Vote of Confidence
This bye week gives all Lions fans a chance to reflect on where our team is and where it is headed. We can also think about why we remain loyal to the Lions or why we will abandon them for a team that is more successful, has cooler uniforms, has your favourite player, is in your previous home town, etc. Being a Lions fan is a choice, a completely free and easily reversible choice. Most of us picked them when we were young and have [at least on this site] stuck with them through thick and thin. Unfortunately more thin than thick. But we could leave them behind in a split second. Why not?
For myself, I will not continually look back on the past and moan about what could have been if we had drafted differently or hired a different GM or Coach. That's history and there is nothing we can do to change it. Looking to the future I see better times ahead, primarily due to one person.......Coach Jim Schwartz.
If you see the 2009 draft and offseason as an extension of the Ford/Millen era, you are saying that Coach Schwartz is either a willing buffoon or a powerless figurehead who has no say in the players selected or, for the first six games, played. The Stafford pick and starting has been the key decision of the Schwartz era. If he did not make it wholeheartedly, then the pessimists and naysayers are right. Then the Ford conspiracy theorists are right and all is lost until Mr. Ford and possibly his whole family sells the Lions.
I see the future a lot differently. I see a team on the rise, led by a Coach who is willing to make tough decisions and not rely on old formulas. I see Coach Schwartz as an independent thinker who looks at football in a different light, and is willing to take short term pain for long term gain. I see Martin Mayhew as a bright young exec who made the right choice with Schwartz and who wants to work with someone long term to restore this franchise to its late '50s glory. I see the Fords staying out of the way, as they always have, and let these two guys run the team. I see a QB that is light years ahead of any Detroit QB in my lifetime. I see a new era of competitive and winning football. And I see a Super Bowl with some of the current Lions leading the way.
So, where do you stand?

I'm a bit halfway
I’m dissapointed at the amount of wins, but I still love the direction we are going in and I have complete confidence in Mayhew, Schwartz etc.

As a Lions fan...
…I’m always in a state of cautious optimism.

Yeah, I voted that I'm happy with the progress so far............
but that doesn’t mean I am satisfied or will not criticize what I think are poor decisions. I believe we are on the right path now and just need to stick with it.

I'm like detpistons
I’m somewhere between being happy and being cautious. I like some of the youth we have and I like the coaching staff we have, but they still haven’t really proved themselves yet. I think I’ll have a better idea of where I stand by the end of the season.

I thought he might like that category.
But he is not the only poster on here that believes that the Fords give orders to the Lions management or coaches. I have also heard this same stuff from at least two different sports radio personalities.
I have always wondered why people think that. Ford has never struck me as a meddling type of owner. A terrible judge of people, yes and also someone who seems to enjoy being sucked up to.

I voted #1 but meant to vote #2. Premature clickerlation. Happens to us all, right?
Right?

Well...
you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit. I think Schwartz and the front office are doing a good job with what they’ve inherited from Millen. It will take a few more years, but I believe they’ve turned the page into a promising new chapter for the Lions.
For the rest of this season, I would judge it a success, if the Lions can beat a few of the down teams they face – Rams, Browns, Seahawks, etc. And be competitive in the rest. Penalties need to be reduced, assignments not blown, more turnovers created. We need to build some momentum for next year.
The front office really needs to get this draft coming up right. They did well with this years draft, But we’ve really got to replenish our aged vets and build some depth.
Overall, I like the Lions chances and becoming a respected team in the NFL in the near future, and that would be victory to this fan.

You know.....knowing the Lions....
I would be so stressed if they fired Schwartz after a 4-12 season…
That would be a huge mistake.

Come on lets be real, Schwartz will not get fired this year .....
unless he starts showing up at drive thrus naked and orders french fried dog. It would not matter if he went 1 and 15. This season was going to be very difficult no matter what.

I don't think they'd fire him for that
Joe Cullen kept his job for a few years after that IIRC.

I say he's got at least 2 years here
And that’s only if we are absolutely terrible, and I mean, 2008-terrible.

From what I have seen...
I expect total dominance this week.
…. Unless Culpepper starts, then I’ll expect them to lose.
