Hint of Greatness?
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS AN OVERLOAD OF STAFFORD MAN-LOVE.
Down six, 1:46 left to go. 88 yards of turf to go. No timeouts. Quarterbacks can achieve greatness or fall into oblivion It's the situation that quarterbacks dreams of...
...well, kind of. It wasn't exactly the biggest stage, as two 1-8 teams were fighting for the rights to 31st on most power rankings, but for both teams, the game meant something.
The drive wasn't the prettiest, as Matthew Stafford and the Lions dinked and dunked their way towards midfield eating up more clock than they could've afforded to. It all led to a 2nd and 10 from Cleveland's 32 yard line with :08 left on the clock. The Lions had time to run two plays; perhaps one to get 10-15 yards closer and give themselves one more chance to win.
Stafford took the snap. Looking downfield, he was indecisive. Suddenly he rolled to his left, at that point, it was pretty clear this was going to be the Lions last play of the game. As a defender closed in on him, everyone in Ford Field was screaming for him to get rid of the ball. Instead, Stafford rolled back right, avoiding the sack, set his feet and fired downfield. Stafford had no idea what happened. As soon as the ball left his hand, he was crushed, landing forcefully on his left shoulder. As he grimaced in pain on the turf, I'm sure he could figure out what happened. The crowd groaned as the pass landed in the defender's hand in the endzone as the clock read 0:00.
But then, a little yellow rag fell from the heavens, like a green mushroom landing in Mario's lap as he fell into a pit of doom. Pass interference, Cleveland. First down on the one yard line. The Lions were still alive.
But Stafford wasn't thinking about the next, game-deciding play. He was writhing in pain. Stumbling towards the endzone, grasping his shoulder, Stafford knew he couldn't stay in.
So Daunte Culpepper stepped in. As he went under center, my expectations were lower than with the previous game. I don't know what the play call was, but I'd be surprised if it was a pass. With Shaun Rogers in the middle of that line, they probably would've lost the game. But then, miracle #2 happened. Cleveland, trying to get a read on Detroit's play call, called a timeout.
It was at this point that Stafford turned into an NFL quarterback. Stafford stepped in. Tossing his left arm to the side like a candy wrapper, he went under center. Taking the snap, he thew a laser directly aimed at Brandon Pettigrew's shoulder. For mere mortals, the ball would've gone directly through their body, leaving a carcass with a NFL sized hole. But Pettigrew snagged the ball, likely breaking all the fingers in his hands.* And just like that, the Lions had won and become the leading contender for the Wild Card. Stafford, knowing that the ball was caught from the moment he fired it from his fingers, tried to celebrate. He attempted to raise his arms in elation, but the pain was too much. He didn't even smile. Instead, he looked to the sidelines in pain, screaming "It's out! It's out!" presumably referring to his left arm being out of his socket. He didn't care he had just won the game; he knew the game was won at the beginning of the drive. He was just in utter shock that his perfectly molded body could possibly be tarnished to a point in which he had the arm of a mere peon.
(Alright, back to reality)
With that pass, Stafford became the first rookie in NFL history to throw five TD passes in a game. But the pass had a lot more significance than that. He had successful driven his team to a game-winning drive, he drastically improved the chances of the Lions avoiding the first pick in the draft, and he created a moment in his life that he'll never forget. If Stafford becomes a Pro Bowl quarterback at any point in his career (AND I'M NOT SAYING THAT WILL HAPPEN), people will point to this game as his first defining moment. Despite having the use of only one arm, Stafford managed to throw a game-winning touchdown in his rookie year.
Sure there are reasons to downplay this accomplishment. It wasn't a pretty drive; without a fortunate pass interference call, Stafford may be the goat, with another three-interception game; and most importantly, it was done against Cleveland.
But none of those points matter in a win. Stafford finished 26-43 for 422 yards, 5 TDs and 2 INTs, in a winning effort. He created a moment in which he and Lions fans alike will not forget in a long time.
We're 2-8, YAY!
*In reality, it was probably the weakest throw Stafford made all day, but I'm riding high right now, so humor me.

A slightly stylised replication of events
Very nice nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure that all happened
Especially the Wild Card part.

Hope he's OK!
It would be nice to see him play Thursday, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Either way, I’m very happy to see him maturing before our eyes. The Lions could’ve just given up after getting down 24-7. And even after getting down 37-31 late….but they kept going. I love it. Glad we could get the win, ugly as it was a lot of the game.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
week over week he just keeps getting better, better reads, better throws, better leadership, better speed...progress
…and for all those who say sanchez was the better pick…how’s his progress going?? mwa-ha-ha…lol
I love it.
Another 5 turnover game behind one of the best offensive lines in the game. Imagine if we had that O-Line and gave Stafford time to make decisions.
Remember what I said about a great QB improving his teammates?
Perfect example today. Stafford’s play elevated that of his teammates, and kept them in this one.
Anyone still think he should have sat this year?
yes
Sorry Nate but we have seen him get the stuffings knocked out of him in every game so far, he should have sat until next year. The coaching staff should have been using him like the Falcos and the Ravens used their rookies last year and pounded the ball down peoples throughts, but our O-line isn’t good enough to do that so we have to watch him go out there and get pumled week after week. I’m not saying that he isn’t going to be the man, cause I think he will be in time, but there is NO way that a rookie hould be out there throwing 40+ times a game.
According to who?
IMO, he’s only learning the shit he shouldnt be doing in a situation where we’re not ready to win a ton of games anyways. His development is paramount, and I think he’s learning in a big way how to overcome adversity and play with a winners attitude through negative situations.
If he’d have sat, I’m willing to bet that we wouldn’t have won the two games we did, and to boot, Stafford would be in the situation and mindset he’s in now at the onset of next year. He is the man in Detroit, and this year is doing nothing but solidifying it. He’s not a glass man, yeah he’s been hurt twice, but he’s a 21 year old kid. He’s getting paid for this shit, and he’s playing like it.
So why does a QB throwing 40 times and getting hit mean he should sit?
Nate it's silly to argue the point but here we go again.
The difference between the Ravens/Falcons and our lions of this year are the following.Neither of those 2 teams had a legit QB that had been a probowler they both had to start their rookies, we have a QB that may or may not have won more games this year. Both those teams have legit running games, something that the lions still don’t have no matter how bad I want us to. You didn’t see Ryan/Flacco throwing the ball 40+ times last year did you??? No you didn’t. Staff shouldn’t have been the starter at the beginning of the season then and he shouldn’t have been the starter on day 1 now. Sorry he is getting pounded into the ground on a weekly trial by fire basis, and it’snot fair to him or to the rest of the team or us fans that we are watching what could be a great QB in the future get pummled week after week, that’s all i’m saying Nate.
And I agree
But I can’t agree that it’s the wrong decision – Staff is getting experience and able to be a rookie, and make rookie mistakes in a timeframe where the damage done is limited. The TEAM is bad, and his mistakes, while painful, aren’t doing 1/10th the damage they’d do next year. He’s going to be miles ahead of where he’d be if he would have sat.
There is no substitute for experience in this game, especially at the QB position. Maybe if there was a great vet QB to learn from or something, but Stafford was drafted for the here and now, and he’s showing how worth it he was.
As far as I see it, one year of sitting wouldn't be that beneficial
I’d like to think our O-line and Defence can be radically improved in one year, but that seems unlikely. So, Stafford, if he had sat, would still be behind a bad o-line with no defence to help. Right now, Stafford is getting real experience and has at least wormed his way into the hearts of Lions fans.

and both matt ryan and flacco are not looking so spectacular this year
sophmore blues or whatever…staff is growing. i’ve said it before…i’d rather have someone who stumbles and fumbles out of the gate, but gets better each game, learns from each mistake…rather than someone who strikes it rich from the get go…they don’ tknow how to pick up the pieces

Jay Cutler was just in the same situation against Philly
And he threw a pick. Obviously the Browns are not the Eagles, but I am just saying….

I was thinking the same thing...
….but like you said, it was a different defense. But he’s been choking a lot this season and has a much better foundation around him, if you ask me.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
I said without the PI call
Without the flag, he had 3. The hail mary was intercepted.

OMG the lions win again.
O.K first off howdy gang, sorry I have not been on in a while but my comp got hacked by someone and it keeps shuttingdown on me and pissing me off. Second I’ve been reading alot of your posts after todays win, and I gotta try and chime in here. True Staff infection has that “it” factor that is obvious, he was out there playing playground football without a care in the world, it would of been niceto actually see that game instead of highlights, but Grew and Megatron are looking like we have a very good foundation to build from here, now like alot of you said if we could get him some real protection he could be the man in the future especially if our top notch young RB can stay healthy. Pope Sean Pual I am sorry I am so over the top when a few months ago I jumped on you for calling out the lions for only good for 3 to 4 wins this year. . .it sure does look like you were dead on on that call. I still think we could have done better if Cullpizzle would of started from go but who knows.Rev if you read this “whats up bro?” I think I have gotten rid of my hacker so I can actually get to the POD and actually type to you all again. Does anyone else half ass wish we would of lost that game today so we could of had the better draft pick once again next year? Bishop if you actually got to watch that game how good/bad did they actually look on the field, listening to the game on the radio was sweet after the first quarter that is, but to actually have gotten to see it would of been better.
Hey Davis
Long time no see.

I've been here
just everytime I tryed to type something my comp would crash, talk about frustrating. . . .
aside from the first quarter
the team as a whole looked extremely exciting…attacking, making plays…but without the first quarter none of this would have been all that dramatic. i was watching…in disgust through the first q…really, down by 21pts to the Browns!!?!!!?!?!?!? But then a story unfolded that was better than any Spielburg movie could have.
Can I just say
That the 75 yd touchdown to Calvin was the play I have been waiting for all season. CJ making a great move to confuse the corner, Stafford being mobile enough to get himself out of trouble, then a perfect strike in stride for an “easy” touchdown. That game winning drive was just icing on the cake after the 2nd quarter comeback.
Agree
I’ve been waiting for a big one like that too. It was such a great throw, especially since it was to Stafford’s left and on the run. Hit Calvin right in stride.

Glad you finally got to see the game
One of the rare moments I was glad to be outside of MI so I could watch a game live. I was pretty depressed after the first quarter, but watching them battle back to tie it up made me feel that Stafford was becoming what we all hope he can be.
Watching the final moments in a bar – standing up with the entire bar around me and cheering for the Lions (at the beginning of the game there were only two lions fans and a Chiefs fan that was with us) was amazing.

The 1 thing that impressed me with that throw.
Yeah he finally hit Megatron in stride; yeah; But the zip that that ball had, and the fact that Staff infection threw it off his back foot was simply amazing, his arm is every bit the cannon that Favre/Marino/Elway ever had, now we just have to put a team around him.
Lol I didn't see it live except for a grainy stream replay
But I watched it on NFL.com today.
Pride of Detroit, SB Nation's Lions Blog
It was a thing of beauty!
The only thing confusing is why it isn’t done again…and again…and again! For any team thinking they can cover Calvin with single coverage underneath….please keep thinking that!!!
