Matthew Stafford's Knee: Drew Stanton's Last Chance at an NFL Career?

Drew Stanton has caught the brunt of the Detroit Lions’ recent woes.

He was a second-round draft choice in 2007 to be to heir-apparent to Jon Kitna in a Mike Martz-led offensive system.

He was shut down his rookie year, both to nurse a minor knee injury (not unlike the one he suffered a few months ago in the preseason) and so Martz could tinker with his throwing motion.

Of course, Martz only lasted one season. Now, in three seasons, Stanton has seen three offensive coordinators, two head coaches, and four starting quarterbacks.

And none of those starting quarterbacks have been Stanton.

Stanton has systematically gotten a vote of  "no confidence" from every coaching staff he has seen.

The Lions with Martz running the offense put him on injured reserve early in 2007, effectively giving him a red-shirt rookie season.

Jim Colletto was offensive coordinator during the quarterback carousel that was the disastrous 2008 season. Jon Kitna was shut down after three games, then second-stringer Dan Orlovsky went down with an injury a few weeks later.

Then, in perhaps the biggest snub job in Stanton’s young career, Colletto said he wouldn’t play Stanton because he didn’t want him to "embarrass himself."

This, mere weeks after Orlovsky ran out the back of the end zone .

The answer, of course, was not to give the only healthy, available quarterback familiar with your offensive system a shot at playing.

After all, Colletto was the offensive line coach during a season where the Lions gave up 54 sacks. So he knows all about embarrassment.

The answer was Daunte Culpepper. After four days with the team, a previously-retired, overweight Culpepper went out with the play book taped to his arm.

Stanton came in during a goal-line situation and in the fourth quarter of Culpepper’s debut and "embarrassed himself" to the tune of 6-for-8 for 96 yards and a touchdown.

He was effectively ignored the rest of the season, and the next game he saw action was last week at Lambeau Field.

Current head coach Jim Schwartz gave Stanton another confidence boost when they drafted new franchise face Matthew Stafford and paid him more money than any rookie in history.

In other words, nobody is going to give Stanton a shot unless they’re completely out of options.

The only good thing for Stanton is that Schwartz hasn’t gone out to sign Jeff Garcia to ensure there’s no chance of Stanton playing against the Rams after the bye.

That being said, nobody knows how long Stafford will be out with his current injury. But Stanton has exactly that long to show that he has worth to an NFL team, be it the Lions or anyone else.

This is assuming, of course, that Stanton would get the start over Culpepper if Stafford can’t go. Because if he doesn’t, it’s time to take Schwartz’s "best players will play" mantra and beat him over the head with it.

Stanton’s contract with the Lions runs through 2010, so he will theoretically be on the roster through next year.

By contrast, Culpepper is in the final year of his contract, which should bring Stanton up to a permanent No. 2 on the depth chart next year (if the last couple of weeks haven’t already done that).

But if Stanton can’t show himself capable of something by the end of this season, who’s to say the Lions don’t sign someone else in the offseason and bump Stanton down to No. 3 again?

Stanton’s career thus far certainly sets that precedent.

Another precedent is that young quarterbacks who never even make the backup job on bad teams tend to disappear when their contract ends.

Once Stafford comes back from his injury, he’s going to be the guy until the end of the season, and any talk about Stanton will cease.

Effectively, he will disappear.

If you ask Stanton about Stafford’s knee, he’ll say he hopes it heals up as soon as possible so he can get back on the field.

But Drew Stanton is a smart man. He knows that the amount of time remaining on Stafford’s injury is the amount of time he has to make a statement.

In the next few weeks, Stanton will hope to show someone he’s good enough to play football for a living.

If he can’t, his next job will be magician, as he vanishes from the NFL.

Well, now that you mention it...

Yeah, I’m a struggling journalism major trying to A) develop a following large enough to warrant my own blog site or B) attract someone willing to pay me for this (insert laughtrack). I was runner-up (no seriously, so close they sent me a $500 compensatory check) for a job covering the Lions for CBS Sports, but no dice.

Actually, what you see here are selected reposts from the sites I regularly write for. So (shameless plug alert!) if you like what I have to say, take a look here or here. I publish about three times a week, and I’ve been linked to by CBS, Fox, and SI.com.

In other news, Culpepper is back at practice. If he gets the start next week, I’m going to light myself on fire.

You do a good job

Keep it up. You have a pretty bright future. Good luck.
Lighting yourself on fire wouldn’t be a good idea. It would really screw up your plans.

Counter-proposal

If not myself, anyone object if I light William Ford, Sr. on fire?

Thanks for the kind words, BTW.

He had been very unlucky

Must’ve broke a bunch of mirrors while walking under a row of ladders. I hope he gets a shot if Staff remains injured, I’d like to see how he goes in a proper game and not in garbage time.

Obviously there's something

that we as fans aren’t seeing. I mean if he is good enough to be a decent QB he would have been given a shot. I just don’t think he’s even close to as good as most of us remember him at MSU, and that is why he’s not given a shot. I don’t see it being bad luck because he has had chances but no one has believed in him. And Colleto was an idiot, so it can go 2 ways, either he didn’t know what he had in stanton, or stanton really was bad enough to not even be given a chance from Colleto.

by ImPuLsE on Oct 24, 2009 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Consider what you just said

“or stanton really was bad enough to not even be given a chance from Colleto.” I wouldn’t trust anything from that fat steaming pile of shit!!!! I seem to remember a safety we had last year who barely saw the field yet every time he hit the field he shined! Greg Blue stuffed Marion Barber not once but twice in a row in the Cowhands game and also remember the KC game where Tony Gonzalez was torching us? What happened, Greg Blue came in to the game and damn near got a pick on the first toss to Gonzo after he entered the game(the only reason it wasn’t picked is bc of Gonzo ripping one of Blues arms down as he was securing the ball) and the rest of the game Gonzo was actually shut down by Blue. I think Stanton is like Blue.
What I think is these guys are guys that shine when the lights are on and maybe not so much in a practice environment. IMO I don’t care how you look in practice as long as when the lights are on you shine.

by Usmarine0341 on Oct 24, 2009 4:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I tend to agree with you,

some guys are just gamers. If you wait for them to show their full potential in practice, you’ll be waiting a long time, because some guys turn it on and become completely different players on Sunday. That’s why Lions injuries don’t bother me much, at least not this year.

If we lose a game because of some key injuries, but in the process find a couple guys who play out of their head when you give them the shot, then mission accomplished. We’re 1-5, and while I think the team that we put on the field should be solely focused on winning, I also would like to see some future pieces emerge from the shadows. Stanton is the kind of guy who could be much better than his billing, so it’s time to find out if it’s true or not.

by VoiceoftheLions on Oct 24, 2009 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree too

Stanton is a playmaker. Give him a chance to get in the game and make plays.

i guess

mainly looking for any info on staffords and johnsons status vs the rams, really hoping for a win here.

by timmy20 on Oct 24, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

From what I hear,

Stafford is only doing upper-body exercises, stretching his arm and whatnot, in order to keep it loose. But he is not practicing, and they’re not letting him run on that knee yet. Johnson hasn’t practiced at all since the Pittsburgh game. And we’re not likely to know anything more before next Sunday.

by VoiceoftheLions on Oct 24, 2009 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Man it is bad enough.....

That Stafford is hurt…..but CJ being out as well really hurts.

“Stanton came in during a goal-line situation and in the fourth quarter of Culpepper’s debut and “embarrassed himself” to the tune of 6-for-8 for 96 yards and a touchdown."

I was at that game. I do not know if your putting the embarrassed himself in quotes to make it known allegedly or are actually sourcing something but, the Jaguars were up 3, or maybe 4 scores, and they were in prevent d with basically limited defensive starters on the field.

just saying.

by IAmGross on Oct 24, 2009 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

And I recall a series of sacks

to go along with those numbers. I would rather have my QB go 6-for10 and not get sacked twice.

by ATL Lion on Oct 25, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

That's true...

Stanton did look a little bit lost out there when he came in last year. He wasn’t going through his progressions, he took too many sacks. Who does that sound like?

Counter-point.

The Jags’ defense, being up several scores, was able to pin its ears back and pass-rush all day, which contributed to the sacks, and Stanton’s confusion. And sure, maybe they were out there with a prevent defense and second-stringers, but how are we ever going to know if he can replicate those numbers against first stringers if we don’t put him on the field?

by VoiceoftheLions on Oct 25, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

my point would be

hopefully dont have to.

Vote for a healthy Stafford in 2009

by IAmGross on Oct 26, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure,

in a perfect world. But this season is going nowhere fast, and we have a valuable opportunity to find out if we have a viable backup for year to come, or better yet, some juicy trade bait in the offseason.

If Matt Cassel has taught us anything, it’s that rebuilding teams with QB issues (Raiders, Rams, Browns, Bills, Redskins, 49ers, etc.) will chomp at the bit if they see a young backup QB step in and perform well. Now maybe Stanton comes in and sucks it up. A lot. Well, fine. We lose a game (big shocker) and we know not to keep him around when his contract ends.

But if he performs adequately, or better yet, shows some promise, then we’re in an interesting position. If he’s just okay, we can keep him on as an inexpensive backup. If he’s good, teams may want him. And in that case, then Schwartz and Mayhew can work on maximizing his trade value. Because Stanton won’t (and shouldn’t) start once Stafford is healthy. Which makes this situation a very important one for the Lions’ future.

by VoiceoftheLions on Oct 26, 2009 4:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Wait

So they were in a prevent D, but they pinned their ears back and rushed the passer? That is quite the defense that can do both.

So you are saying that we need to get Stanton some reps to increase his value in the off season. Hmmm, that didn’t work out so well for Culpepper. I hope Stafford is healthy enough to come back next week. If he is not, then I expect Stanton out there. If I see Culpepper limp out, I may throw my remote at my TV.

by ATL Lion on Oct 26, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Touche, sir, but

what I’m saying is they didn’t need to fear the run, since they were up something like 4 touchdowns. They didn’t blitz or anything, but the D-line knew that their sole purpose was to get to the quarterback. You can put 7 or 8 guys in coverage, and when you know the offense has to throw, yes, those three or four guys up front can pin their ears and rush the passer. After all, weren’t we just saying how much Drew got sacked?

And I’m not suggesting Stanton get reps to improve trade value. I’m saying we haven’t seen him play, so we need to know if he has ANY value, be it to us or any another team. I mean, can the guy play the game? Do we want to re-sign him and keep him on board as a No. 2? No. 3? Trade him? Cut him? Let him finish his contract and fade away to teaching middle school English in Farmington Hills?

We literally have no idea what he is capable of. We’ve seen him in limited action, always with some qualifier. He’s either in with no chance to win, or it’s preseason, or the second string is already out there, or whatever. Let him start and finish a game, and let’s make some calls THEN.

by VoiceoftheLions on Oct 26, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, Let Stanton START! (if Stafford can't play yet)

Best way to find out. Not garbage time…..a full game.

BTW, Daunte Culpepper is now 0-10 as a starter for the Lions. 0-8 last year, and 0-2 this year.

And as for the 2 preseason wins this year that Pep started (ATL, IND), both were won by 4th-quarter comebacks……….led by Drew Stanton.

Pep’s had 10 chances to start. We’re 0-for-Culpepper. Time for Drew to get a start.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Oct 27, 2009 4:35 AM EDT up reply actions

LOL,

0-for-Culpepper. That’s gold.

I will be very dissapointed if

Culpepper gets the nod over Stanton.

by CLF on Oct 26, 2009 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

Be prepared.....

I think it is almost a certainty if Stafford can’t play, even though I would love to see Drew get a shot at managing a whole game during the regular season.

by KDawg on Oct 26, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I am...

One thing I’ve learned is that for some reason, every coach is apparently allergic to Drew Stanton being on the field. Which confuses me, because Stanton couldn’t put the defense back on the field any faster than Culpepper if he punted the ball himself.
