2009-10 Drafts

Hi, another newcomer to following the Lions via Athens, Georgia.  I was a fan of Stafford at UGA and I believe and believed that he would be an excellent NFL quarterback.  Like many football fans, I am hoping that my powers of prediction will prove to be correct and was heartened by number 9's performance against Cleveland.  I started reading this site as well as the Free Press and M Live shortly before the draft.  I remember there being several different draft strategies that the fans were espousing:

1.  Draft the QB

2.  Go for Curry, the guy who was expected to be can't miss.

3.  Go left tackle and get a QB in 2010 when the QB crop was supposedly superior.

4.  Others said trade down for more picks or veterans but it's not possible to assess this later because I have no idea if any offers were made and what those offers consisted of.

With 10 games in the book, do Lions fans think they took the best approach?

Stafford looks pretty good.  His rookie season is typical statistically but he's had the flashes of greatness that give you hope.

Curry's year was summarized by SI in its power rankings as:  "low impact".  This was  the concern of those who did not want Curry, that a number 1 pick  needed to be spent on someone who would have much more impact on the game than a LB that did not often rush the passer.

Jason Smith, whose season has been mediocre, has been the best of the top 3 tackles with Andre Smith not playing yet and Eugene Monroe in and out of the line up.  Also, if you'd gone this way, you'd be looking at a tough decision QB wise this year.  You would be choosing between Bradford, who was injured all year, Tebow, who is not a prototype NFL quarterback, and Colt McCoy, who I'm not crazy about for the NFL either.  If Mallet, Clausen and Locker come out, the decision becomes even more difficult with a bunch of raw talent.

I think of all the first round QB's in 2009-10 you may have the best one and now you're in the position of choosing amongst several potential impact players (Barry, Okung, Suh, etc.) instead of having to take one of a set of QB's with big question marks.

I think that Detroit may have gotten it right.

I hope so

I think we got it right too. I also think Schwartz and Mayhew are smart enough to know what holes to fill via the draft and FA. We really have to hope they can get it done. In the end they’re the 2 that will be drafing and signing players.

Yes, Staff was the best of the lot I think.

We still have a long way to go. Hopefully a few more parts [three starters at least] get picked up in the 2010 draft.

I agree that Stafford was the best pick at #1

The real debate is who the F.O. drafted after that. You would have thought they would have grabbed at least one OL in early rds to protect Stafford. I think that mistake is now showing it’s ugly head.

To their credit Pettigrew, Delmas, and Levy are gonna stick and maybe even be great players. But was it the right choice long term? I dunno…I would have grabbed all OL last year and all Defense in this draft.

Just livin' the dream...

Agreed

I now believe that Strategy #1 was the best strategy to take. Of course, things can still change, but I am very happy with Stafford and wouldn’t trade him for another QB coming out next year.

Sold but holding the sales receipt still

Staff looks like he will b the man in a few yers from now, but I thought the same thing after the first year with Harrington also. The reason I’m still holding the sales receipt is he is getting the stuffing knocked out of him way too much and I hope he doesn’t get Joey’s happy feet in the years to come. I personnally think that the front office is on the right track, I don’t even know when the last time us true lions fans can say that was, but we got 5 damn good players outta this draft that have contributed on the field of play so far and a 6th might be just as good in the next year or 2, that’s why we need to get us a couple of studs on the D-end to let our D-tackles not be double teamed on every single play. We still need a tackle to replace Backus in the next year or so, if we can get him in the next draft so he can play a little and build his NFL body then we will be all the better for it in 2 years from now. I think we need another tall rec with some kind of speed to compliment Megatron as well in the next draft, the stud outta Notre Dame would be a hell of a pick in the second round if he is still there, he may not have blazing speedbut he sure does have the hands and body to play in the No Fun League.
