The Trade Deadline is Nearing
Who could possibly end up wearing Honolulu Blue?
Shawn Merriman, Glenn Dorsey, Terrel Owens?
While these names might not be likely to end up on the Lions it is possible that one, or two, ends up in the NFC North. So does Mayhew pull the trigger, does another "big"-er name come to detroit? I would like to start some rumors and hear some opinions on who could, or SHOULD end up in detroit.

We're a little thin at receiver
Maybe we could trade a first, third, and sixth for Roy Williams…
oh, wait :-)

I like the idea of glenn dorsey ending up in detroit.. just me?

I'd be cool with that.....
He’s young and has a lot of upside….
Just say NO to TO!
Shawn Merriman? Now I think we are really dreaming…..even though his play has fallen off since his injury.

He’ll be back to form by the end of the year.

Even if it is a pipe dream
what do you think it would take to get Marryman? What about putting him at end? Man i like the idea of getting a pass rusher .

his price can't be high....
if the charges do trade him it is a hard sell. The charges need a pass rush like nobody’s bizness and that is what Merriman is suppose to provide and in spades, if they try to move him they have to convince other teams he can provide that for them when in essence they are saying he can’t give it to their team. i would say if you are Mayhew and feel that Merriman will be able to get back to form than try and make a trade and the entertaining of offers for Merriman by the charges automatically lowers his value and thus drops the asking price to something affordable.

He's in the end of his rookie deal, which usually means...
a low cap hit…. if they front loaded it as teams do now a days.

where would u put merriman
we’re solid at lb, and i doubt merriman can play DE in a 4-3 (at least, not without steriods)

DEs
Avril – 6’3" 260, Bryan 6’4" 253, Hunter 6’4" 271, Mcbride 6’2" 278, and White 6’2" 273. Merriman is 6’4" 265 and i would imagine he could gain 5 to 8 pounds. I think he could move to DE and play well, we could also use him in some 3-4 looks and some other looks to give our D some new wrinkles. Of course this is all wishful thinking but fun to think about none the less.
by SaginawGuy on Oct 14, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats not what i meant
he hasnt been the physical force since he stopped doping. i kinda question if he can go up against tackles one on one. in a 3-4, he sorta gets to choose which gap to blitz through, not the same case in a 4-3

what about the gaints?
NYG is stacked with D-lineman. I like rocky bernard, osi (cant spell his last name), and mathais (also cant spell his last name). i reckon the Gaints would be willing to trade one of those three

I'd be happy if we got Dorsey
Like KDawg said, he’s young and huge with the upside, he’ll also be playing in his preferred 4-3.

Lions can go with a 3-5-3 defense… set a new trend!

Our secondary sucks anyway
Lets sell out with a 3-8-1 with Avril, Hill, Hunter up front Delmas in the back and a mess of LBs all over the feild
by ATL Lion on Oct 15, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's original....LOL
Bill Belichick’s been known to put 8 DB’s out there….but 8 LB’s????
(BTW, I wonder if the refs will notice we have 12 men on the field?)
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

3-8-1
Wouldn’t we get a “twelve men on the field” penalty for that?

Shawn Merriman— cant afford and don’t need
Glenn Dorsey— i don’t know much about him but looking at his stats he don’t look grate only one sack in 21 starts
Terrel Owens— cant afford and don’t need
We need to look at some DB and line guys though
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??

Don't need?
Uh…. Unless you are talking about the pistons….
by CLF on Oct 14, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Merriman and Dorsey
Would instantly upgrade our defensive line…….Dorsey’s stats have not been spectacular, but he was a high first round pick for a reason. We have a glaring need for depth at DT, and a pass rusher with a motor like Shawn Merriman’s would be awesome (if he can return to form as CLF suggests). We definitely NEED guys like that. There is no doubt about it. Whether or not we can afford to go get them is another issue. I too would like to see the Lions get a solid corner before the trade deadline, but as thin as the league is on young talented cornerbacks? That may be more difficult than it sounds.

imagine for a moment...
most de’s move to olb in a 3-4 scheme…how much production would come with two “blitzing” olb’s moving to de? grady & sammie lee in between eating up bodies in the middle, quick/nimble/strong pass rushers off the outside…and three other lb’s behind them. its almost a 2 dt 5 lb package…ahh the 2-5-4 package!! i could have some fun w/ that in madden i’m sure!

2-5-4...
That’s some NE nickel stuff…. I likey.
by CLF on Oct 14, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know
Merriman is a 3-4 blitzing OLB who, like others, had success switching to 3-4 OLB after being a DE in college, in part because he was a ‘tweener with a lower projected ceiling at DE. I doubt he’d be as effective as a 4-3 DE. Add in his injury/steroid/personal issues and unwillingness to admit that he’s hurting the SD defense (selfish player who puts himself over the team) the way he’s currently playing, and I’d rather pass on him, unless he comes REAL cheap. I also have a hunch he’s peaked, and will never be near as good as he was.
Dorsey? I liked him coming out of LSU. How’s his knees lately? Is he still able to explode off the snap? Willing to move Sims or Backus or draft picks if Dorsey’s knees are ok.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
by GRLion on Oct 14, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only thing anyone will want from us are our draft picks.
And I don’t see any player who is worth giving up any of our picks. I think Mayhew and Schwartz will tough it out this year with what we have and what is available for free so that they can add another two or three starters and more depth in the 2010 draft.
Now if someone makes an offer of some draft picks for our guys…… we should consider it carefully. Really depends who it is that they want and what they are offerring in return.
by NorthLeft12 on Oct 14, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That could be.....
The door could swing both ways, and you never know how some other team values a particular player on our team. It may just be that another team would want a guy like Ernie Sims (or others) and they would be willing to trade a veteran in a position of need for us. Depending on what we could get in draft picks for any of our players, and who that player may be (as well as the depth of that player’s position), I might be open to trading certain players for draft picks. For example, I would trade Backus in a heartbeat for anything 4th round and above…..then I would sign Levi Jones. I truly wonder what would happen right now if Backus were to get injured…..

That Al Davis will come off of Asomugha after franchise tagging him and resigning him to a long term deal……
The Oakland Raiders reached agreement with cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on a $45.3 million, three-year contract that makes him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.

Shawn Merriman
i say we don’t need him b/ we have a good LB core right now.. he only has one year let and would rather play for a playoff team.. if i am not mistaken he was arrested over the off-season for beating his wife as well..
TO
we don’t need him in the locker room or on the fled.. yes we would have the best WR in the nfl with him and CJ.. but just don’t need the ego… bj is fine as num 2
Glenn Dorsey
like i said i am not agents him just stats are not that impressing.. don’t what we would have to give up for him either

Merriman
Was arrested because of a citizen’s arrest warrant made by Tila Tequila (according to him she is not his g/f, she is a “female acquaintance”)…..she claimed he choked her, knocked her down when she tried to leave, and was holding her prisoner against her will. In reality he was trying to stop her from leaving his home to drive while intoxicated…..he was released on bond and has never been formally charged by the DA. If he were to face charges, it would be two felony charges.
Tequila was taken to a hospital for treatment and released. Merriman insisted Tequila “was examined but no injuries were reported.”
Sounds (and probably even smells) fishy to me……here’s another link to the story on ESPN, with video:

I would love that trade but dont think the Pack would let go of a good pash rushing 4-3 DE playing out of postion for a at best over pursuing out of postion OLB that would have to play MLB in the 3-4.
