How Bad are the Lions?

1-15? 3-13? or Better?

Here are my thoughts

Star-divide

Ok first off my beef is with Scott Linehan, what the heck is this Playbook? i am so sick of seeing stupid screen plays run in 2nd and Longs and 3rd and Longs. We Drafted Matthew Stafford for his Arm and Decision making did we not? then why on earth do you have him get the ball turn and look to Kevin Smith and throw a Short little Screen? Please someone tell me. Next you have Clavin Johnson sitting on the Bench, why? because he is injured because you decided to throw to him behind or at the line of scrimmage where Safeties and Corners and even Linebackers can take full shots at him. Stupid,Stupid,Stupid. Next you drafted a big time TE then you run a stupid offense he has no part in, what the heck for? Get him involved you idiot! no about Kevin Smith, why the heck is he touching the ball so much? he isn't a established Veteran, he is one year removed from a decent Rookie year so please tell me why he is getting more touchs then anyone on the team? your treating this guy like he is Steven Jackson or Adrian Peterson, well i got news for you... He Sucks!

Ah now for you Kevin Smith, you suck end of story. i am sick and tired of hearing about how you are gonna break through NEXT game. Show up or Ship out. thats it no questions.

Defensive Line come on why don't you try to get through to the QB? i mean is it really to much to ask for? i didn't think so.

Special Teams, Tackle the Guy with the Ball because well thats the way you play Football

Jim Schwartz, why do you have Fitzsimmions on this team? Dan Gronkowski is younger and just as good so bring him up. Aaron Brown and Derrick Williams give them more touchs, i mean what can it hurt?

Martin Mayhew, if you don't Draft Eric Berry your an idiot.

oh and another thing Linehan Backus sucks but he is a better blocker then Felton get that through your head.

Basically that was my rant, i feel a lot better know after i get this stuff off my chest.

Detroit Lions 1-32 (Curse you Washington!)

Unfortunately I think you've got it wrong on a few fronts

The biggest one being Kevin Smith. Smith is solid, if not one of the better running backs in the league. I don’t know what you’re seeing, but its not like he’s running behind an all pro line. The kid keeps his legs moving constantly, and gives second effort on just about every run.

I’m not sure where your assessment of Backus vs. Felton on the blocking tip came from… Backus is a subpar LT, and Felton is almost an H-Back, who blocks well enough and couples as a decent weapon in the backfield. He’s an underrated part of our offense.

I don’t know why Fitz is still on the squad either, and it doesn’t matter now that Gronkowski got picked up off the PS.

The d-line is banged up, with little talent. I’d say Jason Hunter or Dewayne White are our best talents, and that isn’t saying much… Calvin has been hurt this year… but even so, he hasn’t produced as well as he could.

I admit that the offense has made some head scratching calls, but things just haven’t been gelling as of late. The thing I like is I’m not seeing our players get down on themselves like they did last year. Think about it, we’re only one win better, and I’m still seeing fire from each game, regardless of how in it we are.

No one said this year was going to be easy or fun to watch. They’re called growing pains for a reason.

We, as Lions fans, need to dig deep and find patience. Trust me, I know it is hard to understand why we need to be patient any longer. But I think they deserve it simply because they are going to get better WITH TIME. But some people are being entirely too demanding. Stafford got taunted by some fans today, which is sickening. He’s the 2nd youngest QB to ever start in the NFL. People need to let him grow. He will be good. The Lions will thrive. But it wasn’t going to be this year, and we knew that going in.

GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!

i have seen way to much Kevin Smith

I want to see Bryant Johnson,Dennis Northcut,Brandon Pettigrew, Derrick Williams,Aaron Brown and Jerome Felton. Kevin Smith is not a top back in this league, he has the talent to be one but Linehan is running to many short plays for the WRs and the Offensive line sucks, this is why Kevin Smith sucks cause he is in a stupid gameplan

One thing I have learnt after this game was over

is that I need to stop jumping the gun predicting wins. I was sure we beat`em… They seemed so…beatable, idk. But reality is that we share the same cellar and we`re no better than Rams to say the least. It`s just disheartening! And what the EFF is that dropped pass epidemy? If impotence is conveyed by some virus I`d say it travells and strikes different units – secondary, ST, now WR.

I'd leave off Kevin Smith

While he hasn’t been lighting up the show, he has been solid and definitely not our worst performer. To answer your first question, I don’t know. I was thinkint 5-11 before the season and I thought that prediction wasn’t far off before this game. Now, 3-13 if we are lucky. This offseason will be huge.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

Kevin Smith

I think it’s easy to expect too much from KSmith and then be disappointed. He’s not a freak athlete—he’s not a Calvin Johnson or Steven Jackson, and never will be. There’s a reason he was only a third-round pick despite nearly breaking all-time the NCAA yardage record.

That said, he is an every-down back who does everything well that he’s supposed to do. If the O-Line can open holes for him, he will find them every time, but his performance will always depend somewhat on what kind of blocking he gets. With a more talented O-Line and better receivers (someday), he’ll put up some big numbers, but he’s not somebody who can elevate a subpar offense on his own.

Kevin Smith

Look i really do believe he has the talent to be great in this league (And i am talking top 5) but he is playing way to much every game (With the exception of last game) he is getting 90% of the Touches on the Ground plus he is now our leading receiver this is not his fault, i think its Linehan’s. incorporate Aaron Brown and Felton in the run game (No more Maurice Morris) and use Kevin Smith as a option in the passing game but the last option not the first.

Is it Kevin Smith’s fault? no but i am sick of hearing him every week talk of how he is gonna break free.

Yes i was a little harsh on Smith and i am really mad at the amount the coaches have him in for and the amount of touches he is seeing

Not Really accurate

Saying all these guys are better isn’t accurate. Here is the official numbers up to this point. And for where the Lion’s took Smith, they are getting pretty solid value from him (I apologize if the chart doesn’t work out):

Draft #…Name…Games,,,Carries…Yards…TDs…YPC Average
4 Darren McFadden…17…160…645…5…4

13 Jonathon Stewart …23…258…1196…14…4.6

22 Felix Jones…11…67…554…4…8.3

23 Rashard Mendenhall…11…97…476…4…4.9

24 Chris Johnson…22…370…2052…13…5.5

44 Matt Forte… 23…434…1646…11…3.8

55 Ray Rice…20…203…979…4…4.8

64 Kevin Smith…23…363…1369…11…3.8

73 Jamaal Charles…22…90…473…0…5.3

Make no mistake...

…the Rams are who we thought they were! Unfortunately the Lions aren’t what I thought they were, and apparently they’re actually worse than the lowly Saint Louis Rams. This game, so appropriately referred to as the Toilet Bowl, lived up to its billing. For 30yrs now I’ve been subjected to many terrible Lions games. I’ve watched incredible moments and seen great dissapointment. This one was without a doubt the worst game I’ve ever been to. In a battle between two teams struggling to avoid being the worst in the NFL, it looked exactly like that. Mistake after mistake on both sides, with neither team ever really “stepping up” to seize control of the game. The Rams are still one of the worst teams in the league, but the Lions have come back down to the cellar with them…and after that dreadful team effor they deserve to be there.

by Mushy on Nov 2, 2009 7:25 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Your right mushy

We HAVE come down to the Rams and are again one of the worst teams in the NFL. Strangely, this stings worse than the 35-0 beatdown we got in 2001 against the Rams.

I’m so pissed this team is regressing.

Emmett ver. 2.0

I’m not a huge fan of Kevin Smith, but I think you were a bit off on crushing him like you did. His production is a symptom of bigger issues. In fact, I look at him as being exactly like Emmett Smith.

Emmett didn’t have major speed, shiftiness, or power. He was pretty much a north/south runner who hit the holes given to him. He wasn’t known for any super skills. But he was graced with a tremendous offensive line for the majority of his career. He also had a great QB calling the shots, a WR who forced safeties to stay deep, and a crushing FB.

Kevin Smith, if given all the components like Emmett had, would be setting yardage marks as well. Since we don’t have all the players needed to help him, it does get frustrating to not see him break off runs, say, like those guys with the super skills (Chris Johnson, SJax, AP).

The Lion’s drafted him to be a decent yardage pounder; not a slick, speedster, or juke monster. But unfortunately, to be a yardage pounder, you need more players to help, and the Lion’s just don’t have that right now. Now, if we had drafted AP in the first, and were seeing production like K Smith’s out of him, then there would be reason to complain about our RBs. But we took Smith in the third round with the intentions of being a 3.5 yard per carry, no-frills running back. To see him meet these expectations, we need more pieces. And until the Lion’s address these, K Smith is doing exactly as he should.

The OL is debacled......no chance at the Doggone Playoff

“The NFC West is probably one of the weakest… CONFERENCES… in the whole NFC. These guys over here, you have the Cardinals, you have the 49ers, you have the Seahawks, and you also have the Rams…”

“If it slip in Week 1, it slip in Week 8.”
“The one thing that derail a team is a thing called the injury bugs.”
“And then he come back and throw another pass and he drop it.”

More wisdom from Emmitt......in his own weird way, maybe he understands our current struggles as we go through the Rice of Passage

“These two teams have to play the best football that they can tonight, and one must come away with a win.”
“They threw the ball to him a number of time.”
“As a rookie in this league, first of all, no one knows who you are.”
“He’s better than the three quarterbacks you’re looking at.” Kyle Horton in Chicago…
“These first three years was a transitional year for him.”
“When they came out in the third quarter, they played like they was trying not to lose the game.”
“The defense feel like they have to score points defensively in order to win game… games.”
“If you want to stay perfect, you cannot go undefeated with a blemish on your record.”

I tend to agree on one point

K Smith talks an awful lot for a guy who really doesn’t do too much. I’m also sick and tired of him saying “Next game I have to prove myself” or “I want to carry this team”. Well your doing a shitty job. You have just 1 100 yard game (101 vs. Washington) and really don’t do all that much. I wouldn’t mind as much but he talks like he is a premier running back and, quite frankly, he isn’t.

Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith isn’t horrible it would be easier to explain if he was. However he is not the answer at Running back. He is Merwelde Moore. A pass catching running back who can run but is better suited as a flex option. I think he can really prosper in that situation. He can’t break tackles like a #1 running back. For me that is his main issue. You need to get yards after the carry. He is a building block just not the one everyone here thinks he is.

by Puntordie on Nov 2, 2009 12:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You need to get yards after the carry?

As far as I’ve seen, Kevin Smith works for extra yardage on every single play. He constantly keeps his feet moving and his body twisting for more.

The reason he gets so banged up is due to that running style. He’s not a huge back so all the effort he expends trying to get one or two more yards gets him hurt.

Barry Sanders Flashbacks

Ok, I’m only 30yrs old but I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this about every single running back the Lions have ever had. Wouldn’t it be nice to have one of these fabled “decent lines” some day?

And I am of the opinion that it is up to the coaches to coach. Put the players at hand in the best positions to win.

that would be a dream

could you have imagined barry behind dallas’ oline?

by londonlion on Nov 4, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't get some of the offensive calls myself.

I am trying to give Linehan time so I can make sense of the plays called during a game. Have to admidt, I still don’t get it. If he thinks he is being sneeky by running on a 3rd and 8 instead of throwing the ball, he is wrong.
As far as Kevin Smith, as stated above, I would like to see him run behind a good o-line before I pass judgement. He seems to put good effort in his runs so maybe you are seeing a good back with a poor line and bad play calling. Just a thought.

The broadcast on Sunday

showed a graphic that list Smith as being among the top 5 in backs with the greatest percentage of touches per game for their team.
In other words, he handles the ball a lot.
This means he is taking a lot of hits.
Consequently, unless he has a better line, he will break down as he did Sunday.
I too would like to see a better line in front of him, which is why I wanted one of those first two first round picks to be an O-lineman.

by rbanner on Nov 4, 2009 3:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

and they need rotation

they need to play morris/brown 25% more at least…smith cannot have 450 touches for the year and be expected to come out healthy…especially behind this line. i think the graphic showed he was touching the ball something like 55% of all offensive plays…i could be wrong but it was in that vacinity.
