The Consensus is...

that it is too soon to talk about the draft and the offseason.  Sorry, I suffer from OFS...better known as offseason football syndrome as I saw on another site.  None the less...the only way to deal with it is to let it out.  So...the consensus is that the Lions will most likely have a top ten pick in next years draft.  Barring some wonderful games ahead, this seems to be the common ground.  With all that said, there are still many holes despite the job that Mayhew, Schwartz & Co have done in the last year.  We have our QB of the future developing game over game.  We have a running back that can play all three downs with Kevin Smith, with back up from Aaron Brown (with some maturation here).  The FB position is one of question, but one that I think can be grown in Jerome Felton.   The offensive line, however not great, is performing light years ahead of the 50+ sacks per year over the past two or three years...but still some definite room for upgrade...almost right across the line.  Defensively, well, the LB corps looks solid; easily maintainable with little year over year change needed.  The secondary, well half of it works well...Louis Delmas has some growth & maturation ahead of him, but should he stay the course I see a solid safety developing...and the other half is Anthony Henry.  I thought going into the year this unit would hold its own with Buchannon, King and James.  But none has played well enough to hold their spot from one week to another.  Then there is the D-line.  IMO, performing much better than expected going into the season...evidence through the run defense (minus the half dozen big gashes).  Now this also has a lot to do with the LB's behind them, but, in order for the LB's to be free to make those down hill plays they must be free of blockers.  So although upon first glance the dline doesn't appear to be doing much they are freeing up the LB's to make plays.

Star-divide

Overall:

QB's first half grade C+ (Stafford I give a B)

RB's first half grade C+

WR's first half grade B (injuries have hurt production here)

OLine first half grade C-

DLine first half grade C

LB first half grade B-

Secondary first half grade D

Special Teams (minus Jason Hanson) first half grade F

In looking at the 2010 draft board by Scouts Inc on ESPN.com, after being inspired by Seans post on the seasons second half...I quickly began to envision who our first pick may be.  In looking at the board now, there are many holes still to fill and just about as many options in the top ten picks.  For arguments sake I have only chosen the top fifteen draft eligible players from the board minus the quarterbacks...as IMO we have found our QB for the coming years.  So my question to all of you is, if the season ended today, who would you choose?  It is your pick you are on the clock.  You also have the benefit of having all fifteen draftees available to you...so no one ahead of you has stolen your pick.  I know that a lot will change between now and April...with our Lions, their record, injury, trades, free agency...the board itself, athletes that will climb as sure as there are those that will fall.  But, as of right now, with our needs, who do you choose:

I voted Suh

But it’s still early days isn’t. I liked to have a guy on a D-line that other teams will be frightened of. The OT spot is also one of concern, not to mention CB, but I just like Suh. But that may well change in the offseason.

I voted him as well

Though we have needs at just about every non-LB position on defense. And, of course, we need a LT.

Me too...

…I think a rock in the middle will help the run game and the pas rush. I think safety is out of the question. I don’t think its smart to draft a running back or someone in the secondary in the top 5 or top 10. Those guys tend to be crap shoots. Line help on both sides of the ball would be the right pick in the 1st.

On Suh...

If Tennessee continues to be the worst team in the NFL. I think they will have their replacement for Haynesworth.

by JCruize on Oct 27, 2009 2:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point, hadn't thought of that

Suh will probably be off the board by the time we pick (whenever that is). We’ll have to wait for the standing to shake out, but I’ll guess that STL, TB, TEN ( no wins) all finish below us…..and CLE, KC (1 win) are strong possibilities, as well as WAS, OAK, CAR (the weakest of the 2-win teams)(SEA, MIA also have 2 wins), despite easier schedules/weaker divisions for most of them. So that put us drafting 4th, or maybe 6th, or even maybe 9th.

STL-QB?
TB-Suh/McCoy?
TEN-QB or Suh/McCoy?

CLE-QB?
KC-Okung?

WAS-QB?
OAK-Taylor Mays?
CAR-WR?

Some of these teams have former 1st-Round QB’s on their rosters, but they are playing bad/benched/suicidal/hated by their new coaches/or have schlippery balls.

Carolina traded their first round pick to San Fran

San Fran might be interested in a QB too. Or LT, or a DT, or Berry/Mays.

That explains why I couldnt find CAR on some mock drafts

I like Terrence Cody DT, Alabama

6’5 365lbs. That is a big, big, run stopper in the middle. With alot of depth at both sides of the ball at the line position. I think the Lions can get an OT in the second round. I also would not mind Hardy at like th 5 thru 10 spot in the draft.

But, I sure am glad. We dont need to get a QB. I think it would be slim pickins next draft. Bradford injured. Tebow looks clueless in a pro style offense. Same for McCoy. If Jake Locker of Washington came out. I think he would be the first QB taken

I like big fat DT's

But not all coaches do. I’m hoping Cody shows up to the Combine, jiggles those 365 Lbs, and drops to the 2nd or 3rd Round, so we can grab him.

I wish

but if he plays the rest of the season like last week we may not see him at pick 5 let alone round 2.

why don't we just keep the tradition going?

DAN LEFEVOUR!

no, but i really like Suh as well..but Okung would make me happy as well.

I picked Eric Berry, S, Tennessee.....

….although I would also be very happy with Okung or Suh. Since the NFL rule change a couple years back, the “shutdown corner” is less of an absolute than it used to be (just ask Champ Bailey), and the role of safeties is increasing in importance (just ask Troy Polamalu, Bob Sanders, and Ed Reed). Many teams (like the Lions) are dumping the traditional SS (ask Roy Williams) for a pair of hybrid safeties that can play the pass better….like having 2 FS back there.

The upshot of all that is all 4 DB’s are important back there for pass defense, and one could even make the case that maybe a good safety is more important than a good CB now. The trick, of course, is that there are usually few really good CB’s, which is why they continue to be drafted high when they’re there……but they’re not always there. That seems to be the case this year, with possibly no CB’s in the consensus Top 15 (jury out on Joe Haden), and 2 or more safeties in the Top 15, including Berry, who many see as the Best Overall Player in the 2010 Draft (hint: Best Player Available……and we could use another S alongside Delmas).

Many holes to fill….S, CB, LT, DE, DT, G?, C?, OMG WR?. I don’t want to reach, so I’d prefer Berry, Okung, Suh (in that order), and hope to fill the rest later. Okung is tempting, though. Whether or not we pin our hopes on Okung, I suppose, depends on what quality there is in LT’s available from the 2nd Round on. I need to do more research on this.

Research will be a big theme with me this offseason.

Hands down, if you are on the clock and

Eric Berry is on the board, YOU TAKE HIM, PERIOD. He is so much more than a “good safety”. The guy was a monster when he was a Freshman. And that’s not my SEC homerism talking. He likely would have been a high 1st round pick last year if he had been eligible.

He has those qualities that aren’t coachable, solid football instincts, a nose for the ball, great leadership and intensity, and he’s a big hitter. I just don’t see how you don’t take Berry. It is still early but I don’t think he lasts more than 6 picks.

by MusicCityDawg on Oct 27, 2009 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i'm on the same page

either him or taylor mays. there is a lot to say about having a dynamic safety combination that can give support to the pass defense and run defense. that is our biggest weakness, the secondary…oline can get early round two

Here's some additional info on hybrid safeties and how coaches prefer to use them

Welcome to the modern NFL’s evolving safety position. It’s a position that is increasing in importance. A lot of what you read in this article below also hints at how The Schwartz might use hybrid safeties……he has already referred to them as interchangable “Left and Right Safeties.” Very informative article.

This team needs players

regardless of need. I voted for Okung since our porous offensive line needs help but in all honesty we need help everywhere – including D-line and of course secondary.

Keep drafting playmakers and not for need and I think we should be all right until 2011.

I voted for Okung but really any of the great four would do.

Okung – LT, Berry – FS, Suh – DT, or McCoy – DT.

Players I do not want; Carlos Dunlap, James Hardy, Trent Williams, or Taylor Mays.

Also, I would only be in favour of trading down if we could still get one of the great four above. That would mean being second or third and trading down to fifth or sixth.

BPA from OL, DL or Secondary

At this very early stage my top 4 guys are Berry, Okung, Suh and McCoy in no particular order. While Suh and McCoy are no doubt elite talents, I wonder if they are the best fit for us according to the type of strategy we want to employ defensively. The message I’ve gotten from the team is that we ultimately want 2 HUGE interior DT’s and the latest figures I’ve seen is that Suh and McCoy are right at 300 lbs. While Terrence Cody may be just a step below these two guys, I think our staff may view him as the better fit.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens…it’s good to know that this early projected top 15 has 11 guys that address a huge need for us.

by Stones1981 on Oct 27, 2009 1:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know what you're saying......

…….and I agree, we want big run stuffers in the middle. We need DT’s who fit our style. That’s why I like Suh (albeit my 3rd choice after Berry and Okung), but don’t care for McCoy. McCoy is a classic undertackle, not big, good pass-rusher, poor against the run…..bad fit for us. Suh, on the other hand, is strong, stops the run well, and what many overlook, has a big frame that can hold more weight.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

Here is a review of McCoy from Walterfootball.com

Link: http://www.walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2010gmccoy.php

I don’t think you can call him poor against the run. If we pair this guy with a run stuffer like Sammie Lee Hill, I think you have an ideal interior defence. McCoy penetrates and chases down from his spot, while Hill plugs the middle. We need a DT who can penetrate and provide some interior pressure. Right now we don’t have that so it makes it difficult for our DEs to make plays.

by NorthLeft12 on Oct 28, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I definitely agree.....

Especially with the statements:

We need a DT who can penetrate and provide some interior pressure. Right now we don’t have that so it makes it difficult for our DEs to make plays.

I don’t care who it is, whether it be McCoy or someone else……we need someone who can get some penetration in the middle of our defensive line. Sammie Lee Hill is supposed to be that guy right now, with Grady Jackson plugging the middle……

by KDawg on Oct 28, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I like McCoy as a prospect at the moment, like North said, if we can get pressure form the interior, it will go a long way to getting more pressure from the outside. I also think Sammie can develop into that block eater we need.

Strangely enough......

I had already read that same page from Walterfootball.com. Most of the weaknesses listed there have to do with his run stopping, and lack of strength. I prefer Suh because he can run stuff and penetrate both…..more versatile, and IMO, a better fit for what Schwartz apparently is trying to do. McCoy seems a bit too one-dimensional for my tastes. His skill set reminds me of Landon Cohen……..without the bench reps.

FLAT OUT BPA

Choosing what position to draft is “Millen”.

Don’t be millen, or even halfass millen.

Lions need to draft the top position player available.

ALA- STafford, Pett, and Delmas.

by CLF on Oct 27, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll go with that

There are obvious exceptions, of course……we’re not going to take a QB in the 1st Round. As for me, IMO…..
Best Player Available=Eric Berry
2nd Best Player Available=Okung or one of the QB’s

Luckily, we also could use a safety or a LT……for me, it’s an easy choice if either is on the board.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

OKUNG

Lions need this guy. he is a probowl caliber left tackle and tht is the lions biggest needs. they need defense but if they cant keep stafford up defense dosent help them.

by David7 on Oct 27, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I found something that confirmed my suspicions about the Lions DT preferences......

……..(and DE’s too, for that matter). Some things Schwartz has said so far this year about getting bigger and stronger, stopping the run, and tackling better…….all that implied that among other things, he might want big, strong, fat run-stuffing defensive tackles. I finally found a quote that addresses that directly. This from DC Gunther Cunningham:

But to those who say they should’ve drafted Michael Oher, keep in mind he’s not a left tackle. He’s a right tackle. And the Lions already have one of those in last year’s first-rounder Gosder Cherilus. You think they should’ve drafted a defensive lineman instead? Well, neither Peria Jerry or Ziggy Hood fit what this team wants out of its DTs. “What we’d like to evolve to,” Gunther Cunningham explained last week, “is to have two giant defensive tackles and two real fast defensive ends — then you can do anything you want.”

(hopefully I did the quote thing ok)
Here’s the article:
http://apps.detnews.com/apps/blogs/lionsblog/index.php?blogid=1763

It also confirms what I had guessed about the DE’s. Many 4-3 defenses (not just the Tampa 2) prefer fast pass-rushing DE’s, especially as a complement to big DT’s (unlike the Tampa 2, which has very small, quick DT’s). I know in Madden I’ve had a lot of success with this big DT/fast DE formula.

I too would prefer a big fat run-stuffing DT (Cody if he falls to the 2nd Round) over a smaller pass-rushing specialist like McCoy. I only like Suh for 2 reasons: he already has excellent strength for his size, and his weight distribution is such that he has room to add weight (not so sure about McCoy). McCoy reminds me of Peria Jerry, Ziggy Hood, Landon Cohen, etc……..one-dimensional pass-rush specialist with a quick burst, but undersized and lacking the lower-body strength to consistently stop the run.

Mind you, I’d rather address other positions in the 1st Round, and hope Cody slides to the 2nd Round, or look for other possibilities at DT from the 2nd Round on. In other words, I’d rather take Cody in the 2nd than Suh in the 1st.

Sammy Lee Hill has great athleticism for his size and could be a mismatch as an oversized undertackle like Sean Rogers was (when he felt like it) in the Big Baby/Big Daddy combo with Dan Wilkinson a few years back….excellent at stopping the run. I’d love to see Terrence Cody and Sammie Lee Hill start next to each other at DT.

Let’s see teams run at that.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

Than I’m all for it, SLH already fits the mold, we just gotta be on the look out for his partner in crime next year.
