Remember when Detroit Lions fans wanted to draft Aaron Curry?
Back in the days leading up to the draft, Lions fans everywhere were clamoring for the front office to do the right thing and draft Aaron Curry with the first overall pick.
Stats of both players on 11/22/09:
Matt Stafford: 26/43, 422 yards, 5 (!!!) TDs, 2 INTs, breaking several rookie records
Aaron Curry: 1 TKL
Aren't you glad the Lions management wasn't dumb enough to be swayed by the opinion of the fans?

Curry had one tackle yesterday???
That’s pretty bad. I want to see this team with a few more drafts under its belt – drafts sans Matt Millen. We may be building something very special here with Staff as our main attraction!!!

I wanted to draft Stafford, But I truly like Curry also
The QB position had to be addressed first. in my humble opinion.

Its comparing apples to oranges...
And one godly game against the lowly Browns, does not a great QB make (yet!)…
From all accounts, Curry has played at or above expectations out in Seattle…
I’d take the flip side of your hypothesis and wonder where the Lions might be, had we drafted all defense last year. I think better…
That said, I like Stafford and agree he has a future here. We really need to draft an OL to help block for him. Now go get some studs on Defense!!!
Just livin' the dream...

preach on brother
I don’t care how good Staff may be in time with a good O-line, if we don’t address the pass rush in the next draft we are still going to be in the bottom half of the league, period. We have not had anyone on the edge since Porchette retired some years ago. If the Lions are ever going to contend again, we need 2 studs on the D-line, and not at Tackle either. I just wonder howe good our secondary really could be if we could actually get some pressure on the QB. Hell guys no secondary can cover for more than 5 seconds in the NFL, and with our “piss poor” line in a lot of the games the QB’s have had 6 to 9 second to pick and choose who they are going to throw too. This thursday is going to be something interesting to see since the Packers O-line has had more problems than anyother team keeping “Duck Rogers” off his back.

True true
Lost in yesterday’s amazing comeback win was the fact that our Defense, currently ranked #32 played like they were ranked #45!!!! Truly horrible, particularly in the secondary (but that is no surprise to anyone). Bring back Mike Cofer and Ken Fantetti!!!! LOL
DRAFT ALL DEFENSE IN 2009!!!

Curry has been inferior to at least 2 OLBs drafted in the first day.

Cool and ty,
other than fantasy value I can’t say I have kept up with GB this year.

Absurd comparison.
Not only are their respective teams in totally different situations, but these two players don’t even play on the same side of the ball…let alone the same position.
I wouldn’t exactly turn my nose up at the prospect of having Curry (in spite of a one tackle game). No matter who they would have drafted, it would have been a rookie playing for a very poor team.

That combo would have put anyone in a funk!!!
Well glad to see you back my man. If we had only beaten the Rams I would be so loving this team. I still hope we can eek out a Victory but we have a tough schedule coming up that’s for sure.

in other news
James Laurinitis recorded 15 tackles yesterday for the Rams. I’d pay to see a Lions LB do that this season.

And ProBowler Julian Peterson had.....
2 tackles yesterday. So what’s your point?
by WBL on Nov 23, 2009 4:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Julian Peterson didn't cost a #1 overall draft pick and one of the largest contracts in NFL history.
by Fearless Frog on Nov 23, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm confused
You’re post basically says “aren’t you all glad the Lions didn’t draft Curry because he only had one tackle yesterday and Stafford was awesome,” and then you point to Stafford’s contract?
I just made a more apples to apples comparison, Peterson the probowler had 2 tackles, one more than Curry. Everyone has low tackle games. So I’m confused, what is your point now?
by WBL on Nov 23, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yea that confused me too
but really…u cant really look the amount of tackles as an indicator of how strong a defender is. for the most part, its true, strong defensive players get tackles but it also depends on who your playing and what position your playing.
minny’s strong part of the line is the left side, so they run the ball to the left a lot. thats usually where the WLB is lined up (pretty sure, unless i have my defensive map switched)..that why you see WLBs get a lot more tackles than SLBs. thats probably one of the reasons why he got fewer tackles than guys like cushing and mathews.
and to me at least…i think its absurd to compare a middle linebacker like Laurinitis or Manaluga to an outside LB. their tasks are completely different on a defense.
and its even more absurd to compare a QB to a LB….its impossible to compare the value of players on oposite sides of the ball, espcially when your talking about two teams that are in different phases of rebuilding.

Aaron Curry costs far, far more than Julian Peterson in terms of salary and the resource of a #1 draft pick.
And is not much better, if at all. I’d contend he’s worse. Jim Mora just announced Curry is going to get less playing time due to how much he’s struggling, going to be a 2-down LB until further notice.

When have the Lions ever drafted based on the fans' opinion?
This is a moot point.

honestly…this is gonna sound a little stupid, but watching the clip of stafford throwing the ball on the Jimmy Fallon show convinced me that he is the real deal

I wanted Curry
Didnt feel as the Lions werent prepared (no offensive line, weak defense) to bring in a rookie QB. If Stafford can survive he could be a winning QB in Detroit. Dont want to be all super positive and say he could be a hall of famer.
