The 2010 draft
Now I know we all hope next season will be the year when our Lions start to turn it around, but there's some major holes on this team that they need to fill. Scary to think we need another WR next to Calvin but its the truth. We need that burner who can stretch the field and open things up for him. The defense is a mess, DE is a huge need for us. When we get more pressure on the opposing QB the secondary wont look as bad, one things for sure we sure as hell cannot take a CB in the 1rd or a WR. Rd 1, if we are picking between 2-7 my first choice is Eric Berry S, he's the best player in the draft and is a total game changer and is he best S prospect since Ed Reed (who everyone compares him to) but he will lay a nasty hit unlike Reed. Next to Delmas would be the best S combination in the NFL, and would put fear into any QB. The 2010 draft is very deep in defensive line prospects and Sammy Lee Hill has been another great move by Mayhew (who I have faith in), DT is the best move in rd 2 , putting him next to Hill and getting some pressure up front would extremely smart move for Mayhew.
Brandon Pettegrew has been kinda a lightning rod in Detroit, people need to understand that he's not an Antonio Gates type of TE, he's an amazing blocker and will find his way as a reciver. Just dont get too down on him, he's not a one dementional type of TE so he has a lot to learn but i know he will come around. Trust me this is a guy who doesnt half ass's , he takes ride in what he does. (he's no Roy Williams) Now Mayhew need to find his steal of the 2010 draft at WR and get Calvin some help. I still think we are about 4 players away from being .500 team next year if players stay healthy. Eric Berry is that cant miss type of player for the defense and even with all our other problems we cant afford to pass him up. (we would regret it for a decade)
I'd love to hear what you guys think... Let me know..

your being optimistic w/ four more players
we need in no particular order
safety to compliment delmas
two starting cb’s
two upfield attacking de’s
a dt that can get upfield
two solid offensive guards
starting lt
number two wr as bryant and co are clearly no more than a bunch of number threes, although i am ready to ditch them and give dwill a shot
by my count that is…10
and i agree with you on berry…him or mays i’d be happy with…at least there is some toughness as the last line of defense

no not 2-7 its 1 we are getting
We can’t beat the Rams (and dont give me this crap about how Calvin Johnson was out) we won’t beat the Browns, there goes teams that suck, we have no chance against good teams. anyway my list goes like this
Eric Berry S Tennessee
Terrence Cody DT Oklahoma
Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska (The Guy has Kong in his name worth the pick right there)
Russell Okung OT Oklahoma State (Close to having Kong in his name)
Taylor Mays S USC
i really think that Gerald McCoy is gonna fall a little because of Oklahoma falling apart and if he is there in the 2nd round its an absolute steal but even if he is not you will have guys like Dan Williams DT Tennessee and Mick Williams DT Pittsburgh (Start our own Williams Wall???) so my pick would be Berry/Mays or Okung because there is a big dropoff after them and while there is at DT as well there will be starters maybe into the 3rd round
my Mock Draft Dream
1st: Eric Berry
2nd: Dan Williams/Gerald McCoy
3rd: Mick Williams/DeMarcus Granger
then after that look for a CB and if you want to look for a WR take a look at Mark Dell from MSU i would also look at George Selvie DE USF if he drops to a late round
by JMW62689 on Nov 1, 2009 9:41 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Taylor Mays sucks
The more I watch, the more I think he sucks. Sure he’s physical, but his decision making is flat out bad. I dont think he’s a top ten talent. Maybe not even first round…
Berry I’m fine with…
I’d also target a stud pass rushing DE and a shut down cover CB.
I agree Kevin Smith is avg at best. We need A. Brown to get more touches. He only had 2 runs yesterday, but for 15 yds. A nice avg. He has some speed, Smith does not.
And I think we should get some proven WR free agents this offseason. Whatever the price…
Just livin' the dream...

I dont think he sucks, but is a late 1st round talent...like delamas was.
Eric Berry is the best Saftey prospect to come out of college maybe ever…honestly. Ed Reed wasn’t a possible #1 pick….
Now, I have said before I love Ed Reed..and Eric would have to SURPASS expectations to be as good as Ed…but he is a better prospect coming out of college and worth the #1.
That being said, I would rather have Cody or Okung…and it would be nice to pick up one of the top flight CBs at 2r1p

Berry is a can't miss
Wouldn’t mind seeing Detroit take Javier arenas from bama in the 2nd round. he’s got tons of speed and is an amazing kick returner. One day he could be a 1 or 2 at corner. If berry isn’t available I think Suh is another can’t miss. he’s stout against the run and can rush the passer. He also has 4 or so picks in his career from the DT spot. Truth is we need to continue to get guys in later rounds. Do you remember any 2nd and 3rd rounders doin anything for us in the recent past? Not many. Suh and Berry are my two favs. Shoulda never traded Shaun Rodgers. . .

Nice
Selvie is a great call. I think he is gonna bennefit from the combine though he’s got alot of speed.
by Waitingfortheroar on Nov 1, 2009 9:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree, if Selvie drops, he could be a steal
He’s a fast DE who fits what Gunther is trying to do here.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

So is St. Pierre their other DE in South Florida, but pretty sure he is a Junior and might not come out

I have watched USF a couple of times this year....Selvie is invisible.
The guy had a great sophmore year but has not done much in the next two years. I don’t think he is a very good fit for the Lions 4-3. He is very similar to Cliff Avril. I think Avril is better.
His teammate, JPP, is a better fit for the Lions as he has the size and ability to be a three down DE.
If JPP declares, I would doubt that the Lions will have a chance to get him in the second round.
You never know though.
by NorthLeft12 on Nov 3, 2009 7:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep, he's like Avril, small and fast
…….and he’s been invisible, so he will probably drop. He also seems to fit the type DE that Gunther Cunningham is looking for. It’s not so much replacing Avril as much as it is adding another guy to the DE rotation…..we can keep both. Gunther might get more out of him in this system than he’s shown lately at USF. If so, he could be a bargain in the middle/late rounds. In a way, it’s good he’s dropping. Somebody has to drop. We can’t draft everybody in the first 2 rounds……we don’t have that many 1st and 2nd Round picks, lol.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

RB
This season I am convinced we need a RB as well. Obviously we can’t take him in Round 1 but I am thinking more and more that round 2 is where we will need to get one. It seems at best Kevin Smith is Mewelde Moore not a #1 running back. We need to go defense in round 1 because they suck the worst. I can’t believe how badly every receiver played today. Northcutt is done and Bryan Johnson is a #3 receiver.
by Puntordie on Nov 1, 2009 9:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Anywhere in the DT, DE, OT, CB, S range
I’d go for anyone in that area, still, it’s too early to think about the draft.

After Sunday, where does WR fit in?
After dropped pass after dropped pass, we need some reliable hands on the field besides CJ.
I know we have many other needs, but if they squeeze a receiver pick in there somewhere, I won’t be disappointed.
by n4ry4 on Nov 2, 2009 7:23 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Big possession WR with hands would be nice
Doesn’t have to stretch the field. CJ already does that. Looking for a classic #2 WR….big guy who can catch and move the chains. Usually some late bargains on 6’5" types, if you can look past their 40 times.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

I am a semi-regular on the Jag site and I was warned about Northcutt's drops.
They were glad to see him go because of some big drops that he made while he was with them. There are plenty of slot receivers that are available in the fourth, fifth, or sixth rounds. There are plenty of smallish, quick, sure handed receivers in college that would easily fill that spot.
by NorthLeft12 on Nov 3, 2009 7:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
An honest question
And I am not trying to attack anyone……but were there any WRs available when we got Bryant and Northcutt, that were better options than these two? Was it possible to know for sure?

marvin is still out there i believe
not sure he would come to town but…just sayin…

we could see if they'll let Plax out on Work-Release?
or maybe they’ll release him into the custody of his parents, they could drop him off for work.

Before the Rams game...
I was thinking DT, LT or Berry if he was there. Now I think the Lions really need to generate a pass rush. I still think the Lions will be drafting in the 4 to 7 range. Maybe Greg Hardy from Miss. But really ANYONE will be a big help.
by JCruize on Nov 2, 2009 7:54 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Receiver.
Has just moved up the list…. maybe a nice 2nd or 3rd rounder.
RG- Peterson is a backup.
DE- Cliff Avril got owned by Smith… all day long
CB- Must have atleast half a brain and able to tackle.
RB- Super playmaker. I like KSmith… but theres an AP @ the position(2nd-5th)… you take the AP.(taken 7th).

I've made my preferences known in other threads, BPA at position of need
To summarize my ideal draft:
1) S Eric Berry
2) DT Terrence Cody
3) CB
4) CB
5-7) everything else (especially big possession WR, fast sleeper DE, cheap LT), BPA
Others here have also suggested similar emphasis on the S, DT, CB positions in the early rounds.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
by GRLion on Nov 2, 2009 12:27 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think Berry is going #1
So unless we have the #1 pick (which would destroy our salary cap) this is what I would like to see
1) Suh or Cody (I prefer Suh b/c he is a better athlete and just a better all around football player)
2) Ciron Black-OT LSU or Hardy/Selvie (b/c let’s face it we need D-line worse than anything)
3) Barry Church-S Toledo (if you don’t know who he is look it up but he will probably go in the 2nd he is just too good and can play 4 different positions. He is very versitile and can come up in the box and play LB or drop back in coverage as a safety and can cover like a corner. He actually plays corner sometimes this dude is sick as hell)
4)Best corner available or a WR like Naaman Roosevelt from Buffalo
5-7) BPA preferably all secondary and O-line
I don’t think we need to go after a RB as bad as everyone thinks I just think if you put a halfway decent line in front of Smith he has the talent to be a top ten RB. Look at how many RB take a while to develop not everyone can come in and be great right away like Peterson. I say if you put smith in Minnesota with that O-line he gets 1300-1500 yards it’s all about if there is a hole to run through or not and right now there’s none. Without a place to run there’s not much you can do unless your Barry.
by toled0lions on Nov 2, 2009 4:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I would definetly take Gerald McCoy in the first round too
the DT out of Oklahoma. He is a beast and has a ton of upside
by toled0lions on Nov 2, 2009 4:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't agree
The reason someone like Peterson gets the extra yards isn’t just related to the O line. It based on the fact that he can take a hit and keep going. Smith can’t take and still make something happen. That is the difference between a premier running back
by Puntordie on Nov 2, 2009 5:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Peterson has the opportunity to get to full speed before he is hit
Kevin Smith does not.
by KDawg on Nov 2, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not saying Smith is as good as Peterson by any means b/c he's not close but........
I am saying give Peterson this line over the past year and a half that Smith has had and Peterson’s production goes waaaaay down. You can’t get extra yards when there is no room to get 1 yard to begin with. That’s why I said Barry is the only one that could. B/c he could make 5 people miss in the backfield and still bust a 60 yard run. Look if Smith could get a full head of steam and go 5-10 yards before he gets touched he can run through people and make people miss pretty good. Look at his runs where he can get a 5 yard run before he has to do anything and tell me he can’t do some pretty special things. Just go watch his highlights on youtube and watch some of the stuff he is capable of when he gets a crease to run through. He’s done things before that have made me jump out of my seat but there is no consistent blocking or places to run so he can’t get into a rhythm like Peterson does. Watch Peterson play if he doesn’t get a good rhythm going with holes to run through he doesn’t have good games. Why do you think he’s rushed for over 100 yards only twice this year? It’s b/c the blocking hasn’t been as good this year. It’s all about the O-line without it nobody could run anywhere.

Thoughts
We need to address the offensive line with the first pick, and follow that up with people to help our pass defense with DEs and CBs (i.e. GT’s Derrick Morgan or UF’s Joe Haden)…the rest of the draft should be spent on taking the talents that are best available, hopefully adding a slot WR (TX’s Jordan Shipley may be to much to ask for in later rounds) or interior line play on both sides of the ball (UF’s OG Pouncey or Clemson’s DT Jarvis Jenkins).

My take on the first part of the draft
My breakdown picks not in any particular order. Just a guess-a-mate
Tenn will fill their void left by Haynesworth and get Suh
StL is in a interesting position. Got their LT last season. Will look to find Bulger’s replacement. Locker or Clausen
KC Drafted a DT last season. Dont need a QB. Two seasons ago drafted their starting LT. I see them wanting Berry
Cle will be looking to replace Edwards. So Dez Bryant goes here
TB has alot of needs. But they do have good DT’s. No edge pass rushers. HC Morris is a defensive guy. I see Greg Hardy going to TB
Oak ummmm hard to guess what these guys will do. Have too much money invested in their D-line. So what do you do? Replace your bust at QB? Replace your bust at LT? Or do you replace your bust at FS? None of the above. They draft the BPA. And they feel it is Rolando McClain LB or Tebow( they will use him as a FB)
Wash without a doubt wants a quarterback. Locker, Claussen,or Colt McCoy.
As for our beloved Lions. Lots of hole to fill. But it all depends on how they finish the season. I think they will get the 4th pick. Right behind STL, KC and OAK. So they will have their choice of Gerald McCoy or Okung. I think they go Okung.
The Lions situation is alittle different than some of the other bottom feeder teams. In that, they can go three or four different ways with their pick. Most of the other teams. Will lock in on a particular position. So who they get is just a matter of where they draft.

Tennessee won
and will win more games they aren’t the worst team in the NFL
who will the Lions beat? the Browns? thats their last hope sorry guys its over Lions and Bucs battling for the 1st pick
by JMW62689 on Nov 2, 2009 11:27 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
There are nine games still to go JMW.
But you are saying what I have been thinking. CRAP!
Somehow, I think Detroit will finish at 3 and 13.
by NorthLeft12 on Nov 3, 2009 8:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The Lions could beat any number of teams left on their schedule
It is possible, and it could happen. The Browns tend to play the Lions very tough, and their 3-4 defense can be confusing. Still, they are the worst team left that we face, so we have to hope for a win there. If the Lions can return to playing the way they did against Pittsburgh and Minnesota, and improve slightly in areas where they lacked in those games…..who knows how many more games they can or will win. Certainly none of us know.
by KDawg on Nov 3, 2009 4:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Right now, I prefer we verse the midly tough teams
We seem to step up when we aren’t favoured, I think we have a better chance of upsetting teams than straight-winning, sorry to say. The Browns games will be one to worry me…if we are favoured.

I agree
It is wierd, but the Lions seem to play better against the teams that they are not supposed to beat.
by KDawg on Nov 3, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
+1
that’ll be the story…played tough and won some games that they maybe shouldn’t have…but why didn’t they win the games they should have? that has been a common one over the recent years too…aside from the losses.
