This is it!!! Formula for Lions Success

Ok, after another numbing loss and pondering another 3 years before we switch coaches and get a new qb a glimmer of hope entered my mind.  While this is a long shot for sure, I think if the right people were involved we could actually make it work.

What's the one thing that detroit really has going for us - and don't say stafford or calvin, really any player for that matter cause they all blow!  Its our stadium - we actually have one of the best stadiums in the league.  I'd even take it over the cowboys mini roman empire.  So my thought is, we should use this stadium to our advantage (again, since it is the only thing worth salvaging on this horrible horrible team - sorry i'm really pissed).

You may have heard that LA got a new stadium approved to be built, but as of now, no takers.  I say we jump on this opportunity to ship this sorry ass bunch of pathetic loser players (i could field a better team at my local 24hr gym) to LA - yup the LA Lions (even sounds good).  Now with the trash finally out of town we entice a new team to come to Dtown.  I prefer the vikings - would even be a short trip for em.  Actually, there isn't a team in this league that i wouldn't trade places with.  This includes all the bottom dwellers - id take oakland, the browns, the chiefs - any team over the sorry ass team we have.  They have no heart.  All they offer is a 50cent hallmark responses to repeated losses.  calvin johnson is OVERRATED.  I don't care what you say - he is overrated.  How pathetic have we become - Stafford runs for a meanless gain and gets whacked and the city is ready to throw him a parade.  Give me a break.  this is joke,  its football and if there is anything this team has demonstrated, is they have no clue how to play it.

Ship this F'ng team out of here.  Ahh, i feel better now and can go about my monday.

Nope, very bad idea

If they ship out, it will be AT LEAST 10 yrs before the remote possibility of another NFL team comes to town

by JazzyBBP on Nov 16, 2009 12:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps longer than that.

The only thing this franchise has going for it is that it is an existing franchise! No chance the NFL would bring a new franchise in to one of the worst economies in the entire country. Let alone a franchise that probably won’t sell out the only Nationally Televised game they get every year. Fanbase is dwindling, the City and State are on Life Support…the Lions leave now and it would be a miracle to ever get a team back here.
Interesting thought though….how many would follow the Lions if they did move to LA. I can promise you that it would spell the end for me.

calvin johnson is OVERRATED

Yeah, how else do you explain a WR who catches 12 touchdowns on a winless team, playing with 5 different quarterbacks?

Maybe Kitna/Orlovsky/Culpepper/Stanton/Henson made CJ look good, like Brady does with Randy Moss.

by n4ry4 on Nov 16, 2009 12:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The Lions are going no where.

This is an one of the original franchises in the NFL and one of the most football crazed cities/states in the country. Why would you want to move from that, to a city that cares so little that multiple teams have left.

Why do you watch? If it is so brutal that you need to come on here to tell us the reasons they should leave town then why do you put yourself through it? I personally saw yesterdays game as a positive. That team is 8-1 and has beaten teams a lot more convincingly than they beat us. WE WENT 0-16. Is this supposed to be a 1 year process. Stafford was a man yesterday and offensively this team is a couple of lineman away from being pretty good. Defensively is another story, however with another high draft pick we can take a guy to help the D-Line.

I can’t believe that RichRod went 3-9 at Michigan and people are more patient with him than they are with Schwartz/Mayhew. Mayhew has given us the best draft we have had in at least 8 years, 2 of our 4 best players on offense came from this draft and our single best defensive player(who did not play yesterday) came from this draft. Give them time, this coach is not going to fail.

Not that this is a good post but...

I have actually thought of the lions mocing to LA there are positives but there are also significant negatives. The team would have a much improved base and a substanial increase in discretionary income. That being said detroit will be decimated. We would be removing the last economic staple in metropolitan detroit and that i believe far outweighs any potential upgrade as a fan. I am a human first, detroit lions fan second.

Gross

I’m with you (as a human) but at some point this economy CANNOT sustain 4 professional sports teams. Look at other rust belt cities (besides PITT which has reinvented itself quite nicely) NONE of them support 4 professional sports teams (Cincinatti, Cleveland, St. Louis, etc.) it’s just not economically feasible. At some point DET will lose one of their franchises. It may not happen in a year or two but eventually one team will have to leave

I disagree -- The Detroit area can support 4 teams

The Detroit Metro area (including suburbs, and nearby cities, Flint, Ann Arbor, etc) is the 11th largest metro area in the USA by population.

“#12 Phoenix supports 4 teams (Cards, Suns, Diamondbacks, Coyotes)
“#13 San Francisco-Oakland supports two NFL teams , two MLB teams, one NHL and one NBA team.

Metro Detroit is a lot bigger than Cleveland, Cincinnati, St Louis, etc.

by n4ry4 on Nov 16, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes n4ry4

but what are the current and anticipated unemployment rates for Metro Detroit and its surrounding area’s. Recall in ECON it’s not current inflation, unemployment, GDP, etc. but anticipated that everyone looks at.

my arguement is that

You are not only losing a sports team you are losing direct capitol pumped into the local economy through the Ford Motor Company. It would be interesting to see if Ford can survive the loss of sponsorship and advertising dollars. As shitty as the lions are i would not be surprised if 30 second commercial spots still go for 100k even if that cash is going to media affiliates, thats all they have left.

Cleveland?

Cleveland did just this…and their economy ain’t much better. I realize its a pipe dream. I’m just really really really down at the moment. Giving up that 17point lead last sunday hurt bad. I liken being a lions fan to the guy whose dating the town tramp – no matter what she does, i just keep coming back for more.

Cleveland...

…I don’t think….had an attendance problem? Also, if we are going to get the Browns back, I’ll keep the Lions thanks.

I posted some weeks ago that

Detroit may not be able to sustain 4 professional sports teams given the state of the auto manufacturing and soaring unemployment in the state. Given that – ship this team out to Los Angeles, get a new person to run the team (sorry WCF your 50+ years of running this team has gotten us NOWHERE) and let’s start rooting for the LA LIONS!!!!

If not, Sean is there a way I can ignore certain Posters? This team leaves Detroit, I am no longer a fan.

Partly sarcastic Leapin' Lion

I will no longer be a fan if my team becomes the LA Lions. In fact, I doubt I will be an NFL fan at all – well at least not a fan of any specific team anyway.

Nonetheless I still don’t think the area (despite n4ry4’s statistics) can support 4 professional sports teams, numerous major college programs etc. with unemployment >13%. It’s not economically viable IMO.

the economy won't stay this way.

And no commish will send a Detroit team sailing, especially the Lions; this franchise has sold out games on a regular basis. If this team was winning there would be no blackouts. PERIOD.

NBA, and Hockey? Too many games being played. Both respective leagues are having attendance issues throughout their entire fan bases. Teams are having fire sales for players with large contracts. Baseball? Penske would buy the Tigers before he would let them leave Michigan. No one is leaving, get over it.

You know people can criticize the Lions all they want, they deserve it. But all this bullshit about teams leaving really gets under my skin. It’s not happening.

Perhaps you're right Leapin'

But I know one thing – here on Wall St. everyone said during last year “Don’t worry, Bear Stearns can’t go under” or “don’t worry, the Gov.’t will never let Lehman Bros. fail” and look what happened.

Money talks bro and if its not there (attendance, advertising, TV revenue) I wouldn’t discount anything.

NOTED: I will revoke my Lions fanhood if this team plays anywhere other than Ford Field in downtown Detroit

I don't understand...

…why people would want the team to leave. I for one would be devastated to the point where I wouldn’t watch the NFL.

by doctorjcmu on Nov 16, 2009 5:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

WOW

Not sure what your expectations were for this team, but obviously they were unrealistic. There is a reason most pundits predicted that this team would win no more than 4 games. I personally thought we would win 3. I did drink a little Kool Aid and said we could win 4-5 at the start of the season.

This team has been mediocre for the past 45-50 years. The ol’man made a critical mistake in hiring “he who must not be named” to elevate the franchise. Problem was, he listened to all the NFL talking heads about how smart “HWMNBN” was. In all reality he is half retarded, and since the ol’ man is too loyal “HWMNBN” plummeted the franchise to the lowest of the lows.

Now we persevere, and stick with this “team”, until we can become mediocre, then elite. But it will take time. And I know we have been told that all along, but that’s how it goes. This was going to be a rough year, coming off of 0-16, starting a rookie QB, poor talent throughout the entire roster. If you thought otherwise your either delusional or don’t know football.

So either get off the wagon, or put your Lions cap back on.

I moved to So Cal 8 years ago...

And I actually bought a LA Lions tee shirt last year, (around week 10). It was from this website, LAtaketheLions.com, I bought it as a joke to deflect all of the humiliation of being a Lions Fan in Southern California.

I don’t wear it this year though, (I liked the logo, kinda a bubbles head on a Ferrari Lion).

Just to state. I am not in favor of this move, I love Detroit and always will. But if they did move to LA I’d still be a Lions fan, provided they keep the Mascot and Colors.

by j16941 on Nov 16, 2009 3:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

the lions

they arent going anywhere. i dont care how bad they are cuz the LA clippers are just as bad and they havent left. and the clippers have the lakers in the same town as them. they clippers are a case that shows that the lions will never leave. and Calvin Johnson is NOT OVERATTED. that is like saying adrain peterson is overatted. u just dont say it cuz it is not true. when/if stafford ever becomes more comfortable and has better chemistry with johnson he will be a pro bowler reciever easily.

Who the hell is this guy

If you don’t like the team then stop watching them and stop coming on here and saying that you want the Lions to move. This is by far the worst post that I have ever read on this site, I would rather read the garbage that rbanner puts on here. At least we know he does not want the lions to move. If you don’t like the team then leave, the same goes to the rest of the people who want this team to move to L.A. I can’t believe that I actually read this crap, what kind of fan are you.

Yes the Author

and anyone else who thinks it is good idea to move the Lions to LA. Ok I know that I probably should have waited a day to post this but I work with a lot of Browns fans and they said they were hating life when the ravens won the super bowl and I would be super pissed if my team left. I am not saying that I am the most hard core fan but in no way do I want my team leaving. I mean I am having hard enough time dealing with the fact that the Tigers want to trade Granderson. So I guess what I am trying to say that my stance on this does not change, I think that any person who wants their team to leave is not that die hard of a fan, again I am not saying that I am the most hrd core fan but moving the Lions should be a last resort option.

It would be a monumental mistake if the Tigers trade Curtis Granderson

He is a shoe in hall of fame player……I will hate Dave Dombrowski for the rest of my life if they trade away “My Tiger”.

CG

I love Curtis Granderson too—DO NOT TRADE. But, he isn’t a shoe-in Hall of Famer. c’mon KDAWG!

by x$pcents IV on Nov 18, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ok....maybe that is stretching it a bit....

But if he continues on the pace that he has been on over his 6 year career, and he plays for a long time, he will end up with impressive career numbers, and he might make the HOF.

I will still hate Dombrowski for the rest of my life if they trade Granderson.

Wouldn't be too broken hearted

Sorry Kdawg, but everytime CG comes to the plate I always get this sinking feeling that it’s a automatic out.

Depending on what DD can get from him would ultimately determine wether I would miss him too much.

After we traded Chauncey last year for money I don’t think there is another player that I could feel distraught over being shipped out of town.

Dawg

the guy hit .249 last year. He struck out 141 times.
From the articles I have seen, the Tigers aren’t shopping him or Jackson.
But HOF? Dawg, he is a .272 lifetime hitter. If he has a few more years like ’07, okay, but…

by rbanner on Nov 19, 2009 5:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I know

But he is very young and talented……Even Yaz (I know you know who I mean banner, but for those who do not, I am referring to Carl Yastrzemski) had seasons where he hit sub .300, and his career BA was only .285. If Granderson plays for 23 years like Yaz did, it is not out of the realm of reason or possibility that he will make the HOF. I see no reason (barring career ending injury) that he will not have a long and lucrative career.

My personal opinion as to why he hit .249 last year is that he was told to hit for power more often, instead of in a leadoff role where his main objective was to get on base. As of right now, he only has 1 season (his rookie year when he only had 25 at bats) when he hit worse for the season than Yaz’s worst season of .246. As a matter of fact, Yaz only hit .300 or better 6 times in his 23 year career, and only more than 30 HRs 3 times. Granderson has 57 triples in 6 seasons to Yaz’s 59 over 23 years! Tell me that he couldn’t possibly break the MLB record for most triples in a season or career! Yaz only hit more than the 38 doubles Grandy hit, in 2007, 4 times in his 23 year career. Yaz only had 155 or more hits (something that Granderson has done for the last 4 years straight) 11 times in his 23 year career.

If you get right down to it, Curtis Granderson is quite comparable to Carl Yastrzemski…..and if Yaz is a HOFer, why couldn’t Grandy be? I would say Granderson has a pretty good chance at equaling, or even surpassing, Yaz’s numbers.

Good response. CG already has his name in the history books.

And on the right pages may I add. In this day and age!

by j16941 on Nov 20, 2009 8:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

First

Yaz never struck out over 100 times in a season. CG has done it each and every year he was a full-time player.
Next, Yaz finished with 3400+ hits.
Now if CG sticks around that long and boosts his average those 15 pts., fine, but he does not even has his first 1000 yet.
Next , the averages in Yaz’s day were generally lower than today. Yaz won a batting title with a .301 average. That was the lowest in the modern era.
Yaz had 3 seasons of 40 or more HRs. Yaz had 1800+ RBI.
Sorry, but CG is not on pace to equal of surpass Yaz’s hits or RBI, even though he plays in a much hitter friendly era.
Not that I want CG to go, though I would welcome less SOs and more BBs!

OK, now a few people out there must remember...

One of the countless times that the following sentiment was expressed over the last 50 years:

“Lions fans must stop supporting this team. If ownership has no incentive to bring a winner to Detroit, then ownership never will.”

The area will support 4 teams whether they can afford to or not. The blackouts are due to the poor product on the field, not the economy.
