Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

Hypothetical Scenario

try this out...

Star-divide

So its another gloomy sunday, another Lions loss. The beer is flowing nice, just a little too nice, youre out. Tired of dodging the old ladys question of "did you wanna watch 3 hours of Greys anatomy I have on the DVR?", you decide to head to the bar. Trot down to your favorite snooze and booze, grab a seat at the bar and notice Mayhew and Schwartz in the corner booth, crying into a couple of warm beers. Feeling the brown bottle confidence, you stagger over and try to console them...

"We are lost, dont know where to start" says Mayhew.

"I dont teach that kind of football" Schwartz crys, sounding a little too Nicholson/Bobby Ross.

"I can help" you say with a belch.

"Please do! Anything" Mayhew begs.

"Pound the rock, sharp shovel, pad level..." a drooling Schwartz

But Mayhew has some stipulations, first off:

1 a-No trade/No Cut: Stafford, C. Johnson, Backus(Sorry, Mr. Ford said so.) Cherilus and Raiola(re-signed).

b-Defense- White, Avril, Mcbride, Hill, ALL LB(Foote re-signs), Delmas, Henry(another Ford tough pick) and Buchanon.

2.Here is a list off NFL free agents, only 2 mid-top tier contracts allowed.Free Agents

3.Here is a list of College draft choices, picking 3rd,(keep the picks within reason, no crazy "reaching" unless your  picking a 6th Rd in the 3rd Rd like the Lions would do)Draft picks

With a pen in hand and napkin to write on Mayhew says "Gimme a starting roster and one/two depth guys"

"I was going with the wind..."

Wow

I am not going to try and figure out a mock draft for this, but this is what I see:
Free Agents:
We make a play for a Guard and a Corner. Depending on who gets resigned, I think those have the deepest talent pools in FA for our needs. There is a chance that there will be some good DTs out there due to money issues (I don’t see GB and the Skins keeping all their DTs so they will probably let some good ones go), but if I had to choose 2 FAs, they will be Guard and Corner.

I do think we will grab more than 2 FAs, so I expect our remaining slots to be filled with some WRs, DBs, etc. that will be backups and practice squaders.

Draft:
I know the safety form UT is high on the boards right now. If he really can switch to CB, then I say use our 1st on him. If not, there are two or three Dlinemen that are blowing up right now, like that guy in Alabama. For the sake of argument, I am going to say that a safety is a safety.
rd1: DT (Cody or Suh)
rd2: DB (to learn nickle and push the starters)
rd3: OG
rd4: DE
rd5: DB/S
rd6: OG/T
rd7: Special Teams (another follet at whatever position)

PS

I am expecting that the FA OG and CB will be older, so that is why I would like to draft the same positions in rd2 and 3. We are starting about 4-6 rookies a week this year and I would like to try and reduce that number rather than keep it steady.

Here goes

Doesn’t really matter you need BPA again in 2010 and maybe 2011. When you have one player from 02’-06’ (who sucks BTW) you are nowhere close.

QB- Stafford, Stanton, Martin – I think Jaime Martin is on the scout team waiting for next year. He was Linehan’s best QB in STL. That means very little but he knows the system, its Stafford’s show anyways and Stanton is still under contract.

RB- Leon Washington(FA), Smith, Morris, Felton, LaGarrette Blount (Rd.7) Kevin Smith frustrates the hell out of me. He is just not good enough to be an everydown back. His reads are too slow, too often hits the line flat-footed, and cannot get to the 2nd level. He should be in a platoon. Washington would provide loads of options and be the defacto lead back with Morris and Smith plugging in and try to get Blount as a short yardage option. I do not like carrying two fullbacks would rather have an H-Back type of tight end.

WR- Johnson, Johnson, Williams, Northcutt, WR 5 – These guys are under contract except Northcutt who I would extend. Get another guy out of camp to round out the group.

TE- Pettigrew, Heller, Gronko – This group has done all right. C Fitz’s deal is up I believe, I see no reason to sign him. Bring up Gronko instead.

Tackle – Okung(Rd. 1), Cherilus, Backus, Loper, Damien Cook – If its a top 3 pick you can’t pay Berry that much. Left Tackle is the best use of that huge contract. With 10’ uncapped, just cut Backus in 11’ and try him at guard for a while. Jansen and Salaam are done, they just don’t want to admit it. Cook was a good reserve lineman last year, I’d keep him.

Guard/Center – Raiola, Peterman, Mike Johnson(Rd. 3), Gandy – Sorry but Dom is here for a while, as is Peterman. Mike Johnson is a good lineman for Alabama and would plug either guard spot or even right tackle if Cherilus confirms bust.

Defensive Ends – Aaron Kampman(FA) , Devries, Hunter, Avril, White – Kampman would be my other FA target. It would leave a nice rotation. Hunter IMO has earned a chance to return next year, a healthy Devries would help too. Avril is under contract but hopes are dimming. I would certainly not go to a 3-4 on his behalf.

Defensive Tackles – Hill, Jackson, Fluellen, Al Woods(Rd. 6) Cohen seems like a camp player only. Hill is a nice surprise and Al Woods is a giant, who Schwartz seems to be looking for at D-Tackle.

LB’s – Peterson, Levy, Foote, Follett, Spencer, Dizon – Sims is a problem, just not smart enough to play in the NFL. Peterson can stick around another year thanks to the uncapped season. Foote will have to do in the middle, there are bigger holes to fill.

Safeties – Delmas, Simpson, Manuel, Henry – Move Henry to safety in the off season, either that or hope Bullocks can get healthy which I think is a long shot. I would take Berry if he was available but not in the top 5 picks, it would be too expensive and either he or Delmas would have to go a few years later.

Corners – Donovan Warren (Rd.2), Buchanon, Jack Williams, Will James, King, Walter Thurmond(Rd.4) – Take some stabs here cause it can’t be any worse. Jack Williams had some upside, maybe it works out.

The offense would get a boost from Washington, he is a proven threat and would give teams fits. Okung and Johnson would be a foundation to fortifying the line. All that would be left is to extend CJ and find the right spare parts to fill out the line and backup spots.

Defensively it almost doesn’t matter what you do next year. There is not enough picks to make any difference, especially when you consider that it takes a whole year to get the hang of it. I think the best value could come at the corner slots. Getting Kampman would solve some pass rush issues. All tolled you would still need a solid draft in 2011 to get close to enough talent.

nice detail, Russ

So your draft looks like this

1. Russell Okung, OT
2. Donovan Warren, CB
3. Mike Johnson, OG
4. Walter Thurmond, CB
5a.
5b.
6. Al Woods, DT
7. LaGarrette Blount, RB

not bad

For this scenario yes

But keep in mind I used my monopoly money on Leon Washington and Aaron Kampman in free agency. Basically I used his rules and picked 2 reasonable free agents and the first overall and filled in from there. I don’t have a real mock at this time and honestly would back the idea of taking the best player available at any position(except QB and WR/TE in round 1). I hate the idea of mocking this early because the bowl games and Senior Bowl probably effect draft status more than anything else. Honestly my first three picks could all be 1st rounders if they have good combines and what not. As far as the Blount pick, a guy with his problems could drop that far but the bigger point is how bad our power game is and a possible solution. As for the third overall pick, it has to come down to positional value because of the contract value. I think Berry is the best player in the draft but you just can’t pay a safety top three money. It’s either one of the DT’s or Okung there. I would love for the Lions to somehow fall into that 5-8 range, they would either get a nice player at a more reasonable price or trade down for more picks in 2010 or 2011.

As far as that free agent list goes

Biggest acquisitions I’d like to see (barring resignings) – Logan Mankins and resigning Leigh Bodden.

Mike Johnson

6’5", 303 (also seen him listed at 6-6, 310)…..has room to add bulk, great upper body strength, big hands, smart, good run blocker, and Saban doesn’t do zone blocking. Has also played at both Tackle spots. Not agile enough to be a zone blocker, but we don’t zone block anymore. Looks like a good fit for our current downhill blocking scheme. Won’t get pushed around. SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week for Week 11, due to his run blocking, and with no QB sacks or pressures allowed and no penalties.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
