How Frustrating!

I’m not trying to knock your post…I’m sure there is a large interest in discussing the draft…even if it is several months away still.
My problem lies with the fact that this is just such a routine. Here we are less than 10 games in to the season and I’m reading one draft comment after another all over POD. I’m not suprised that the Lions are off to another abysmal start (although I am dissapointed), but I’m disgusted with the fact that they’re not even giving us enough to talk about without bringing up players that have probably just gotten done with mid-term exams…IN THE FIRST SEMESTER!!!
I know the majority of this site is reviewed by football/Lions junkies…but this has just gotten out of hand. I am personally boycotting draft talk until there are actually no more games to discuss. Let me know four months from now who I should be pissed we passed up on!

I can see what your saying

We still have 7 games left….we’ll have plenty of time to talk about the draft in the coming months.

I was looking at the standings

If we lose to Cleveland Sunday (not happening) we will almost lock up the 1st or 2nd pick in the draft. Which, it kills me to say would help this team. Kill our cap? Maybe but guaranteeing Suh or Okung would be nice. Just hurts to say it.

I don't agree with this kill the cap theory

The Rams have had the #2 pick two years in a row and are headed for a top five pick again. Maybe some people see that as proof that they are having problems managing their cap, but I don’t see it. I see the early picks as an opportunity to get exactly what you need, without worrying about your guy getting picked before you get a chance.

Getting Suh to lead our D line for the next half dozen years sounds pretty good to me.

o line

is our biggest need, we have to take Russell Okung with our first pick. If our offensive unit could keep the damn ball a little longer, our defense wouldnt look so bad. Dont get me wrong, we need help on the D line too. But i have 74 million reasons to protect. and to be honest it wouldnt hurt me one bit to see us take another lineman in the second round. Perferably the biggest guy availble. Sam Young 6’ 7" 330 lbs. could play right tackle and move Godser Cherilus to guard or vise versa. I guess my point is we need to get younger guys for our qb, guys that will grow with him and have mutual respect for one another. The chemistry could be very rewarding for us lions fans. I am a lions fan that lives on the wisconsin and illinois state line, nothing would make me happier than a dominate lions team in the next couple years, NOTHING!!! just ask my wife, lol

I agree

And your point brings up something that I was thinking about this weekend. Is it my imagination or did Schwartz say at one point that he wanted to be a power run team, yadayada, etc.? I seem to remember him saying that. But as I watched Stafford get hammered it hit me. You don’t pay a QB $74,000,000 and then have a power run game. You pay a QB $74,000,000 to throw the ball. Like with Manning and the Colts. I can’t think of a team that had a QB paid like this that wasn’t paid to wing it.

Any thoughts?

by WBL on Nov 16, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

Good point

The Colts and Pats don’t have power run games and even the Steelers don’t look like a power running team anymore. It’s difficult to have a premier QB and a power running game……..they both seem to cancel each other out

Run game

I am not sure if we need a Power run game, but we do need a run game. It opens up so many more options for Stafford. One of the reasons Favre was able to light us up for big plays was that we had to respect the play action when he would fake to Peterson. If our run game is at least viable, then they have to respect that and it will open up our receivers.

by Lions-fan-SLC on Nov 17, 2009 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

I agree again

100% in fact. A running game is needed. It just struck me that the type of offense that Schwartz said that he wanted to run (a power running/ ball control offense) went out the window the moment we drafted Stafford because you don’t pay a QB that much and not throw it. I guess I was just thinking that it seems like the Lions can’t seem to pick an identity and then stay with it. They can’t pick a personality. I’,m not sure what that means in the long run. It was more of an observation. I guess we’ll see what happens.

by WBL on Nov 17, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

They don't give Smith the ball enough.

He is getting into a rhythm right now and we need to feed him the ball more. Against the Seahawks he averaged 5.2 yards per carry and against the Viqueens he averaged 4.6 yards per carry. But in the Seahawks game he only got the ball 13 times and the Viqueens game he only got it 12 times. He has had some really good games this year but the fact is he has only gotten 20 or more carries twice this year. I know he’s had a shoulder problem but when he plays the whole game they give up on the run too quick. And even with the limited carries and the horrible O-line he still has 515 yards through 9 games which if you think about it is actually pretty good on this team.

I agree

Putting it all into perspective makes a big difference.

by KDawg on Nov 18, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Draft o-line for 3 reasons.

1. Keep Stafford on his feet instead of his backside. (Sure he would appreciate that.)
2. Improve a non existent running game.
3. Both 1 and 2 would make it easier for Staff to wing the ball around the field.

I am sold on drafting o-line early and often, but we also need to address the secondary either via the draft or FA.

by Lead Hunter on Nov 17, 2009 6:39 PM EST reply actions

see i agree that we need a new LT that why i have fox in 2nd round

i think he will be better then Russell Okung.. with how much talent there is at d-line it will be hard to pass them up

Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??

by det32 on Nov 17, 2009 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure if Fox will be better than Okung but.....

he is a hell of a better value being picked 35th as opposed to Okung at #3. There will be some very good LT prospects available early in the second round. Use the first round pick on a D lineman like Suh or McCoy.

I totally agree with this strategy det32.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 18, 2009 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

I would be fine with that too.....

As long as we get Suh and not McCoy…..

+100

Backus needs to be gone or moved to guard. Okung would be a great pick-up in the draft, concentrating on secondary and d-line with most of the rest.

I’m just hoping to see another win or two before the season ends. And here I thought the Lions would win 6 games this year….

Lol

They moved the Browns to the 5th pick in the in-depth story on it and forgot to do that on the table.

LOL. Oh yea I just looked at the table.

I was gonna say why in the world would they have us taking Bradford.

by toled0lions on Nov 18, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

russel okung

lions need to get younger on the o-line and MUST get rid of backus at LT next year. russel okung should be there at number 2. thats where i think we r heading. take him to protect stafford or he will get killed!! i still think murtha would have been worth a shot at LT the last 8 games of the year b4 miami took him. what do u have to lose with this team??

by pedro_25 on Nov 18, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions

I want to see us take Okung first.

Then I would love to see us get Cody or Dan Williams from Tennessee. A big DT to take up double teams and just plug the middle with S. Hill. Hill is already fast becoming a beast and with another big strong player next to him that would free up the DE’s and the blitz.

I think as long as we pick in the top 5 we will get Okung unless the bucs are ahead of us and take him. If you look at it the Browns have Thomas, the Rams drafted Smith last year, the Chiefs drafted Branden Albert in the first round 2 years ago. The only 2 teams that could be ahead of us that would take a LT are the Bucs and the Raiders. And I just don’t see the Raiders doing that because they signed Kalif Barnes in the offseason. I think Okung is ours for the taking if they want him.

by toled0lions on Nov 18, 2009 2:51 PM EST reply actions

Defense! Defense! Defense!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the idea of taking Okung first, but I’d love to see us take Berry. It would be an immediate improvement to our lackluster pass defense and Eric Berry is just a freak athlete. At this point I see us drafting #1 or #2 and if it’s the #1 overall slot a tackle either defensively or offensively is most likely to be the case.

by rmatheny on Nov 18, 2009 5:45 PM EST reply actions

Berry isn't worth a top 5 pick and he isn't a freak.

Mays is a freak of an athlete. As big as Calvin and runs a sub 4.3. And he isn’t even worth a top 5. Do you know how many great safeties are gonna be in this draft? I see so many Tennessee games and I see Berry getting beat way too much to be worth a top 5 pick. We can get a safety just as good in the 3rd round.

by toled0lions on Nov 18, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

On the money

Mays is bigger and faster…..Eric Berry is over rated.

OG Thomas Austin, Clemson, 6-3 315

Good leader, refuses to quit, strong (with room to add more bulk), quick feet,…..and he can also play Center. Interesting family history. Can quote Stonewall Jackson.
