Fifty Years of Futility.
In spite of the title, this will not be another one of my rage filled rants about some mundane story that may have nudged me a little too close to the edge. I've actually seen evidence of this discussion before on Pride of Detroit, but a recent radio show has further peaked my curiosity.
I recently celebrated, errr, drank away my sorrows of my 30th birthday. My apologies to those of you are well past this not-so-magical date, but I'm finding it a little depressing being 30 years old and not rich, nor famous, nor am I an astronaut, a fireman, or any of the other dreams that a much younger me once had. What probably depresses me the most is that rather than having discussions about my favorite football team's Super Bowl chances...we're spending the majority of the week discussing an embarrasing loss to the Saint Louis Rams. But I digress...
I have been blessed to be part of a big family and I have three younger brothers. My brothers are 28, 23, and 19 respectively and out of the four of us only two of us are Lions fans. My father isn't from the States, but he's lived here most of his life and in Michigan his entire adult life...he's not much of a fan either. Out of all of us, I'm the only nutjob who finds it worthwhile to spend so much of my time obsessing about the Detroit Lions. I know I have my reasons for this team tugging at my heartstrings...but it's never really crossed my mind why the others don't share my obsession.
Considering the five decades that have passed since the last Lions Championship, I'm always wondering what hooked most of us fans? Is there a certain age group that has more fans than others? Is it possible that if the Lions don't start to turn things around soon that fanhood could skip an entire generation? Anyway, my extremely long story short...how long have you been a Lions fan?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Pride of Detroit's main writer, Sean, or the site in general. FanPosts are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable fans.

One last note...
…it really wasn’t my intent to turn this into “well I’ve been a Lions fan longer than you so I know better” type of post. I’m simply curious to know where the die hard fans sit on the generational scale.

I’m 36 dude. You made me feel really, really old. I became a Lions fan in 1977 when I was 4 years old on a trip to Michigan with my father (I grew up in Utica, NY). On that trip he took me to training camp open to the public that the Lions were holding and I fell in love with that team from that moment on. My older brother, who was with me, was already fascinated with the Steelers due to their colors so I needed a team and I got the GULP SIGH Lions!!!

If it wasn’t for Barry Sanders, I probably wouldn’t have grown up much of a Lions fan. But I just loved watching him play and became attached to the team as a result. It’d be really nice to see Staff and CJ take that spot and usher in a new generation of fandom.

I turn 31 in december
Turning 30 wasn’t a big deal for me, I just got married and I have a decent paying job to support us while she goes and gets her maters so I feel happy where I’m at right now…
Die hard lions fans that are in the late 30’s and 40’s those are the ones I want to know how they do it year in and year out…
I’ve been a lions fan since I could walk, I remeber the team rallying around mike Utley making it to the NFC championship game!!!!! but I also have alot of bad memories to, I was at the game against the Dolphins where we sucked so bad Bobby Ross quit right afterword…
After 9 horrible seasons I’m still a die hard fan, I just hope my kids will get to see a winning franchise by the time their born…

Right on.
I’m in almost the exact same boat (engaged to be married next August). Truly turning 30 wasn’t any more of a bummer than turning 29, 28, or 27….it’s just another year. There is something a little sad about watching pro sports now and thinking…“these guys are almost all younger than me!”

Old
I am 39 and have been a Lions fan since I was little. I grew up in Michigan and my parents are not much into sports, but I fell in love with football in the schoolyard. I never played on a school team (I was embarrassingly uncoordinated and nerdy), but I love the game. I never even considered that I might have a choice besides the Lions. Love the mascot, from Michigan. I have had favorite players on other teams, but never really wanted any other team to win like I did the Lions (I can’t even blame Barry Sanders since my fandom predates his arrival). I wish I had a reason . . .

Wow.
I’ve always wondered about fans that got hooked pre-Barry. It would be one thing if your parents were die-hard fans from the era of Champions, but to say your folks weren’t even that in to sports makes this all that much more confusing.

I almost voted for the age group younger than me and then I had to think for a minute
how sad is that?
I’m 26, but have only been a Lions fan for the past six years or so. I never really watched much football growing up (in Ohio), but when I moved to GR for college earlier this decade I started watching the Lions. You could say I came on board during the Mariucci-Harrington era and have been hooked ever since. (how did that happen?)

Grew up in Michigan...
I was a Huge Tigers fan when I was younger (still am). And playing and watching Baseball occupied most of my sporting attention span as a kid.
I really started watching A Lot of NFL football in high school and the Lions were the home state team. And even though they weren’t Great in the 90’s, they weren’t as bad as they are now.
I am now 31, and I moved to San Diego 9 yrs ago. Moving out of Michigan set my Fanaticism on fire. Being from Michigan and still being an all around Detroit sports fan I had to be informed and be able to rep my teams! It’s not easy being a Lions fan in So-Cal, but I’ll never give up on my team, it’s just not who I am.
I BELIEVE!! RESTORE THE ROAR!!! GO LIONS!!!!

I love San Diego...
…but there’s no chance I could ever be anything but a Lions or Tigers fan out there. The Tigers got me started into sports too though. I actually left that dream out of my post, but I really wanted to play left field at Tiger Stadium when I was a kid. That was until they started throwing curveballs in little league. I remember thinking I was going to get hit, turning away from the ball and closing my eyes, only to hear the umpire call strike. I quit playing after that game. What a bummer!

I'm 45 and was never....
a diehard Lions fan but I always pulled for them to win. I grew up a Cardinals fan (so I can totally relate to being a Lions fan) during the Coryell era.
My renewed fanship of the Lions is a bit self-serving since I am a UGA grad. I really want to see Stafford do well. His talent was in fact beyond what the UGA coaches knew how to develop, which is why some of his stats aren’t as great as some would like from a #1 draft pick. That is also one reason he came out early, I think he could see that another year at UGA might actually be detrimental to him.
I’m also a big Schwartz fan living in Nashville. The Lions have a great foundation and are headed in the right direction. Sunday was a bummer but there was a lot working against the Lions, missing CJ and going up against a desperate team. DROPPED PASSES didn’t help matters any either.
Keep the faith. This year will be rough but if Schwartz and Co. rebuild the D in the off-season, next year will be quite enjoyable.
by MusicCityDawg on Nov 3, 2009 5:37 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I hear this more often than I would have thought.
I know quite a few people who have become fans of pro team based on a player they like in College.
I still have hope that Schwartz will be the man to turn this thing around, but I am definitely lying if I say this last loss didn’t spill a little Kool-Aid.

I’ve been a Saints fan ever since they drafted Reggie Bush, even though Reggie Bush looks like mostly a bust now, I still follow them and if they Lions cant make it to the superbowl, I’m hoping the Saints will.

My story.
Born in Michigan and grew up a UofM fan because my dad was a State fan but the one team we agreed on was the Lions. I loved Barry Sanders, Herman Moore, and I think Mel Gray deserves to be in the HOF. I moved to Texas as my dad got transfered, unluckily it was during the Cowboys run in the 90’s. So I got to hear crap for dressing up as Barry for Halloween. Instead of watching the Cowboys on Sundays my grandma would send the previous weeks tapes of the Lions and we would watch those. (There are still some old Lions-Bears tapes back at home.)
Came back to Michigan after 2 years when the company downsized and rekindled the love affair with the Lions. I loved the 95 team and I still wonder the numbers that could have put up with today’s illegal contact rules. I still rip on my dad to this day who says Mitchell was his favorite Lions QB of all time. The exact moment that the news of Barry’s retirement broke on ESPN has been etched into my brain as I almost cried myself to sleep. I was 12. I absolutely loved Joey and blamed every other possible thing on why he failed and still believe if Martz gave him a chance he could have been great.
I am now 23 about to finish college and my fan hood has went from passionate to rabid since I left home. In my freshman year, coming from a small town and traveling to CMU, they were the one thing that was “normal” and I clung to them. Games like Eddie Drummond almost singlehandedly beating Jacksonville only to have the rest of the team take away his victory helped me get through that first year.
I also saw what bandwagon fans actually were and almost fought my roommate every Sunday who claimed to be a Pats fan. I have come to look at the Lions as MY team, every Christmas is Lions gear and every phone call goes back to that topic. My fantasy team last year was named “Addition by Subtraction” and I received enormous amount of crap as loss number 10 and 11 came and went.
I love this team, everything they do I reason with my self about why/how it will work. It is getting more difficult, I feel like they are my girlfriend. I break up with them Sunday night, start thinking about them on Monday, call them back Wednesday, get back together on Friday, only to start all over on Sunday.
Sorry about the length. There is more I could write but I’ll stop here.

33 years old and still don't know Shi!
I’ve been watching the Lions since I was 4 years old as well….circa 1980. 29 years with only a few real success stories….
My favorite season was 1991 by far……and I hate the Redskins with a passion (just as much as the Packers, Vikings, Bears, and Buccaneers (yes I still hate them too)). Barry is my all time favorite Lion by far. Wayne Fontes is my all time favorite coach (for now…..Schwartz is winning me over too). No matter where I go, or what I do (if I ever get out of this hole)….I will always be a Lion’s fan. Nobody can take that away from me, and no amount of failure can discourage me. One day, those of us who stood strong in the face of adversity for so long will be rewarded for our perseverance. I long for that day to come. GO LIONS!!!

Was magical, and how much did it rock to get the first victory in over a year against the Redskins?! Barry made me a fan, but the teams of the 90’s made me obsessed. I hate to say it like this, but at this point I just long for the days of yesteryear where Lions fans were discussing whether or not it was still possible to get home field for a playoff game. I still cringe everytime I see Matt Millen’s fat face…“GIVE ME BACK MY MEDIOCRE FRANCHISE”!!!

One of the older ones on the site. I’m from Grand Rapids. I never went to a Lions game at Tiger Stadium, but I remember them. we just stayed home and watched them on TV in GR in my grandpa’s basement every Sunday. Good times. I grew up watching the Lions; that’s why I’m a fan. I remember Lions QB controversies going back to Greg Landry vs. Bill Munson. Others here remember more recent memories. Even rbanner remembers great times from the Lions past. We all have good Lions memories from our days growing up. In a way, rbanner is more like us than unlike us. Ironic, eh?

It looks a lot easier on TV. I’m still not very good, since I’m used to handling a rugby ball, which are slightly bigger. Just keep practicing I say.

Awesome response.
Thanks guys. I was sort of expecting those results. It sounds like the vast majority of the truly obsessed are locals who really experienced the Barry Sanders era, and just kind of stuck around for the ride. There are quite a few more young folks on here then I would have guessed though. It makes me feel good to think that the Lions won’t eventually just lose fans all together. As for those of you older, or even considerably older than I…., you have my heartfelt apologies. Not for you age, but for enduring this circus a lot longer than I’ve had to.

It's been a circus allright
It takes perseverence to endure it for over 40 years. I take it all with a grain of salt. I know that no matter how bad things look now, I’ve seen it all before. In a weird way, that gives me hope. We can rebuild it. I have faith. Even though I share many of the same memories as rbanner, my take on it is different. Things will get better. I suppose I’m the “anti-banner”.

I need a better story.
Back in 8th grade a friend got an electronic pocket dictionary for Christmas (still one of the lamest gifts I’ve ever heard of). Since I got a video game for Christmas, like a normal kid, I brought it down to his house that night. He offered to trade me the pocket dictionary, to which I laughed and asked what the hell it actually did? He informed me that “it corrects spelling.” To which I inquired, “how does it know what you’re trying to spell?” We both decided we had no idea, and after unsuccessfully getting it to guess correct words thought it would be funny to try our names. His name was Rob and the pocket dictionary was convinced we were trying to spell “Rubber”. My name, which will remain anonymous, is a little more original and the pocket dictionary paused for almost a minute before finally spewing out: “Mushy”. Rob found this hilarious and proceeded to call me “Mushy” for the next several days, then weeks, then months…the name stuck with me through college, and some of my friends still don’t know my real first name. Rubber, on the other hand did not seem to last as long?

Late to the party....
Trying to catch up my reading after taking a few nights off… part of my “selling some Lion’s shares” plan.
I’m 34… will be 35 on Dec. 1st. Feel like about 50, though (no offense to the way 50 years olds feel). Like to think I’m getting wiser the older I get, but nope… still a Lion’s fan. Been actively watching since I was probably 10, I would say. So that would have me closing in on a quarter century of misery.
Good post, Mushy. I enjoyed reading everone’s mini-story.

32 yrs old (33 next August)
Born & raised in a small town, Picton Ontario. Moved to Kingston then to the big smoke in Toronto. Started playing football (organized football) in highschool in Kingston. I started out as a QB, but moved to WR based on my wheels & an existing strong arm at QB. Moved to Toronto for 10th grade & continued in football, and pretty much any other sport that didn’t conflict. Ended up averaging over 120yds/game through my senior yr & 1.8 td’s/game. Recruited by three Cdn Universities & Div III central scouting. My dad refused to let me attend central combine due to the fact if I was going to post secondary school it was going to be for school period…even though it was my $$. Went to University at the University of Wester Ontario for Economics. Became a Lions fan…honestly I can’t place the timeline…but I can distinctly remember my step dad playing in his yearly football pool and I watched him week after week making his picks…asking him why he chose teams the way he did. He always chose the Lions…always because they were his Lions. It was just before Barry was drafted. Barry clinched it for me. I was already being brainwashed by the honalulu blue, then Barry added the sparkle. I was and still am honestly in awe. My frustration began with the talk that Emmitt was a better RB. I never bought it, broadcasting that if Barry had the line Emmitt did, not only would we still be watching him run, but he would have set rushing records that would be standing for eternity…especially now in the time of the RB committees. I was a fan of Herman Moore & Mel Gray. I was always facinated by the return game. To this day, I justify my fandom almost daily. Every Monday I describe what went wrong, all the bounces & calls that continue to not go our way…right through to Friday where I muster a following of gamblers to bet again on the Lions beating the spread. That following has become smaller in terms of who bets on the Lions…but I still teach the way of the Lions…teach those that are willing to listen how the Lions can & will win each week. I went to my first game last year vs the Bucs…at which point after the game the notion of 0-16 first came into my head as a possibility…but I continued to share my gameplan on how that wouldn’t happen. Been wrong a lot…but never have I waivered. I will continue to share my teachings…I will continue to bleed honalulu blue…waiting for the day where I can say…that is what I’ve been waiting for, that is what I’ve been talkin about…and everyone I know will think of me when we win. I take pride in sticking with the Lions. I will be there through thick & thin. I will be there when the roar is restored!

The Bandwagon
Unfortunately the bandwagon is something I’ve just had to grow accustomed to. Having watched the Redwings, Tigers, and Pistons go from aweful teams to champions (yes I’m greedily accepting an AL penant as a championship) you will also see the droves of fans that come out of the woodwork…most of whom can barely name the players. My only real complaint comes when they start snatching up the tickets that die-hard fans should have a right to.

This brought out the WWI drill sergeant in him. “Don’t you EVER cheer for the fucking Cowgirls!” I announced this word for word in Sunday School the following week, Mom was not happy…

HOP ON A PLANE AND GO WEST! RIGHT NOW!
You can preserve your youth for a few more hours if you can make it out of this time zone!!
If your plane can make it to the international dateline, then you can either cross over it on your own, or let the new day catch up with you from the east. I don’t know if it would be comforting to delay fate any longer for you, but you can if you want to.
by n4ry4 on Nov 5, 2009 2:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
hmmmm.....
If I keep going west… will it be Nov. 5th for ever?
by CLF on Nov 5, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No
The way I understand it (somebody can correct me if I’m wrong), the International Dateline (runs right down the Pacific Ocean) marks the division between the FIRST timezone to get the new day and the LAST.
If you fly westward out to the International Dateline, you will be able to delay your 30th birthday as long as possible. However, the Sun will still set on your 20’s within a few hours.
If you step OVER the line, it will be Friday already there.
If you wanted to skip right from being 29 and 364 days old, over your birthday, to 30 and 1 day, then go to the International Date Line, wait until 11:59:59 PM, and step west over the line. You will have completely skipped Friday (all but a fraction of a second) and it will be Saturday already. Step back east over the line, and it will be your birthday again.
by n4ry4 on Nov 5, 2009 4:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
in fact,
As I think about it, you may want to cross the line before midnight.
Then you could see what it feels like to be 30 years old, and if you don’t like it, step back east and greedily enjoy your 20’s as long as possible (if even for just a few hours).
Of course, I don’t know if you’d want to waste the last few hours of your 20’s seeing what it’s like to be 30. There are probably better ways to pass the time.

which one will cross the international time line first? LOL!
by KDawg on Nov 5, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Hint
The one going west would cover nearly 300 miles per hour more than the one going east….:o)
by KDawg on Nov 5, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ah heck.....I'll answer it for you guys
I studied these sorts of things when I was an Aviation student out of HS…..
We are in the “Western Date Zone” here in the US. The “Eastern Date Zone” begins just west of Alaska. The Western Date Zone is one day behind the Eastern Date Zone. So if you left Michigan and flew west to cross the International Date Line, once you crossed it you would be a day ahead of home. The Western Hemisphere of Earth is in the “Western Date Zone”. The Eastern Hemisphere is in the “Eastern Date Zone”. No matter if you cross the International Date Line flying east or west, you will be a day ahead of home when you cross it, if you came from the Western Hemisphere, or a day behind home if you came from the Eastern Hemisphere.
The question that I asked above is a trick question that can not be answered…..unless you choose a departure point…..;o)
by KDawg on Nov 5, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So, would this still work, KDawg?
If you wanted to skip right from being 29 and 364 days old, over your birthday, to 30 and 1 day, then go to the International Date Line, wait until 11:59:59 PM, and step west over the line. You will have completely skipped Friday (all but a fraction of a second) and it will be Saturday already. Step back east over the line, and it will be your birthday again.
On second thought I’m thinking it wouldn’t work. The last time zone before the Date Line (the last one that is still “Thursday”) would hit midnight an hour before the Date Line.
It wouldn’t be Saturday West across the IDL until one hour after it had already been Friday East of the IDL for an hour.
So, either he spends part of the last hour of Friday West of the IDL, or the first hour of Friday East of the IDL, but he can’t skip immediately from Thursday to Saturday by stepping across the IDL at 11:59:59 PM, right?
So, happy birthday CLF! You couldn’t have avoided at least one hour the day after all.

Lois having sex with Superman would kill her. Her fallopian tubes wouldn’t be able to handle his orgasm. It would be like a shotgun blast through her back. The ONLY way would be if Superman wore a kryptonite condom, but that would kill him.
The Earths yellow sun is what gives Superman his powers. If Lios Lane did get prego by Superman and just got a simple suntan, with one lil kick in the womb from the baby would blast right through her uterus and basically saw her in half. Only WonderWoman can handle Superman in the sack.

SO Superman was out for his daily rounds, flying above Metropolis scouting for bad guys. While flying over a park, he notices Wonder Woman sprawled out, naked, on a park bench. He watches intently for a few moments before he decides, “What the hell”, and flys in for a quicky. He is in and out before she can even notice what is happening. As he quickly flies away at the speed of sound, his departure causes a sonic boom BOOM as the thunder crashes around Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman, shocked and amazed exclaims “What the hell was that”?!?!?!

Lions fan explanation
Lions games were always blacked out in the mid-to late 1970s, so my brothers and I would listen to the game and play football outside with a little transitor radio. I was always Dexter Bussey, and even though they lost more than they won, they became my team. When Billy Sims came along, with the “Silver Rush”, I thought we’re be the next version of the Steelers. Then my Dad warned me about placing too much faith in the Lions, but I didn’t believe him. I should have listened, but the kid in me would still pay $1 Million bucks just to meet Dexter Bussey now.

Basically, I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t a fan of the Lions. They were the local team, Billy Sims was probably my first sports hero, and…that’s about it. Boring story.

Luck of the draw . . . literally.
I am probably the only native (and current) North Carolinian obsessed with the Lions – never even set foot in MI. I was born in ‘72 and became a Lions fan in ’80 – Sims and Hipple were my early Lions heroes. My dad has been a Cowboys fan since they entered the league, and he tried to raise me to follow suit. I rebelled when I was 6 or 7 and tried to root for the Steelers (after I had watched them win a couple of super bowls). Naturally, the Steelers decision didn’t sit well with my conscience – felt too much like cheating – so I decided to trust fate, shook up my NFL pencils in a bag, closed my eyes and drew the Lions.
Memories of the early 80’s aren’t super clear, but I do recall the Lions winning a big one over my dad’s Cowpokes with a last second field goal – it turned out we had 12 men on the field, but the refs missed it. I remember that being a sweet one. And, like everyone, I had a great time watching Barry do his thing. We then had a GM, whom I will not name, that I had to suffer like the rest of you, but he is gone – I am convinced that it can’t get any worse than what he put is through, which has kept me optimistic as of late. Much better days have to be ahead of us – they just have to.
My friends think I am a nut to be such a dedicated, mislocated fan of a team that has provided very little but heartache over the years. They say I missed my opportunity to bail when the Panthers came to town. No FN way, I always respond – I didn’t pull the Panthers out of that bag of pencils. I’ve spent 29 years out of my 37 rooting for Detroit, and I’m not about to abandon them.
Nope, I’ll just keep getting DTV’s NFL Ticket and making my 2 year old son where his Lions tee on football Sundays – at least until he is old enough to decide to try his own hand at the NFL pencils.
Keep your chin up fellas – there’s always next Sunday. Go Lions!

NFL pencils are on order . . .
Unfortunately, I did not keep my Detroit Lions pencil . . . my guess is it lost to the Redskins in a pencil fight on the school bus back in ’82. Interestingly enough, however, I have recently ordered a full vintage set of NFL pencils just like the ones I had (still in the packages). These pencils will be a key prop in my “Lions Den” sports viewing room that I am putting together in anticipation of a solid season in 2010. Should add a little something to my answer to the question I will have to answer for the rest of my days . . . “Why in the hell exactly do you root for the Lions?”.

I am 46 and I went to see a pre-season game the lions played against the baltimore colts in 1971 , I went to see johnny unitas , but the lions kicked there ass and that was right after they had been in the superbowl ..the game was at michigan univercity , and greg landry was the quaterback …we lived about 200 miles north and it took all day to go , watch the game and get home …within a week I knew all the lions names , and started to collect all their cards , which I still have , with over 5000 more , and my whole basement is a "lions den " with 40 years of lions history on shelves and all over the walls …I even have the full-sized little ceasers barry sanders poster…sorry , I got it bad I guess …including newspaper articles when all the new coaches have been hired and my most recent best item is …a signed charles rogers jersey and the article where matt millen was fired !!!!

Thanks again to everyone for the response.
This post has been up here a while, and I’m actually a little suprised with what now seems like some fairly stagnant results. Basically it looks like there are just as many 30+ fans as there are 29- fans (at least on this site). Maybe it’s just this particular demographic, but I’m very pleased to see that fanhood does not appear to be heading towards a giant gap in age. Hopefully that means fans will be around forever. Now if we could only get some wins!
