Sifting through Detroit's roster

So while the topic is fresh in all of our minds, I thought I would scan the Lions' roster and divide the players into three categories:

  1. Keepers. These are players the Lions can build their future around.
  2. Worth Learning More About. For various reasons, I wouldn’t give up on the players in this group.

good post

i agree with most of what you had to say up there, although im not sure if i would say levy is a nucleus type player, and aaron brown isnt all that intruigiing, nor is derrick williams.

i would think guys like buchanon and marquand manuel, who was doing a solid job should have been included in that list

Age

Who cares if they learn a new trick

they only have a couple years left in their tanks.

I think the point of hte article is what is the nucleus of a team you will build around in the future, not what guys might be stop gaps until you get the real guys in here. Does anyone think that Manual or Buchanon are going to be our DB answers for the next 5 years? Or will they last until we draft someone at that position.

I love Grady Jackson, but no one thinks he is our solution for the D Line.

not what i meant

hell no, manuel and buchanon arent nucleus type players, but they sure deserve another look.

moving Levy past Sims?

is Seifert on crack? i don’t think this is the plan here.

don’t we eventually want both these guys on the field?

also Williams is showing wiggle? way too tentative on in his returns. also not that intrigued yet by aaron brown.

no mention of Felton. Jerome Felton is a player. also, those Kevin Smith has shown enough for us to know he can ball—despite obvious problems in our run blocking.

i agree with a lot of it but most of what was said is just the twaddle you hear from a casual observer of the Lions roster who probably watched some highlights.

I posted elsewhere

I also don’t understand why the Lions fans have given up on Sims. The guy has done nothing but lead our team in tackles the past 3 years. So he is having some issues this year, does that mean he is a busted draft pick? Or we should ship him off for a low draft pick?

Forgot about Felton

He’s been solid this year, when he hasn’t been injured.

No offense

But leading a talent barren team in tackles doesn’t really prove anything. Especially a defense that has proven to be the worst in football the last what, 8 years?

I haven’t given up on Sims yet either, he must have suffered this injury earlier than when it was reported. He just hasn’t played like himself.

Foote?

I’m suprised Foote isn’t worth keeping around in the author’s opinion. I actually think he’s been pretty stout so far. I too would like to see a healthy Sims and Levy eventually before saying that Sims won’t work in this system. That defensive line and the backfield is so horrendous at this point the linebackers are getting lost in the shuffle a little too much to showcase any talent.
Levy has been impressive, in my opinion, but mostly impressive for a rookie. He is still making mistakes (e.g. leaving his assignment in goal line defense, trying to hit hard instead of wrapping up, etc.), but hopefully those will be less and less as they move forward.
Delmas has been about as good as advertised and I am enthusiastic that he will be a solid member of that defense for years to come (barring injury).
Derrick Williams and Aaron Brown were both a massive dissapointment in the return game. Both have shown some positive things on offense though, and maybe they can start to put together some impressive performances during the second half of the season.
Stafford has been what most of us expected.
Calvin will be fine, in spite of some poor games lately.
Pettigrew is the player I am most dissapointed with. I’ve yet to see him make really impressive catches, or do much in the blocking game either. Again I say that if you are going to draft a TE in the first round he had better be a pro-bowl caliber TE…right now I would just as soon have Michael Gaines back.

You didn't read the full article then....

Personally, I think Foote will resign and finish his career in Detroit.

However, I don’t believe K Smith is a ‘nucleus’ player.

Also, it would seem that the Lions have more ‘potential’ on the DLine position.

I would like to see a LT, CB, and RB in this upcoming draft.

A “Jake Long” LT…

A violent RB… and a CB that has the skill set necessary for the NFL level.

you have to realize that TE position is a tough one to play..

It takes a couple of years to for TE’s to come into their own..

A look at some TE’s first years’ stats

Keller Winslow Sr. 25 rec/ 255 yards/ 2 TD- played in 7 games. Started one. Was not injured

Ozzie Newsome 38 rec/ 589 yards/ 2TD – played in 16 games. No starts

Tony Gonzales 33 rec/ 368 yards/ 2TD – played in 16 games. No starts

Jason Witten 35 rec/ 347 yards/ 1TD – played in 15 games. 1 start.

Yeah… it is a small sample. But it is pretty much the norm. Give Grew some time. I think he could be a good one.

I saw him mention Foote...

…but I thought it was in reference to players that are no longer considered to have “potential”…meaning that he believed Foote to have reached his ceiling. I’ll have to re-read it.
Honestly, I don’t see any “potential” on the DLine…other than possible backups. Sammie Lee Hill is a large, strong, athletic player…but he is being completely drowned out at this point by his other partners in crimes on that line. The DLine is in the bottom half in sacks and rushing YPG, and they are very near the bottom in Yard per rush.
I’m still giving K Smith a pass, because I don’t think he’s getting much help…but I agree that he is not a “nucleus” player. When I think “Nucleus”, I think guys you simply can not move forward without…Kevin looks replaceable.

Word....

He said he didn’t include Foote as he was a FA addition and is a limited fix.

I still like Landon Cohen, Fluellen, and Hill as potential “Solid rotational guys”…. However… we need a ‘big baby’ and an edge rusher to make them better.
