0-16 in 2009?
Last year, all anyone did was talk about 0-16 for the Lions after about this point in the season. Of course, I didn't want any part of the conversation for two major reasons....a.) it was my team they were centering their comments upon....and b.) 0-16 is almost as painful to actually think about as it was to actually go through as a Lions fan.
Therefore, in a moment of shamelessness, I do not feel bad about bringing it up when there are other teams that seem to have a similar likelihood of pulling the dreaded 0-fer. And now that we know it's possible for a team to hit the lowest of lows, we can have a legitimate discussion about it. As Lions fans, I think we have a special perspective on this discussion. We know just how bad a team has to be to go 0-16.
Honestly, I feel there is one team in 2009 that is WORSE than the Lions were in 2008. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers. (and the St. Louis Rams are not far behind at all) It's hard to believe, considering that they were a decent team last year overall...especially their defense. But as we fully remember, the Lions were 7-9 in 2007.
The teams that are still winless this year include the Bucs, the Rams, and the Tennessee Titans.
The Titans have entirely too much foundation and talent to go 0-16. There are a good number of teams on their remaining schedule that I feel they have a solid chance of beating, despite their rather dismal showing thus far. Their schedule is: vs. Jaguars, @ 49ers, vs. Bills, @ Texans, vs. Cardinals, @ Colts, vs. Rams, vs. Dolphins, vs. Chargers, @ Seahawks. The teams in bold are the teams I would not be surprised at all if they beat. Now, if they come out of the bye week as flat as they have been....maybe my confidence would change. But I feel like Jeff Fisher is too good of a coach to allow this team to go 0-16.
The Rams are awful this year. But they show little signs of life. To best honest, I'm afraid for the Lions in Week 8 if we do not have Stafford and Calvin Johnson back. It would also be a little scary if we don't have a few of our defensive starters back and healthy. I don't think the Rams are as bad as their record shows. Their schedule has been a lot like ours....a lot of decent teams they've had to play. This is no excuse of course, but I feel like they are one of those teams that could surprise a team one week. However, if Detroit DOES beat them....I'd be soundly worried if I were a Rams fan. If the Lions wipe the floor with them in Ford Field, then the Rams may not be able to recover from it. Their only chance of getting a win after that would likely be a clean up win at the end of the year against a Cardinals or 49ers team that had made the playoffs already.
The Buccaneers are astoundingly awful. One thing that really worries me about this team is that they lost big to the Bills. 33-20.....to the Bills. They are also one of the Redskins' two victories (the other coming against the Rams). If you look at Tampa's schedule, it is not simple. Carolina is the only team I feel they could beat (excpet for a garbage win at the end of the season).
So what do you think? Is anyone going to re-live the horrors we lived in 2008? I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Rams and Bucs do look to have a winless season in sight
I definitely wouldn’t wish it on a fanbase, that’s just terrible. But it would be nice to know that we are not the only team to be that terrible.
I also agree with you Twon about next weeks game. While the Rams do look easy, I’m afraid for our chances if we are not full stength. Plus, we are the Lions, we find a way to lose. I think I’m more nervous for this game than the previous 4 or 5.
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
We should be able to run on the Rams.....
Kevin Smith should have a career day…..key word is “should”. I still say start Stanton if Stafford can’t play, but my bet is that it will be Daunte.
And I bet he plays well too.....
If we stop Jackson from running all over us, I don’t see us losing.
we seem to do well agenst good backs it them crapey backs
that kill us like bell
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
Bell only killed us.....
because of New Orleans’s unstoppable passing attack. The Lions were forced to drop linebackers into coverage to stop the pass, and that made it easy for Bell to run on us.
According to lore...
the surviving members 1972 Dolphins each set aside a bottle of champagne at the beginning of each season, and when the last undefeated team loses a game, they pop the champagne to celebrate still being the lone undefeated team in NFL history. (For the 2007 season, they had to wait until February ’08 for the undefeated Patriots to finally lose to the Giants).
I wonder if the members of the 2008 Lions, wherever they are, had considered adopting a similar tradition for when the last winless team gets a victory each season. Of course, it might be more fitting to “celebrate” with a bottle of Boone’s Farm or Steel Reserve in a brown bag instead of fine champagne, but still…
Of course, you could say the “honor” ought to be shared between the ’08 Lions and the ’76 Bucs, but they only had 14 games, not 16 in a season.
That would be hilarious!
Only the Lions would be drinking the champagne BECAUSE their record is broken(or matched)….lol.
If Goodell has his way....
We could see the 0-16 record broken with an expanded regular season……
I love the comment about Boone’s Farm or Steel Reserve…..LOL!
I hope no team goes 0-16
Its too painful to go through – just ask any of us!!! LOL
I did vote for St. Louis – which by the way on Football Night in America announcer Al Michaels picked St. Louis to beat the Lions this week and Cris Collinsworth, in the background can be heard saying “Not a Chance” which was pretty cool. Anyone else catch that???

I did.
After Al said that I had a momentary temptation to break my Madden game. I didn’t of course. I’m not that stupid. So BOOOOOO Al and YAAAAAAAY Collinsworth.

Yeah, it takes a special brand of incompetence
If the Rams ever hire a broadcaster as GM, who hires a position coach as HC, who hires his daughter’s husband as DC, and they spend eight years using the drafting players with the dartboard approach…then maybe.
Hmm
I think the dartboard approach would’ve been more effective. No, sadly they were going on retarded intuition.

I bet the Rams are looking at the Lions as their best chance to win.....
They will come out pumped for this game…..hopefully the Lions realize this and smash their hopes in a blowout victory.
+1
The Rams are gonna play tough – we must be able to stop Steven Jackson

As I've said
These type of games make me nervous.

Rams vs. Lions
We not only can win this game, we should win this game. The Rams have little passing attack and as long as Stephen Jackson doesn’t go on a tear (we’ve been pretty decent at shutting down running games) this game will be ours. It comes as no surprise that our only win came against a horrible passing attack. Really, how many games could we have won this year if we hadn’t let up so many huge passes? Most, if not all of our games would have been competitive, and we could’ve upset alot of teams.

this game
if the lions cant win this game, they are hopeless. I do expect the lions to win but its embarassing to let a team end a long losing streak( just ask washington). This team has looked pretty good(for the lions) this year other than the greenbay game and i’m excited about the future, but if they cant win this game all of that excitement is gone. If Stafford and Johnson both play and the lions lose their confidence will be gone and their future seems dim.
I hope we have another 0-16 team this year
Sorry, not to wish any ill will on other teams and fan bases – but I really do hope to see another team do it this year. It’s based off my pride and love for the Lions I guess – it just makes me sick that we’re the one team associated w/ “0-16”. I would love to see one or two more teams join the 0-16 ranks so they can quit talking about the Lions being 0-16. I’m so tired of hearing that damn phrase connected w/ my Lions it makes me want to puke. Sorry, but I want to see it happen this year. How about Tampa Bay – let’s give them the torch back, they deserve it since they were 0-14 before we were 0-16

Works for me……and as soon as possible. Back-to-back years with 0-16 teams would certainly help take the spotlight off us.
BTW, on Dec 13, STL is @ TEN. One of them wins (no ties, please). So if 2 teams go 0-16 this year, it won’t be both of them.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
