Brandon Pettigrew Out for Season
From the Lions' official site:
Today’s MRI revealed that TE Brandon Pettigrew’s knee injury suffered against the Green Bay Packers will require season-ending surgery.
This is really disappointing, because Pettigrew was really starting to play quite well lately. He and Stafford were developing a nice rapport, and Pettigrew was making a lot of big plays. Although Casey FitzSimmons and Will Heller did a good job of filling in for Pettigrew yesterday after he suffered the knee injury, it would have been nice for the rookie to continue to develop. Instead he is out for the season and will be headed to injured reserve.

Really sad news
I’m more concerned for his status next season. Packers tackle Mark Tauscher tore his ACL last December and wasn’t available until the middle of this season. Grew is younger so hopefully he’ll heal faster, but it’s still a cause for concern.

That is bad news.....
However, it opens the door for Big Dan Gronkowski to shine……I hope they bring him up from the PS now.

+1, KDdawg. Remember his TD in preseason with 3 Colts ragging on him? A nice photo.

It Does Suck....
……But at kleast they are making the right decision to have surgery and not play htrough it…….This team isnt going to win many more games anyway…..the expierience would have been nice but get the surgery and be healthy for 2010 Brandon!!!

Has anyone done a study on man hours " lost " due to injury ?
Surely, The Lions must rank number one in that category. Every year, year in and year out, we get killed by injuries. Would be nice to see if The N.F.L. tracked those statistics and see where we ranked versus the 31 other teams. Down right sickening. Well, I guess this means all of our draft prospects will see action this year…

I think it speaks volumes to the quality of our strength and conditioning program.....
And if the FO is smart, they will make some changes there in a hurry.

I was thinking the exact same thing
while I was watching the game on Thursday. Just too many injuries this year. Guys are even slow getting up from tackles. We just seem to get banged up pretty easily

Strength and Conditioning
Apparently this team was in much more disarray in other areas besides the quality of players than we knew about.
This is definitely a testament to our strength and conditioning team. They, along with a few players and Stan Kwan, need to be replaced during this coming off season.
Our injury list seems to grow every week. Its embarrassing.
I am sure most fans were hoping to add some more starters to the lineup in this upcoming draft, but we will continue to have to add depth players as well since almost all of our draftees have been injured at one time or another this year.

Just counted the injury list...
There are 30 listed injuries for the Lions this season, and 15 players on injured reserve- not counting Pettigrew. That is quite a bit to overcome with a team that is coming off an 0-16 season and has very little talent to draw from. It will take 3 years for the Lions to build a competitive team. The injury to Pettigrew will allow the coaching staff to see what Gronkowski can do in actual game situations. I have to say that Stafford showed that he’s got guts playing with a seperated shoulder. They used say, about Bobby Layne, that he never lost a game- he simply ran out out of time. I’m getting the feeling that Matt is a similar type of player.

Filling the needs?
Makes sense. You play a good team, get beat, then face a weaker team and have a chance. Cleveland is just terrible this year so they had to get that one to climb one step further out of the basement.
If they bother to draft some O-linemen in the first few rounds they should get better next year. At the time I said the Lions should take Micheal Oher and regarless of this injury to Pettigrew they should have. Oher can play either tackle position and might be the best O-linemean taken is this past draft. Pettigrew looks like he is going to be good, but the Lions #1 need is improving the O-line.
Bernard, Percy and AP oh my!

To get Stronger
If it could get any worse… Our TE is out for the season, great just great. Now the Lions have to start focusing on bigger things like an offensive line. Pick up a couple of good guards or tackles for next season and progressively they will be stronger. Protection allows Matthew Stafford to again PROGRESS (which apprently hasn’t happened in the last 5 years) and get the ball down the field. With a big push also to get Kevin Smith somewhere and work the running game. But anyways, you must learn to get better and injuries will make you see how important it is to be conservative.
Let’s just win it and go home.
