Stafford Is It
Yesterday's game against the Vikings proved to me that Stafford has what it takes to not only be a starting QB in the NFL, but a damn good one. Enlighten me if you will, but I can't remember the last time a quarterback played so well with his offensive line virtually non-existent. On that same note, I can't remember the last time and offensive line played that bad. But Stafford hung in there, made some good throws and played tough. He was on the ground 70% of the game. I think if the Lions put some talent on that o-line, and maybe get Stafford one more WR that won't drop six passes a game, he could be something special. That throw he made to Bryant Johnson in the endzone should've been a TD. Stafford was running to his left full speed, threw across his body and hit Johnson right where that ball needed to be. It was his best throw so far this season in my opinion, right up there with the one against Washington on 3rd and long to seal the game.
Even with all our losses, Mathew Stafford proves to me each game that he has what it takes. I'm excited to see what he can do with one more year of drafting/free agent moves, and one more year of him gathering a better understanding of the NFL game.

I'd like to believe it giggy
but its a little hard right now to see anything but defeat for this team. I liked what I saw from Staff yesterday – but hated last week. Who knows which one he will be more like over the long-term??
I praise his toughness but David Carr was tough too. Ah hell its all a crap shoot anyway.

I see defeat too
But from the team, not Stafford. I actually liked what I saw from him last week against Seattle. But again, the team itself sucked. I also agree with you on the David Carr reference. He’s tough and smart but took a huge lickin’ during his time in Houston and now has happy feet in the pocket. always looking over his shoulder. I think he’s actually a great comparison to what Stafford could be like if the Lions don’t get talent around him fast.
+1
Good call………….I agree with you giggy. The Texans never did enough to help Carr. I hope we don’t make the same mistake because, like you, I think Staff can be a good NFL QB. He certainly has the intangibles and the arm strength!

as proud of him as i am for hanging in there right threw to the last throw...
as proud of him as i am for picking calvin up mentally…i am that much more disappointed in the rest of the team for not giving the kid a pat on the back, at the very least not putting his pad back under his jersey. i can only hope that they were embarassed and couldn’t face him…i think unlikely…but its what is keeping my belief in this team going. you could see the defeat in his eyes. that game single handedly switched my view of our draft needs around…i have flipped, as i am sure i will a couple more times before the draft, we need olineman. outclassed doesn’t even begin to describe that mismatch. sigh.
I noticed that too
The pad thing. I thought it was a pretty good sign of the type of players we have on the rest of the team.
Awesome Topic....
….And I agree 1000% with you.

Huge Difference
They are not even close. David Carr came out of no where. Stafford has been around forever. Hell, Kiper said he would be the first pick in the draft when he was in high school. Carr played in the WAC before it became semi-credible. Stafford has been getting bashed around in the SEC, his line last year at UGA was terrible.
It seemed that Stafford got more swagger as he got hit more. I remember a certain QB from the South that had that same type of mentality. If you hit Favre he would light you up. He will be a stud when he gets a line.
So how does the fact that Stafford got more media coverage than Carr have anything to do with how they both handle the game after being knocked on their backs? I’m confused maybe I misinterpreted your comment. But just because people knew who Stafford was before Carr was at their respective points in their playing careers doesn’t really have anything to do with their skill sets.
As to your other point, I agree. It seemed every time Stafford got knocked down, it lit a fire under him and he was more determined to make up for it the next play. Very Favre-esque. I like it.
Flash in the Pan
These guys happen all the time. They have one or two good years against questionable competition and get drafted too high. Carr, Alex Smith, Joey, Akili Smith, (I don’t think the Pac-10 was very good then) Andre Ware, etc.
Stafford has been around forever and has had to deal with pressure. He has met every challenge. He was supposed to be good in high school. He was. He was supposed to be good at Georgia. He started as a Freshman, dealt with the pressure of facing NFL caliber talent every week, and played good. He is supposed to be good in the pros and he will be.
I hope so
I’ll settle for another Gary Danielson or Eric Hipple at this point

If he doesn't...
…play baseball he is a Top 5 pick and had the chance to be an absolute stud. I still think he was the best combination of athlete and quarterback I have ever seen. He could move around in the pocket and make any throw. He just took the easy money that baseball offered.
I'm gonna go ahead and agree with you on this one.
He was overrated and would’ve been a bust, baseball or not.
Ugh I don't even want to think about it
He could have won a Heisman and Michigan could have won a NC if he came back for one more year.

It won’t be surprising that Henson was lured away after seeing that.

right up until the last two plays
nothing fazed him, he didn’t let anything get to HIS offense, he picked himself & them right back up. his leadership is something to take note of. that is something i never saw in carr…but i must say, his team at least helped him off the ground.
I'm just sick of this team

I hear the frustration, but hang in there, bud. They weren’t going to be THAT good this year anyway. The team had too many new players and coaches for it to be cohesive all at once. I knew that from the get-go.
BUT, I do agree that it’s no less frustrating to watch them lose just because of those reasons.
Hang in there, man. They will come around. Schwartz went through bad seasons in Tennessee and they turned it around.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
Stafford definitely the man
I’m feelin’ this kid. He’s got something special…….we just have to surround him with something better than a paper wall.

hang in there
I thought we played pretty good for 3 quarters against the vikings. Stafford played well against a tuff defense. I see the light at the end of the long tunnell. It is going to take time to fix this trainwreck.
I think Staff hit back quite well from his rather poor game against the Hawks
He made plays and stayed tough…but most critically, he didn’t make mistakes. That’s huge for a guy who was getting hit all the time…

+1 Hyper
That is right – he did bounce back after that awful performance in Seattle. I also though Linny called a pretty conservative game to help build Staff’s confidence.
It all comes down to W’s though and if we lose to the Browns I really don’t know what else there is to do other than preach patience.

The Browns game is of huge importance
I’m afraid that if we lose, things could get a whole lot worse here. A win would pick us all up a touch and remind us that we are not the worst team in the league.

Totally agree with the OP
Stafford has shown nothing but poise and determination this year, and that IS saying alot.
The kid was laughing and smiling near the end of the Vikings game, and though I’m sure plenty of people will say that’s not how he should have been reacting to losing, what it showed to me is that getting hit 40 times (literally!) in one game didn’t really faze him.
He doesn’t complain, he doesn’t make excuses…. With experience, he will only make his teammates better. And that, to me, is the mark of a true ‘franchise quarterback’ or whatever you want to call it. I heard it the other day about Cutler, and it’s so true. Matthew Stafford will make this team better than it’d be with Jon Kitna, Daunte Culpepper, or Jay Cutler. And that to me makes him worth it. I’m not worried about Joey Harrington or David Carr syndrome. As its been said already, he’s been dealing with this since forever. His attitude is 100x that of Harrington, and I don’t know if you can even say David Carr’s talent was ever in the same league as Staff.
Did anyone else notice that near the END of the game, when he was obviously the most exhausted and beaten, is when he started scrambling for yards and trying to make plays? I blew off all his comments about wanting to come here and make us a contender before the draft as money talk, but shit… He puts himself on the line for us more than any other player, as he should.
Sorry I made this so long, I just see so many dark spots on this team, and everyone is so frustrated, so I feel compelled to share my perspective on one extremely bright spot (aside from the coaching staff, who I also think are great).
I just reread
I heard it the other day about Cutler, and it’s so true.
Read as: I heard that the other day about Cutler NOT doing that for his teammates. A good QB improves his teammates, and Cutler is not capable of elevating their level of play.
You are dead on. I said last week that the kid...
would bounce back and the bad game in Seattle wouldn’t get in his head.
I watched every game he played in college and I can tell you that in every game, he made 2 or 3 throws that no other QB in college football at that time could make.
Build the D line and shore up the O-line in the off-season, and the Lions could be flirting with a .500 season next year, and the playoffs in the next.
Awfullly optimistic Dawg
but if your in SEC country you saw some hi quality football. I’ll take your word for it but playoffs next year?? Our entire secondary would have to be reworked to even come close to that
I spray paint my dog Honolulu Blue and Silver
Pic - me vs. Bears fans
I think playoffs are doable...
….though I will admit that I would be surprised. However, I would hope to see significant improvement next year. If we go, say 2-14 or 3-13 this year….I’d like to see us at least 6-10 or 7-9 next year. That, to me, would be positive and realistic. Playoffs should never be ruled out though.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
Right on Twon
When we finish this year 2-14 I would KILL for next year’s squad to go 7 – 9. that would be real improvement. I think we’re gonna get there, if only because Millen is back in the booth (oddly enough commenting on how to build a franchise!!!)
I spray paint my dog Honolulu Blue and Silver
Pic - me vs. Bears fans
I find it hard to believe
that he can even say the words build a franchise in any commentary after leaving his finger prints all over an 0-16 team. What a jackoff.
I don't know if we could manage a 7-9 next year
Unless we have a great offseason and a couple of players we have right now really hit their stride, I don’t think we’d hit 7-9 (wouldn’t rule it out though). 5-11 seems more likely. The NFL changes rapidly though, you never know.

You mis-read, I said flirting with .500 next year...
and the playoffs the year after, as in 2011. Very doable. The Bears are on a downhill slide and the Cutler trade was idiotic IMO. He’s very over-rated at this point. The Packers are going to get mired in mediocrity, playing well enough to flirt with the playoffs, but never quite closing the deal. The Vikings will remain a force to be reckoned with (Favre or no Favre), but that still leaves a door open for the Lions to get a wildcard birth in 2011 with 9-10 wins (9 is pushing it, but 10 gives them a good shot).
I have seen enough this year to feel good about the coaching staff in place, now they just need players in the interior. A monster DT and a nasty DE can pay HUGE dividends. Add a safety to compliment Delmas and go for the best corner you can find and you can have a significantly better defense NEXT YEAR and still have room to add some players on the O-line.
It’s like truama care: 1) stop the bleeding on D, 2) stabalize the vital functions by protecting the QB, 3) build the patient’s strength with depth on the roster.

3rd wide reciever
maybe if matt millen was SMART we wouldnt be looking for more wide receivers. instead of drafting devale ellis we shouldnt have taken marques colston from the SAME school. how nice would that be 6’5 wr on each side with BJ in the slot and grew and TE? i agree though if this coaching staff drafts properly and gets an o-line around stafford he will be a good QB. just hope stafford learns to throw the deep ball better.
Staff's a competitor
I like it. He’s learning and developing, but without that inner fire, a QB can’t succeed in the NFL. Stafford’s got that fire. That, perhaps more than anything, makes me confident that he’s on his way to being the QB we’ve been seeking for the last 50 years.
Mike O’Hara compared Staff to QB flops since 1998. Here’s the link.
http://www.detnews.com/article/20091116/OPINION03/911160398/1126/rss14/How-Stafford-rates-against-NFL-flops
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
I have never before seen an article
that questioned David Carr’s arm. O’Hara has got to be kidding. I have never seen a stronger arm in the NFL than Carr’s. Carr may have other faults, but questioning his arm compared to anybody is simply ridiculous.
Never?
1. Jim Hart (still holds the record for the longest completion in the air, 98 yards)
2. Bert Jones (at his prime could easily throw the ball over 100 yards)
3. Doug Williams
4. John Elway
5. Jack Kemp
Just to name the top 5 in no particular order…….
I remember Randall Cunningham throwin the ball 91 yards in the air in a QB competition…..
Dan Marino could throw the ball 90 yards in the air……
The list goes on and on.
O’Hara never said that David Carr did not possess adequate arm strength. In fact, nobody ever did question that (like you said). O’Hara is saying that Stafford possesses arm strength that is superior to David Carr’s….and that arm strength, coupled with his pocket management ability, makes him a far superior QB to Carr (and Leaf, and Alex Smith, and JaMarcus Russell).
Even Michael Bishop had a stronger arm than Carr
Not much else (other than fast legs),……….but he did have a stronger arm.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
And your point is?
Spare me the nonsense:

it’s a 7 month old article like yours is
That Carr's arm
is as good as any one’s?!?
I have no idea what you wanted me to glean from that article.
Refer back to KDawg's comment above (11-18, 830 PM EST)
KDawg makes excellent points. You’ve NEVER seen a stronger arm in the NFL than Carr’s??? Reread KDawg’s comment.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
Reread KDawg's comment
Those guys didn’t have stronger arms than Carr? Are you serious?
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
Which has what to do with your link?
First of all, Dawg has Hart’s info wrong. The throw he refers to was intercepted.
Not that that has anything to do with anything.
Carr throws a rope as good as anyone I have ever seen. Russell has a very strong arm, as well. I rather doubt either of them is inferior to Stafford. If there is a difference, it is negligible.
O’Hara’s article mentions “arm”. If not arm strength, what is the reference?
So I still have no idea what an article that does not even mention Carr’s name has to do with his arm strength?
Oh really.....
There have been longer passes…….but not one that went that distance in the air……
Jim Hart (to Moore), St. Louis vs. Los Angeles, Dec. 10, 1972 (no TD).
Completed……..not intercepted.
The point is this……David Carr has a strong arm.. Nobody is arguing that. However, he does not have the strongest arm EVER in the NFL……not by a long shot. You saying that you have never seen a person with a stronger arm than David Carr is absolutely hilarious. Give up your pathetic argument……Stafford is FAR superior to David Carr in every way, shape, and form.
I HOPE YOU STILL COMMENT HERE IN TWO YEARS!!!!!!!
in little kid voice "i rather doubt either of them ( carr or russell? WTF!) is INFERIOR to Stafford!!!!!
Dude, You suck @life. Go Away… What Misogynistic desire do you have to disagree with LOGIC, and everyone (most of us) here?
Moore?
I don’t see anyone named Moore on the ‘72 Cardinals.
Not that it matters.
Because Hart threw a long ball that day in the air does not mean he had a superior arm to everybody else.
Without placing the players in the same position, who knows the result.
You say Staff is superior in everyway. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t.
I know one way he is not superior. David Carr won the first game he ever played in the NFL!
Very interesting......
I was just going by what they have on NFL.com, but upon further review it had to have been a pass to Ahmad Rashad. I think you are right in that there was no Moore on the 72 Cardinal’s roster.
the pass when to Ahmad Rashad...but still...
You are going to use the " He won the first game he played.." agrument? And he was so impressive the way he out dueled Quincy Carter. 145 yards passing. To Carter’s 131. Wow, you are really out there. You really have some sort of wierd anti-anything Lions’s fetish. And this thing with Stafford…well…it is getting kind of creepy. I am being to believe he did something personal to you. Did he take out your great grand daughter. And call her back? Seriouly, it is just odd.

"David Carr won the first game he ever played in the NFL!"......uh, all by himself?
Maybe those commercials that showed him without an offensive line were true, lol.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
say that David Carr has the strongest in the history of the NFL....
