understandable

That is true. You guys have needs on the d-line and in the secondary. You got probably get a solid player along with a high draft pick (1st or 2nd), and maybe another lower for him. I would love for the Packers to get him. We need a guy with good speed who can cover from sideline to sideline, and a hard nosed guy.
