What Can He Say Today???

I think you all know who im talking about......Stafford didnt look horrible today and he didnt look awesome.....However all I can say is that he handled the constant pressure awesome today.....The minny defense had the ears pinned back all day and Staff new he was gona get hit and actually played a decent game......What else could he have done....yes he had some bad throws but he also had some very catchable balls dropped again.....even by CJ!!!!.....All in all a good game for Staff considering how one demensional the offense was in this game.....Go get em next week guys.

O Line

Adrian Peterson had a pretty Adrian Peterson day against the defense, and our pass rush was pretty nonexistent most of the time, but did you see how god shit awful our pass protection was? If we don’t fix our O-Line fast, Stafford won’t live to see his 23rd birthday.

Both.....

…..remember we lost Cherilus and peterman with injuries in this game…..That had some effect im sure…..But yes Backus and Raoila should be gone after this season.

o line

we should beef it up as much as possible, after seeing petigrew drop so many passes, i wish we would of drafted mike oher. in next years draft we need to draft okung in the first round and sam young in the second. two guys that will push the line and young guys that stafford will get respect from. backus and raiola are done. i am very sick of our o line. im even willing to trade ernie sims. levy is a good player, better than i ever thought he would be.

He definitely didn't play poorly

He had a few miscues, but for the most part he was pretty solid, especially considering some of the pressure he had to face.

What area(s) would you like to cover?

The bottom line was the same as it has been for 6 games now. There are no moral victories in the NFL!
It may be that today the strength and conditioning coach needs re-evaluation. I have seen less bodies get carted off in a Jason Statham movie.
Next, the play calling. Smith actually had 4.6 ypc, yet he had only 12 carries. I realize the fumble did not help, but he still had less than AP and the Vikes did not give up on him.
Additionally, no pass play over 20 yds.? At least not for a completion anyway. Clearly, the coaching staff reigned in the rook.
If you found something good in today’s game, let me know.
For me, it is just another week to get through until the draft, which I can at least hope goes better than this season.

Additionally, no pass play over 20 yds.? At least not for a completion anyway. Clearly, the coaching staff reigned in the rook.

I’d put that one on the O-Line, not the coaches. It’s hard to drop back and make those longer pass plays when the QB has no time to throw at all. If the offense tried letting things develop and going for longer passes, then a lot of those QB hits would have been QB sacks.

If you found something good in today’s game, let me know.

Matthew Stafford today just showed how physically and mentally tough he can be.

He’s getting knocked around like a rag doll and still manages a respectable performance. He got hit helmet-to-helmet near the goal line, got back up and threw a TD. He also didn’t throw any INT’s, despite constant pressure in his face.

The Stafford who showed up today can win games if he gets better protection, unlike the one we saw last week.

B Johnson

pass that bounced off BJohnson’s chest in the endzone was probably 20+yd play.

there were some good things there today. he kept his eyes downfield while shifting pretty well in the pocket. he took a beating (70% of pass plays?) but got rid of the ball pretty well and burned properly. undue criticism of Staff.

That was a TD if Johnson pulls that in. He should have caught that one too.

Not that I want to persue this much.

I really found today’s loss like one’s in the past. Players go down. Plays aren’t completed. An okay receiver like Rice has a career day. And here we are saying the best thing about the day was Staff took a beating like a man!?!
Sorry, that is not enough. I don’t even consider it a positive because he should not have to take a beating.
The rest of the season is simply an endurance test.

by rbanner on Nov 15, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd say it's a positive

when a rookie QB can play a mostly mistake-free game with constant pressure in his face, especially coming off a 5-pick game the week before.

Not a positive for yesterday, but for projecting how good he can be in the future.

I can't disagree with your take this time rb

I want to see some improvement, in a number of areas every week. Saying that things could have been worse [ie. the final score or we won the turnover battle or it was close for almost three quarters] is little comfort.

I was hoping that improved coaching would make a bigger difference. You know, maybe our guys are just that much worse than the rest of the league. I am willing [what choice do I have?] to wait until the end of the season to pass final judgement on whether this year has been a step forward. I am [strongly] leaning towards yes right now.

Banner's right

not too much to be happy about today with the exception that Staff took a beating like a man. I liked it. He has a cannon – with time (via a revamped O Line) he could be a good one. He’s certainly no Blue Skies thank God.

agreed, if Joey was in there, he would have become flustered and taken about 3 more sacks toward the end of the game. Stafford hung on and kept throwing them after taking a beating. tough kid.

Staff played like a man today

I think we build this team in the trenches. O Line or D Line doesn’t matter. We’re so weak in both area’s any help is much needed. I think Schwartz and Mayhew realize this and should draft accordingly. Our D also MUST learn to contain and not give up the big plays time and time again.

The play of the offensive line is very frustrating.

Edwards, the other DE, was killing us today. I thought the Lions did a pretty good job on Allen, but Cherilus and whoever replaced him, did not do very well. Most of the time I listened to the game, the Lions were in a lot of second and third and longs due to the first down plays getting blown up.

Good points for Staff? No INTs in fifty throws. He still needs to improve his accuracy. I saw a number of bad throws with open receivers. I know he was under a lot of pressure, but you have to punish the defence when you get an open man. I think that will come in time. I like how Staff ran the ball and stepped up into the pocket, when he could. He saved a number of sacks.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 15, 2009 6:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Today, you can’t point the finger at Stafford. He got the shit kicked out of him and kept coming back for more. He didn’t fold like Joey would’ve.
This team just needs to draft more talent at every position in the OL, DL and DBs. Another running back wouldn’t hurt, either.

by JazzyBBP on Nov 15, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Is everybody FINALLY off their Eric Berry kick....

after seeing today’s game. O-line, D-line, and CB’s. That’s what we need the most of. The rest of the team isn’t really that bad but pass protection, rush, and coverage are the worst in the league flat out.

And I think this game would have been a lot closer if one player had played. And that player is Delmas. Him not being out there made me realize how dominant and important he now is to this team. If he were out there Peterson doesn’t get over 100 because he did so off of missed tackles that Delmas would’ve made. Farve wouldn’t have had so many wide open receivers because he is a ball hawk. And our D gets off the field more because he is the kind of difference maker that can stop them on 3rd and 3-5. I now appreciate him and his importance to this defense even more after seeing what we are like without him out there. That is why we don’t need Berry. That is a waste of a pick that doesn’t actually improve this team. The things that WILL improve this team are O-lineman and a lot of them.

I don't know toledo.....

My preference is D line [Suh or McCoy] first, then the best LT in the second, then the best CB or Safety in the third. We missed Delmas’ athleticism and leadership out there. I don’t think it would have made a big difference, but it would have helped.

I don’t mean to sound too pessimistic, but we are probably picking in the top two or three. The Browns might be the only team below us, and that is only if we beat them.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 15, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I just think it's clear without him on the field our run D isn't nearly as good.

Peterson got most of his yards after first contact and Delmas just doesn’t miss tackles. Even against Peterson the first time we played them Delmas was wrecking him. I don’t think he broke one Delmas tackle in the first game. And you also have to realize that with him the deep half of his side of the field is off limits to passing. So we could have limited those long passes to Rice that absolutely killed us all game.

it there anyway the NFL will let the Lions parlay 7 draft pick...into 3 1st round picks..?

that way the Lions can draft a LT, C, and a G.

Hmmm.........

If the game would have been a lot closer if our good safety had played………..well then, what if we had 2 good safeties, so they couldn’t throw away from Delmas?

A hole in the secondary is like a hole in a bucket. It doesn’t matter where or how many……if you have at least one, all the water will run out.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

I agree with you on this.

This may be one of the best years for Safeties coming out in the draft. There will be some good players available in the third round. There is no magic pick that will solve all our problems. The Lions need to hit on at least five draft picks in 2010. I mean three guys who can start from day one and at least two who provide depth with the ability to develop into starters.

one of the biggest compliments given to the new england defense

which is pretty good last i checked…not number one…but always in top ten by the end of the year…the compliment was to the two young safeties back there, that should enjoy many years of watching a defense be built in front of them. they are already making plays, just imagine what they’ll do if they continue to play together for the next ten years. i want an oline…but i would really love to get delmas a partner in crime back there.

by londonlion on Nov 16, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not with a first round pick!

It’s not like that’s the only pick we have. Do I need to name off all the safeties in this draft again for people to realize how many talented players that can do what Berry does there are. Use a 3rd or 4th round pick on Kam Chancellor or Justin Woodall or Kurt Coleman or Randy Phillips or Myron Rolle. There is so much talent at safety in this years draft that it is retarded to waste a first round pick on one when it is not even close to on of our biggest needs. Besides I could care less what anybody says I have watched every Tennessee game that has been on tv and Berry is not as special as some of you think. I see him getting burnt deep, getting LIT UP by Tebow, and taking bad angles on tackles. For a player who is a supposed phenom and worth a top 3 pick I would expect to see him not getting beat as much as he does.

And for those videos put up by whoever of Berry’s highlights. I could find the exact same kind of videos for every other safety in this draft. That’s why they’re called highlights it’s his best plays not the plays he makes every time he is on the field.

by toled0lions on Nov 17, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you here 100% toled0lions

Eric Berry is over rated and is just one of many good safties that will come out in the 2010 draft. He is getting a ton of media attention (a lot like Jason Smith, Matt Stafford, Eugene Monroe, etc) which is why he is being touted as a high first round talent. I absolutely agree that he is not worth a top 5 pick, especially given the fact that we desperately need a blue chip DT at a minimum. Northleft12 provided a link that shows that, statistically, Jeff Backus is a top 10 LT in the league (not that I agree, but the stats say so). I would say that he is horrible against a good pass rusher, and average at run blocking. I think we would be much better suited by drafting a DT or a LT than reaching for a guy like Eric Berry with our first pick.

by KDawg on Nov 17, 2009 2:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

let me be clear here...

i have resigned to the oline need after the weekend…but with that much safety talent out there, although i have not read this but trust in you, i will be disappointed if we don’t find delmas a partner back there…especially if there are several highly talented at the position

by londonlion on Nov 17, 2009 7:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes we definitely need another saftey to help Delmas that's for sure.

And I will be pissed too if we don’t get one in this draft. There are many that can come in and make and impact right away and I really hope we get one by the 4th round. My thing is so many people are all about picking Berry #1 because that’s all Kiper and the media talk about when it comes to that position. According to Kiper he would be the #1 pick in any draft other than the one that Stafford was in. It’s just not a position we need to use a first round pick on and I was basically talking to the people that won’t give up on the idea of taking Berry with our first round pick.

We will have a top 3 pick and I believe the best way to go is Okung then best DT or Suh then best Guard or LT. In that Vikings game I realized that the most pressure on Stafford was coming up the middle and he was getting KILLED by the blitzes up the middle. Everytime they came from the middle he was getting hit before he even finished his drop. I honestly think we need to upgrade the guard positions more than any other of the O-line positions. I mean Backus has been beat sometimes this year but not nearly as much as the middle of the O-line has.

by toled0lions on Nov 17, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sadly....

There are too many holes on the offensive line to fix in one draft. It will be bad next year too, barring some miracle trades or FA pickups that make a huge difference. I agree with you here again TL…..If not Okung, then Suh, followed by the opposite with the next pick. I would be happy to see the Lions draft a LT and a DT with their first 2 picks, and then get a safety or corner in the 3rd (BPA based on need), and a safety or a corner in the 4th (the opposite of what they took in the 3rd). I do believe we could get a decent guard in the 5th or 6th round too. I also think we will need a WR later in the draft. It’s hard to say how it will play out.

by KDawg on Nov 17, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Guards that fit our style should be available late

For example, last year, Duke Robinson and Herman Johnson were taken in the 5th Round (with the apparent intent of converting them to RT. The guards drafted by round were:
1st Round: 0
2nd Round: 2
3rd Round: 1
4th Round: 3
5th Round: (Robinson & Johnson)
6th Round 1
7th Round: 0

At least half of those guards were smaller guards that would seem to be a better fit in a zone-blocking scheme, which we no longer do.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Nov 18, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yea I think if we go DT first round then we should go best LT in the 2nd

There are always guards later in the draft they just aren’t a position teams use high picks on unless they are a can’t miss. I forget who said it but there are good LT’s we can get in the second like Ciron Black, Jason Fox, Kyle Calloway, and Selvish Capers. We just have to see how everything plays out and wait for the evaluation on all these players to see where they stack up.

It would be amazing if we could get Okung then somehow have Cody fall into our laps. I also think at some point we need to go after a pass rushing DE to get more pressure on the QB. But if we got Cody that would go along way because he would have to be double teamed freeing up other players.
