Jim Schwartz's Coy Attitude on Injuries Creating a Motown Monster
Does anybody know how bad Matthew Stafford's knee injury is?
Does anybody know when anybody on the Detroit Lions' injury list will be available to play?
Yes. The players, the training staff, and head coach Jim Schwartz.
But nobody else.
What started as a smart tactic of withholding all but the most essential injury information to cloud opponents' gameplanning has become a behemoth of misinformation.
It seems that Schwartz's philosophy with injury is that everybody is either out for the season or day-to-day and a game-time decision.
Of course, that's a lie.
He knew Stafford and Calvin Johnson wouldn't be ready to go against the Packers. He knows what each player's injury is, the severity of it, and how long it will keep them out.
But you'll never hear him say, "It looks like Stafford's injury will keep him out for two or three weeks." At best, he'll rule a guy out of Sunday's game on Thursday or Friday.
That was fine for a while. Lions fans would watch whoever showed up to play, anyway. Anything that might improve the Lions' chance for a win was okay.
But now it has gotten out of hand.
To compensate for Schwartz's lack of information, we are now seeing a flood of misinformation.
Now there are reports about Stafford possibly needing knee surgery.
And rebuttals to said report.
And rampant speculation about the future of Stafford's season.
And even confusion as to whether or not Stafford is practicing because of fake Twitter accounts.
If Stafford doesn't play against the Rams after bye, things only figure to get worse. Next we might see a photoshopped picture of Stafford's severed leg on the turf.
The sad thing is, fans are so in the dark about Stafford's injury, they might believe his leg has actually fallen off.
Keeping opponents off-balance by playing the injury report close to the vest is one thing. It's a good idea.
But this has gotten out of hand. Nobody knows whether Stafford is going to back on the field in a day or a year.
And is it worth it? Is Schwartz getting enough of a leg up on opposing coaches to justify throwing the entirety of the Lions fanbase into purgatory about the players they pay to see play football?
It's not just Stafford. I can buy that Schwartz isn't sure about Stafford's knee just yet.
He had complications, so they're having Dr. James Andrews look at his MRI. I have my doubts as to whether we'll hear anything concrete about the results, but okay, fine.
But Schwartz is playing every single injury like this. Ernie Sims. Calvin Johnson. Sammie Lee Hill. Dewayne White. Grady Jackson. Gosder Cherlius.
All of them, the same thing. To paraphrase everything Schwartz has ever said about an injury, "We're going to see if they can practice, and if they're good to go, they'll play. It'll be a game-time decision."
Right. A game-time decision that he has made by Thursday.
At 1-5 and coming off an embarrassing shutout loss, the Lions should have shaken any straggling asylum-dwellers of the notion that the Lions are playing for the playoffs this year.
So at the very least, maybe they can show the fans a dim glimmer of information regarding the guys on the injured list to slow this downward spiral of misinformation?
The future attachment of Matthew Stafford's leg might depend on it.

The whole secrecy doesn't worry me to much
As long as I know who’s in or out on Gameday it doesn’t bother me…but then again, I’m a pretty patient person.

The secrecy doesn't bother me...
It’s the chaos that it has spawned. With major injuries to major players, we’re getting bad information from all corners. ESPN speculates Stafford will need surgery. Mayhew says no. Mlive reports he’s practicing based on a fake Stafford Twitter account. Now people are talking about his season being over.
I’m just saying, leak some concrete information so people calm the hell down.

Imagine the headache it's giving opposing d-coordinators
I really love the way Schwartz tries to gain an upper hand on even the smallest things. It’s a great, winning attitude

Can't argue with that.
The attitude is there. It’s a Belichickian style of coaching and management, which is good. He wants to win, and even things that make a tiny bit of difference are enough for him to consider.
But it might be time to let up just a bit on the Stafford thing. The Lions are 1-5, and Stafford, though he will get much better, is not as much a step up from C-Pep and Stanton as, say, Peyton Manning from Jim Sorgi. In other words, no coordinator is writing, “Stop Stafford” on the top of their to-do list.
And right now, chaos is the rule is everybody tries to dig for information in a dry well.

Why "let up just a bit"
As a Lions fan, I will gladly welcome any misinformation or chaos that the coach thinks gives us even the slightest advantage.
Sure, I’d like to know what the status is with Stafford and CJ. But I’m totally okay with the secrecy, even if it’s not something we’re used to.
If the press goes crazy about the non-information they’re getting, that’s their problem. They’re not entitled to team secrets if keeping secrets gives us a competitive advantage, even a slight one.

Me too...Bellichek never says shit about shit...
if the opponent has to game plan for Calvin, and he doesn’t play, they wasted game planning time…if they don’t game plan, and he plays…even better…
I don’t want Jim to say anything about injuries…I would love it if everyone was questionable every game…

I think I agree with you here...
Initially, I could see (and can still see) the “competitive advantage” thing ala Bill Belichick with the injury report. Whatever gives us any kind of advantage… I’m all for that. But I believe the Stafford injury is a different kind of animal. It’s created a local and national media firestorm ripe with rampant speculation when no one knows squat. I think they should come out and give us something about Stafford. They won’t, though. We’ll find out in two weeks, just prior to the Rams game. Yay… two more weeks of this!

Just curious Drews,
Wouldn’t hinting at the truth about Stafford (that he’ll play, or that he won’t play—whichever it is) take away a competitive advantage?
Wouldn’t it help the Rams to know, or at least have some indication, which QB they were going to face?
I guess I just don’t understand how misinformation is not a good thing. I’d rather have Schwartz protect an advantage in going into a game, even if it is a small advantage, than see him worry about what the media thinks.

No, I agree with you
I love the competitive advantage bit. I said that much above. But the Stafford injury – from a fan/media perspective – has turned into a hornet’s nest. Speculation running rampant. Not that Schwartz should give two craps about that, but Stafford is the future of our franchise and you would think they’d want to put out this fire sooner rather than later. Me personally… I want to know. But… if we gain an ounce of a “true” advantage over the Rams or any other team, that’s the way to go. But right now, it feels like they might be hiding the fact that it is serious to put asses in the seats for the Rams game.

I am sure we will not hear anything on Staff
Schwartz seems to be a master of skirting issues, even if it is to keep other teams of balance. Thinking back to the draft, how many people knew he would draft the players he did. Sure he was a new coach that we new little about, but he has kept all info with the team close to his vest. Guess he will do it his way and no one can sway him otherwise.
I do agree though, he should leak something on Staff to stop these petty false stories.

Not a fan of the game
It’s very Belichekian. I’m not sure that’s a necessary thing for the Lions, because this isn’t a team that is competitive game in and game out, where doubts over one or two players might cause an opposing team to prepare differently and might constitute the difference between winning and losing. If he’s practicing for the future where hopefully that becomes the case, then that’s all well and good. But I hate how Belichek plays the game off the field, so I’m not going to be a fan of injury report intrigue when my team’s coach does it either.

WHY?
How many super bowls has Belichek won?
He is the best Coach in footaball…I love the subtrifuge….it is a weapon.

How many super bowls has Belichek won since he stopped taping other teams?
And every one of those previous wins by just a measly field goal. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
But, like I said, the Lions aren’t in a position where a little bit of subterfuge is going to help them any. Right now, all Schwarz is accomplishing is antagonizing the media. He’s still in his honeymoon period, so it’s ok, but what if the Lions don’t significantly improve in the next 2-3 years? You’d like to think they wouldn, but that’s never a guarantee with this franchise. You can get away with that crap if you have a team and a record to back it up, as does Belichek.

Belichick
The Patriots lost the SB to the Giants by one field goal—does that mean the victory for the Giants wasn’t earned or something?
New England was (and still is) a very good football team. They do everything right. They draft smart, they’re smart in their FA decisions, and they have very smart coaches. They also got a little lucky drafting Tom Brady in the 6th round. But, at the same time, he went to a very good football team who knew exactly how to develop and use a player to his upsides.
Their success on the whole is not due to videotaping. Yes, he cheated, but it would be misleading to ignore all the many things NE clearly does very well at for the entire Belichick era and chalk it all up to a camcorder. Even if they had lost one or two of those Superbowls that they won, they would still be very a successful team—one that consistently goes deep into the playoffs.

sure, it makes filling out my fantasy roster a pain in the tuckus, but oh well.

Who cares?!
Besides the Dungeons and dragons fans (AKA: Fantasy Football nerds) who’s business is it really besides the team?? You don’t win wars by announcing your weaknesses and showing what you are coming at them with. That’s stupid.
Mr Schwartz is doing a fine job so far, and it’s pissing a lot of people off because they are not used to the attitude he brings, which is funny because a lot of people aren’t used to our boys WINNING either, so back off and let the man do his business. I’d rather him be focused on his job than what the media thinks/cares…

And..
Before ANYONE opens their mouth and says anything along the lines of “Well we’re not much better than last year…” .. the next time you have a thought… Don’t. Seriously. Don’t.

And before I head out
To the guy who said “And every one of those previous wins by just a measly field goal. Makes you think, doesn’t it?” in refrence to the Pats… What kind of planet do you live on?? A win is a WIN, period. No matter by how many points, be it 1, 2, 3, 20. It doesn’t matter. We can’t say jack because our team has never even BEEN to a Super Bowl (No, the championships in the 50s DO NOT count…)
What kind of arguement is that? Really. Bottom line is: They’ve got the trophies to back it up.
