Trade Deadline Wishes
With the trade deadline approaching, here are some players/teams that I think the Lions need to pursue.
New York Gaints: Its safe to say that this team is loaded with depth and talent at the defensive line. Right now, they have guys like Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard, and Mathias Kiwanuka as backups on their team. Its safe to say that any one of those three guys would be an upgrade to our line. The Gaints have needs too. They are a little short on safeties, and the Lions seem to have a few good backups like Ko Simpson and Kalvin Pearson. Maybe they can work something out.
Julius Peppers: First of all, this is my dream situation, but Peppers seems to be pretty disgruntled in Carolina, and the Panthers aren't exactly winning anymore either, so he has very few reasons to stick around. Jim Scwartz has convinced players like Anthony Henry and Philip Buchanon to play for the Lions; maybe he can convince Peppers too. I think if the Lions gave up their second round pick next year, Carolina would give him up. He was franchised this season, and it doesn't seem likely that he will re-sign next year with the Panthers, so I would reckon that Carolina would want to get something for him, instead of nothing. Plus, they trade d away their next year's first rounder, so this would be a way to regain draft picks. Of course, part of the deal with Peppers would have to be him signing a long-term deal with the Lions, or else its not worth it (this is where I think Schwarts would come in).
Ellis Hobbs: Philadelphia acquired him on draft night for I believe a fourth rounder. At the time, Sheldon Brown, their starting LCB, was in a holdout, so the Eagles needed a safety option. Well, Brown signed a deal with Philly, and Hobbs has been a backup after starting at cornerback for the Patriots from 2006-08. I think he is gonna come cheap (like a fifth or fourth rounder), and would be a solid addition to the Lions

They would rather keep Hobbs as their Nickleback than give him up for a 5th I imagine

a season or 2?
Hell, I’m talking this season!!!! It’s apparent that our whole secondary is a bunch of scrubs with no future(except Delmas)….
Law is a band-aid that would allow this team to win some games now and build confidence for next year.
Get your head out of the box, son.

he doesnt know the system.
it would take him 2-3 weeks just to learn the system, and even then, hes old and I question how well he can play at this stage of his career

#1
There is no set system.
#2. Ty Law has played in many different schemes, many WAY more complex than what the lions run
#3. Unless he is TOTALLY out of shape, he could play the same week that he is signed.
Seriously. Cover one, cover 2, cover 3….blitz here. I think Ty Law could handle that.
Finally, A 75% Ty law is better than the crap rotation that has been playing.
by CLF on Oct 15, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have to agree
Ty Law may be old, but in my opinion he is better than Buchanon, Henry, or any of the other guys we are using right now.

Peppers
is really a pipe dream sadly. I’d love to have him but that guy is going to go somewhere where he has a chance to compete. Don’t be surprised to see Dallas try to go after him or the Jets.

Peppers wants to go to a 3-4 team
and the Panthers would want more than we want to give up for him. Would you give up a 1 or 2 for peppers?
by ATL Lion on Oct 16, 2009 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A 2 this year...
and a one in 2011…. or maybe vice versa… but Peppers would have to agree to a contract first.

I'd like it if the Lions could get some more draft picks for 2010
lets build this team through the draft for the long haul. It’s pretty safe to say the Lions won’t draft a QB or a TE at all in 2010 and won’t draft a LB early unless a real stud drops (if they resign Foote). Prolly won’t draft a Safety in the first 2 rounds either unless Taylor Mays falls to them. I know many want a LT in the first rd, but the Lions did draft Murtha last draft who is a helluva an athletic guy for his size, just needs to be groomed. The 2010 draft is supposed to be very deep in DL and God knows the Lions can use some.
If Glen Dorsey can be had relatively cheap, I wouldn’t mind if the Lions made that move…
by JazzyBBP on Oct 15, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You are on the right track...
But Murtha is a project. I wouldn’t feel bad picking a sure starter OL in first or second rds.
I’d target DE, DL, in first two rds. We need some studs in there on D!
DB in third and fourth. Let’s find our future shutdown corners…
Late rds, best available – WR, RB, and OL especially. We still need WR’s to develop, A. Brown looks like a keeper, but I doubt Morris will stay more than a year or two. Get another fresh RB. Always draft OL…
by Brefstink on Oct 15, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i say LT with rd 1 pick
we’re actually not as terrible at D-line as ppl think. we have 2 starting DEs in place. if sammie hill can step up, then all we need is another DT. either way, they can draft or sign the other DT. we need OL help more. an LG and LT should be their top priority. I would sign a veteran LG, and draft a tackle (maybe the from Ok state will be available)

I think DL or DBs are a higher need right now. If only we can stop a touchdown per game this season…
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a Backus fan, I see your point and we don’t want Staff to get killed back there. I just think our offense can keep us in games but our defense can’t against the good teams.
by JazzyBBP on Oct 16, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
look at the free agency list..
there are some good DLs out there next year (although im not too sure about DBs), so considering that, I would take a tackle

I reckon
We should try to get an elite LT or DT. I have my eyes set on Gerald McCoy at the moment. I also think we need at least another pick, preferably in the 1st or 2nd round. I’m hoping our first 4 picks are OT, DT, DE CB…not necessarily in that order.

For the 1st-Round pick, got my eye on 3 guys
S Eric Berry (Tennessee)-best overall player in draft?
DT Ndamukong Suh (means “House of Spears”)(Nebraska)-can pass-rush AND stop the run
LT Russell Okung (Oklahoma St.)-great agility, great strength for his size, great frame with room to add weight if needed.
Each of these guys is generally considered the best at their position, as well as Top-10 guys. Possible consolation prizes at these positions who MIGHT be Top-10 include
DT Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma)-pass-rushing specialist, classic undertackle, poor run-stopper….think Cory Redding or Landon Cohen.
S Taylor Mays (USC)-great athlete, good football player…..Al Davis kind of guy.
LT Brian Bulaga (Iowa)-technique issues? better as a RT?
CB-none in Top-10……don’t reach.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

the lions could really use peppers
i would do a 2nd round pick for peppers any day of the week. but the lions need to sign him to a long term deal.

i actually like the idea…we should give them a 3rd rounder and a crappy corner

by GRLion on Oct 16, 2009 4:26 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
why dont we trade them
on a weight based system, so like 4 crappy corners is just under Big Baby’s weight so if we throw in Darby, should be an even trade.
by IAmGross on Oct 16, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Throw in Darby anyway
Mangenius won’t know the difference.

russel okung
lions could really use russel okung. could u imagine if the lions gave stafford time and smith running room. this offense could actually be above average. if the lions draft him and then trade their second and third round pick for a 15-25 pick in the first round and get someone like gerald mccoy or eric berry(if he somehow fell tht far) this team could be 6-10 or better.
by David7 on Oct 17, 2009 2:51 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
offense is already above average
this offense would be one of the league’s best if we had a solid line.

By the time the draft rolls around..
there will be 5 to 6 more players that jump into the top ten mix.. A few of these guys that are mentioned in this thread will fall to the second around. I would not mind if the Lions when and got a DE or even a CB. Given the Lions last draft. And how well everyone here predicted the outcome. I am looking for the unexpected from Mayhew and Schwartz

gaines adams got traded
bucs gave away gaines adams to chicago for a 2nd round pick. back in 2007, a lot of experts thought that the lions were gonna draft him. he hasnt done great in T-bay, but 6.5 sacks a season isnt exactly terrible, especially when they are ur first two seasons in the league.

I was sort of hoping we'd trade down and take Adams a couple years ago
Now I’m glad we got Calvin instead.

Forget the OL for now
We are giving up 32.4 points a game (last in the NFL) right now while others in our division are giving up 18 and under a game. It is hard to win win doing that. We need def. in a bad way. If we would have had a def. this year we could and should really be 3-2 right now.
Our OL is not great but serviceable for now. With out a def it really does not matter is we have the best OL or not. We need to stop teams. We are scoring 20.6 points a game (15th in the NFL)
I believe if we could get a pass rush without blitzing and cover people we could be a playoff team. (Not this year of course) It would also make blitzes more effective. Would also allow the offence more touches which should turn into more scores.
Without a damn def the Lions will never be truly competitive.
by CJFeath on Oct 17, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
defense isnt as bad as ppl think
Its true we’re giving up 32 points a game, but look at who we faced so far, brackets indicate team’s offensive rank in NFL: New Orleans (1st), Minnesota (3rd), Chicago (7th). The two games that were close were against Pittsburgh (14th), and we won against Washington (27th). If our line could block we would be 2-3 or 3-2 because we would be able to put up more points and have a healthy QB
