Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

The Future?

Well it looks like we have our Franchise QB, a great Young TE, one of the best WR in the NFL, a great young leader in the Defensive Secondary, and a Veteran LB core.

Areas of Strength: Quarterback,Linebackers,Tight End

Areas of Need: Cornerback, Defensive Line,Offensive Line

Areas that could use an upgrade: Wide Receiver,Running Back,Safety

ok now that we have addressed the thing we need to fix lets go over this Ndamukong Suh and Eric Berry are the only two guys worthy of Drafting with our 1st pick (In my opionion) maybe Taylor Mays,Terrence Cody,Russell Okung or yes even Dez Bryant could be intruiging here as well but i pray it will be one of the first two mentioned.

My ideal Draft would be this:

RD1 Eric Berry SS Tennessee

RD 2 Dan Williams DT Tennessee

RD 3 Mick Williams DT Pitt

those would be my first 3 picks if i could get them, this sets up your Defensive Line (a new Williams wall in the NFC North?) and give you argueably the best Safety combo in the NFL (Delmas,Berry). The penetration your going to get from the DT should allow more one on one matchups for DE's (Hunter,Bryan,Avril) and takes a little pressure off the LB core, the Safeties will make a QB think twice a lot and will also be able to help a lot in the cover game. Even though i this is the draft i would do, there are a lot of prospects i like, lets take a look

Star-divide

Eric Berry SS  6-0 195: This guy is a beast plain and simple. He is a can't miss prospect at Safety. Some say he could be the next Ed Reed, but who knows.

Taylor Mays SS 6-4 225: A freak, although i like Berry a whole lot better this guy has a bunch of talent too, and is probably worthy of being mentioned in the top 5

Ndamukong Suh DT 6-4 305: He has Kong in his name im just gonna leave it at that

Terrence Cody DT 6-5 365: Go watch the Alabama vs Tennessee game and you will see why i like this guy, he is a game changer, he does have conditioning questions though

Gerald McCoy DT 6-4 295: This guy is built like a tank he has nice athleticsim, but i have watched him play a couple times this year and he doesn't seem to get through a lot and i dont know that i like this, but still a great prospect

Russell Okung DT 6-5 305: I don't know to much about him but it sounds like he is better than Backus and thats all that matters right?

Dez Bryant WR 6-2 210: Would probably look great next to Calvin Johnson but can we afford to take a WR with our 1st pick?

I don't really see many other choices for our first pick but there are some other prospects that intruige me later on

Kendall Hunter or Keith Toston RBs OK State: Ok look both will be later round picks and i look at it this way, we have drafted to RBs from Oklahoma Colleges in the past and they did pretty well for us (Billy Sims Oklahoma, Barry Sanders OK State)

Dan Williams DT Tenn and Mick Williams DT Pitt: Basically i want our own Williams wall. I have seen Dan Willams play and i think he will be a steal for somebody

Mark Dell,Blair White,Greg Matthews WRs: All have shown flashes of good things so we will see

Jermaine Gresham TE: if he drops i would love to see him taken, i mean think of Stafford having him and Pettigrew to throw to

Any way those are my thoughts, i didn't include any DEs cause i think Jason Hunter and Copeland Bryan as well as Cliff Avril can be good with the right peices by them. I didn't inculde any RBs cause i am just not impressed with any in this Draft Class same thing goes with CB, but hey its early we will see at the combine

Great breakdown

I want Suh, but I’m thinking he won’t be available when we pick. I wouldn’t have a problem with taking Berry, but I’d prefer a lineman of some sort.

I think you’re going to see Schwartz get some beef on either the DL or OL in rounds 1 – 3. I would be very shocked if that weren’t the case.

i don't think he goes positional in this draft...he won't reach

he will take bpa as there are sooo many gaps to fill. i am guessing either okung or berry…one of the two…st louis is qb, clev likely qb, raiders…who knows…cheifs need oline quite possibly dez bryant here too…the bucs take suh unfortunately…this is all provided we finish ahead of them all…

my top three are suh, berry & okung…any one of those & i will be happy with the first pick. after that, i trust the f.o. to find lightning in those picks like they did this year…that plus another couple solid fa pick-ups…a heavy investment in the training/medical staff, and we may be only a “prevented couple of injuries” away from a .500+ season.

Think about this

Schwartz’s squad & FO has now had ALL YEAR to analyze these picks, rather than the 3 months this past year, since he was hired in January.

KC is better than us

i dont really want a DT in the first round. i think there is enough depth in the draft to get a good one in the 2nd round, especially when the lions are gonna have an early second round pick, which is pretty much good enough to get first round talent.

as far as round 1 pick: i would like them to move down a bit in the draft and take Taylor Mays. Just imagine that combination of hard-hitters: Mays and Delmas. then i would trade the picks gained from moving down, plus the lions 3rd rounder to move up into late to middle second round. Take a LT with the early 2nd round pick, and a DT with the later one or vice versa.

i think this way we can adress three positions with the most talent

There are at least four safeties I would take ahead of Mays

Mays appears to be another Roy Williams. A big safety who always goes for the big hit but can’t cover a rug. There are numerous Juniors who may be coming out that I would take….. like:
Eric Berry – Tenn.; Morgan Burnett – Ga. Tech; Reshad Jones – Georgia; Earl Thomas – Texas; Chad Jones – LSU

Delmas needs a complimentary safety, not a twin.

by det32 on Nov 23, 2009 2:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I like what det32 has here.....except....

the Lions will go BPA. The only positions that won’t figure in that will be QB and TE. Everything else, yes including WR, will be part of the mix. Don’t be surprised if we end up with an RB in the second round depending on who drops.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 23, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You could be right about that

Although, I don’t think they’ll target LB, unless Foote and Peterson are out of town.

Also

Some other names I like most of if not all of you might not know…

MiQyuall Lewis RB Ball St
Emmanuel Sanders WR SMU
Max Komar WR Idaho
Corey Wooten DE Northwestern
Lindsey Witten DE Conneticut
Mana Silva CB Hawaii

And, I honestly think Earl Thomas for Texas is better than Taylor Mays…dispite what the boards say…

So, Berry, Thomas, Mays…as far as Safeties go!

Berry is more of an athlete than a football player......

Mays is an athlete and a football player…..where his speed doesn’t make plays, his skillset does. Unfortunately, he has “character issues” so we can just about rule him out.

Sorry I disagree. Berry makes plays, Mays has great "measureables".

Mays is a Roy Williams clone. Big hits, no covering/ball skills.

That's why the running joke already is that Al Davis will see Taylor May's 40 time and draft him......

It’s Mays they say that about, not Berry.

O-line is more important than D-line right now

If our D-line sucks, the worst that can happen is we lose football games.

If our O-line sucks, the worst that can happen is we lose our prized QB for good. Both need to be improved tremendously if we want a playoff team. But you’ve gotta go with the one that protects your other important piece first.

by Trysdor on Nov 23, 2009 3:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If our D-line sucks, we give up lots more points, meaning lots more playing from behind, meaning lots more sacks = more risk that we lose our prized QB for good.

I think they should go with value over position deciding which line to address where in the draft.

by n4ry4 on Nov 23, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Either D or O line would work for me

I really think Schwartz knows the importance of both lines. He should draft accordingly……..or at least one hopes. If Millen were still around he would likely draft Colt McCoy or something stupid!! Glad those days are behind us.

I’m an SU guy – watch for Arthur Jones at DT from SU. Would love to see the Lions draft him in the 3 or 4 round.

Digging the Berry

If the lions draft Eric Berry or Taylor Mays it would probably cut the big plays against the Lions in half.

Taylor Mays is hype

No no no......

Eric Berry is hype…..Taylor Mays is a lesser version of Ronnie Lott.

by KDawg on Nov 23, 2009 9:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt we get either one.....

And don’t get me wrong…..I think Eric Berry is a pretty good safety. I just do not see him as a top 5 pick. I don’t see Mays as a top 5 pick either.

by KDawg on Nov 23, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i think we may get lucky

i see enough hype around five or six player right now…there very well could be three or four teams trying to trade up into the top five…we could easily slide down to six or seven through nine…think of the teams…washington, carolina, san fransisco (who has two first round picks might i remind you), chicago (not likely a trade partner here), jets, dare i say the once six and o bronco’s, i think there is potential…especially with no cba…teams might be more willing and less afraid to trade up this year…not a bad spot to be in…

by londonlion on Nov 23, 2009 9:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hope so LL

Fourth may be a good spot to trade out of. It depends on what value we get for that pick before I would drop out of it. I think it will come down to which QBs come out and how they look in the combines and who is left when the Lions pick.

Hopefully one team wants to leapfrog another that is picking just behind Detroit. We should be able to get a first and second rounder minimum.

Watch out for NE in this draft....

The Patriots have a shit load of picks in the second round this year and I would love to see the lions make a offer for a couple of those picks from NE.

I think Aaron Kampman is going to be a FA next year

I think he’d be a fantastic addition to our DLine, classic productive 4-3 vet…

Yea there's no way he stays in that 3-4 system.

he hates it and is terrible in it. You can just tell he is a 4-3 DE not a 3-4 OLB. He hasn’t done anything in that system

This year there will be a few good lineman to be had...

in the early rounds. And as well in the late rounds. Lions need to do what they did last year. Draft the B.A.P. There will be a few FA CB’s this year also.
