2006 draft

i just wanna say im not a huge ernie sims fan. he has been a solid linebacker but he's never been a PLAYMAKER. i was just looking back at that 06 draft and was thinking if we had drafted differently. what would the team be like if we had drafted.............

haloti ngata

jay cutler

kamerion wimbley

how much better off would our lilttle lions be and who would u have drafted??

off the subject to matt millen should never broadcast college football games in michigan!!!!!

Who would I have drafted?

Instead of Ernie Sims, I would have drafted Ngata in round 1. Instead of Daniel Bullocks in round 2, how about Roman Harper? If not Harper, then how about Daryn Colledge (starting LG for the Packers, OT out of Boise State), or Marcus McNeill (starting RT for the Chargers, OT out of Auburn)? Instead of Brian Calhoun in round 3, how about Jerious Norwood (or even Owen Daniels, who went with the first pick of round 4)? We had no fourth round pick in 2006, because of a trade with NE. Instead of Jonathon Scott in round 5, why not Dawan Landry (this pick would have allowed us to take McNeill or Colledge in round 2)? Instead of Dee McCann in round 6, why not Johnny Jolly? Instead of Fred Matua and Anthony Cannon in round 7, why not Marques Colston at least?

The problem with all of this is that hind sight is 20-20……it would have taken a true clairvoyant to be able to tell that some of the above mentioned guys would turn into anything better than what we picked. The draft is a huge crap shoot.

At the time I liked DT Ngata and LT Marcus McNeil

I very much wanted the Lions to draft both of them. Can’t have enough big fat linemen.

Some of those others, though, I will admit weren’t on my radar.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

i agree

i like all the picks u came up with. one thing i can say about the draft being a crap shoot is that the lions never find that GEM in the weeds. when was the last time the lions drafted a late round guy and he became a pro bowler?? i cant think of any.

kinda tired

of all the what if talk…its been going on for soo long in this city, and i know it will go on until this team becomes a winner, but i gotta say i dont see a point in revisiting drafts and seeing “who we could’ve had”.

its true, we could’ve drafted ngata, but that wouldnt really make any sense at the time…we had redding and rogers in the middle, and its hard to see how a 3-4 OLB like Wimbley would fit into the Tampa 2 scheme at the time or now for that matter.

i guess cutler might have been a good idea, but i think leinert would be the pick if it came down to a qb.

agreed

the fact you even bring up drafting cutler, makes me want to cut…ler you

You think Ngata wasn't better than Redding?

I agree that Wimbley makes no sense, and I am glad we didn’t draft Cutler, but Ngata would have been beautiful.

Of course.....

I also agree that revisiting old drafts is pretty pointless at this juncture…..

I always thought Redding was overrated.........

………..Even in his “career year”, when he had 8 sacks. 3 of them were in one game. It all seemed kind of flukey at the time. I didn’t think he was for real. After that, he took a “leadership role”………which consisted of talking big and loud after we won, and then silent and invisible when we lost. I don’t miss him.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

Think the idea is that

we had so many holes on the team then (as we do now) and if we spent a 1st rounder on another DT when we had established starters in Rogers and Redding, people would be up in arms. Who were our LB’s when Sims was taken? Did we still have Boss Bailey? Teddy Lehman?

still had

both those guys, but lehman was no longer a starter.
