Should the Lions go after Larry Johnson?

So by now everyone has heard Larry Johnson was released by KC.  Check out the story here if you haven't.  So, it brings the question of course, should the Lions bring him in?  I don't know how I feel about it.  He's got a lot wear on those tires, but he's still a pretty talented player.  Might be nice to take some of the load of Smith.  But we might be just as good with Morris and Brown.  Anyway, let the debate begin!

Especially....

….if we can get hm on the cheap……hes got a couple years left in him.

Yes.

1. He’s better than Mo Morris
2. He’s a tough veteran runner
3. He’s has a history of consistancy
4. He’s looking for a fresh start.
5. To control his attitude, just tell the National Media that he still wears diapers.

by CLF on Nov 10, 2009 10:14 AM EST reply actions

We have three healthy running backs on our roster already.

If Smith or Morris got injured and had to sit out multiple games, sure bring in somebody else like LJ.

But he has a lot of wear & tear on his tires. He’s the same age as Maurice Morris (12 days difference), has one less season in the NFL, but has a whopping 1,375 career carries, versus only 634 for Morris.

Agreed

We have a good stable of backs right now, and the only way I would want Johnson is if someone gets hurt.

On this I agree 100%

A RB who is averaging 2.7 & has not played a full slate since ’06? You want him, you can have him.
I think those 416 carries in ’06 have done him in.

by rbanner on Nov 10, 2009 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

+1

and no way i want his attitude, which imploded in kc, on a team that likely will only see one more win this season…don’t need him or his performance right now…or any time in the near future.

by londonlion on Nov 10, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

"a lot of wear & tear on his tires?"

He has played one less season than Morris.

He sat 2 years behind Priest… then exploded for 1700 back to back. Then he had a couple years of injuries…

Compared to Mo Morris, he’s a ferrari!

He’s only a week and a half older than Mo and has one less season under his belt.

He’s a freak that needs a new home…. Not only that, but it would keep the Lion’s roster “rolling” as Schwartz would put it.

You say too much attitude? I’d say that can be tamed by putting diapers on him.

by CLF on Nov 10, 2009 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

Larry Johnson 1,375 career carries, versus only 634 for Morris.

I agree, he’s been a way better RB in his prime than Morris, but both guys are going to be 30 in a couple of weeks. When you’re trying to evaluate 30-year-old running backs, and you already have a guy with less than half as many carries, I think the number of carries is very relevant.

I just don’t see any benefit to bringing in a 30-year old Larry Johnson mid-season when we have three healthy backs on the offense already.

If one of our backs gets injured and we can pick up LJ cheap, then sure, but right now I think we have enough depth at that position.

by n4ry4 on Nov 10, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Morris is a career backup.

That is why he has less carries while playing more seasons.

One could argue that Morris has more ‘wear and tear’ due to trying to stay on a roster for 8 seasons.

by CLF on Nov 10, 2009 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

you really think lj's attitude will be any better as a back up?

mo is a career back up, and doing well at it. he knows his role and does well in it period.

by londonlion on Nov 10, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

exactly...

This team needs competition… Morris isn’t providing enough.

by CLF on Nov 10, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

disagree

Morris is averaging 4.2 ypc
Smith is averaging only 3.33

I think Morris should be getting a few more carries a game.

This guy is a whiner...

…if he couldn’t handle being on the Chiefs, there is no way he could handle being a Lion. He wants to go to a team that has playoff chances, like New England. They have a history of being able to turn whining crybaby’s around.
We are definitely NOT able to take on someone like this right now. We need to be focusing on developing young talent, using vets only as needed to help us achieve that goal.
Remember the Lions are on a three year plan, LJ is a one year plan for some team…

Just livin' the dream...

i Say get him

i would say pick up L.J maybe a one two punch could get some more rushing yards and i don t think K Smooth has it and won t do anything with 20 or more carries Sign L.J.give him a brand new start can t get any worse in the runing game k.s is overratted as it it looks to be

and run Navy`s offense. Wildcat be damned.

assumptions

i like how everyone here is assuming that johnson would sign with detroit. he has had a couple crapy seasons, but there are a lot of other (better) teams that are willing to sign him.
he will most likely be a redskin in the coming days

Johnson and Johnsons

would be nice if we could have three top play makers Johnson Johnsonn Johnson. i think L.J could make a difference in runing game

by Detroit_lionchief on Nov 10, 2009 9:10 PM EST reply actions

I don't think so

Our RBs aren’t horrible at the moment. I don’t see Johnson doing what Smith, Morris and Brown can’t already do.

Just reading on fanhouse.com

Washington is saying they are not interested in him. Also saw that sense he has cleared waivers, no one has put in a claim for him. Probably to due with his fine upstanding attitude.
On a brighter note, Delmas practiced at full speed today according to mlive.com.

by Lead Hunter on Nov 11, 2009 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Uhhhh

Waiver claims can only be made for players with less than 4 years of experience…..when LJ was released, he immediately became a free agent.

He can pick and choose where he wants to sign, depending on who makes him a contract offer (if anyone does).

by KDawg on Nov 11, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

No he went on waivers first

Nobody claimed him because they would have to honor his contract.

ARTICLE XXII

WAIVER SYSTEM

Section 1. Release:

(a) Whenever a player who has finished the season in which his fourth year of credited service has been earned under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle Plan is placed on waivers between February 1 and the trading deadline, his contract will be considered terminated and the player will be completely free at any time thereafter to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club, and any Club shall be completely free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with such player, without penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period. If the waivers occur after that time, the player’s Player Contract will be subject to the waiver system and may be awarded to a claiming Club. However, if such player is claimed and awarded, he shall have the option to declare himself an Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of the League Year in question if he has a no-trade clause in his Player Contract. If such player does not have a no-trade clause and the Player Contract being awarded through waivers covers more than one additional season, the player shall have the right to declare himself an Unrestricted Free Agent as set forth above at the end of the League Year following the League Year in which he is waived and awarded.

(b) Whenever a player who has finished less than the season in which his fourth year of credited service has been earned under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle Plan is placed on waivers, the player’s Player Contract will be subject to the waiver system and may be awarded to a claiming Club.

Section 2. Contact: Coaches or any other persons connected with another NFL Club are prohibited from contacting any player placed on waivers until such time as the player is released by the waiving Club.

Section 3. Ineligibility: Any NFL player who is declared ineligible to compete in a pre-season, regular season or post-season game because of a breach by any NFL Club by whom he is employed of waiver procedures and regulations, or any other provision of the NFL Constitution and Bylaws, will be paid the salary or other compensation which he would have received if he had not been declared ineligible, which, in any event, will be a minimum of one week’s salary and, when applicable, expense payments.

Section 4. Notice of Termination: The Notice of Termination form attached hereto as Appendix G will be used by all Clubs. If possible, the Notice of Termination will be personally delivered to the player prior to his departure from the team. If the Notice of Termination has not been personally delivered to the player prior to his departure from the team, the Notice of Termination will be sent to him by certified mail at his last address on file with the Club.

Waiver system: The procedure by which a player’s contract or NFL rights are made available by his current team to other teams in the league. During the procedure, the 31 other teams either file a claim to obtain the player or waive the opportunity to do so, thus the term waiver. The claiming period is typically ten days during the off-season, but from early July through December, it lasts only 24 hours. If a player is claimed by two or more teams in this period, priority is based on the inverse won-lost standing of the teams. The team with the worst record has priority. If no team selects the player, he’s free to sign with any team, including his previous employer. If no one signs him, he is unemployed — technically fired from the NFL.

Crap.....you are right

Why? Because the trade deadline has passed……he did hit waivers.

How cool would it have been if I woke up tomorrow and the NFL reversed a call cause of this guy on “Pride of Detroit”.

And I was going off of memory with the CBA and what I thought I had read previously. Turns out that what you read was right, and what I remembered was wrong. It was almost right, but I forgot the part where it changes after the bye week….lol
