Anyone know about Practice and the Media
I am curious about the whole practice time with an injury issue...specifically with Stafford. Killer is saying that Stafford did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. But he also says that the media does not get access to the whole practice...specifically the team drills.
So the obvious question to me is...Do teams hold individuals out of the "media" practice and then somehow practice them behind closed doors without anyone finding out? I imagine keeping that secret would be really difficult even if the media is not present.
But then again we've kept the fake moon landing a secret for 30+ years. OK, just kidding about the moon landing...or am I?

apparently,
Killer and Swartz got into it a little today. Swartz was pissed because Killer kept pushing about stafford’s availability on sunday and Swartz didn’t want him to write about it. So Swartz has restricted media access to practice to as little as the NFL allows. They now only get to see individual drills and none of the team workout, which sucks because we will be even more in the dark than we are now. I’ll trust Swartz on this one though. We will need every competitive advantage possible to have a shot at the steelers. It looks like it will be culpepper this week. I don’t know the whole story, but if you listen to the podcast on mlive, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s going on.

The way I understand it is...
that the team can restrict portions of practice from the media and the Lions are taking full advantage of that policy. After Killer and Schwartz got into it, the Lions are using their rights to further shorten the time allotted to the media. From what I can gather from listening to BVO and Killer over the years is that the media sees the warm-ups and portions of the early walkthroughs, but all of the full drills and game plan installation is done behind closed doors.
That all makes perfect sense. What if BVO was on the Steeler’s payroll? He could just watch the practice and report what he saw back. Or in a less “corrupt” scenario, the beat writers could simply be saying “when Stafford was practicing, I saw…”. The Steeler’s org. can simply read that and say “well, Stafford’s playing.” I completely understand Schwartz’s mindset of not giving anyone a competitive advantage. He’s from the Bill Belichick school of thought. But then again, I read all the media reports and like to know what’s going on. I’ll give that up for an advantage to win on Sundays, though.

Schwartz is a smart guy
While it doesn’t keep us as fans in the know, it keeps prying eyes away from important information that could lead to advantages, I’d rather the secrecy.

right but,
Could Stafford have actually practiced Wednesday and Thursday and we just don’t know about it? Or do they have to be truthful at some point and officially say he didn’t practice at all on a given day?

I've actually heard...
that he practiced on Friday fully and did some work on Thursday as well. What that means, I don’t know. I suppose it’s quite possible that he did in fact practice more than the media and Schwartz is reporting. Schwartz has said he won’t name a starter until Sunday and Stafford is mum on everything as well. Schwartz is definitely trying to keep Pittsburgh on their toes and is playing some Belichickian games with both the Steelers and the media. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see Stafford start on Sunday. In fact… this is just a gut feeling without credible knowledge to support it… that Stafford starts.
