Hackerz Evaluation of the Secondary

It seem a lot of people have been talking about the secondary lately, now like I said before I love Eric Berru and i would have no problem with the Lions taking him.  Defensive line is really the problem though, you can put the greatest secondary out there and they still would get torched bc that defensive line cant get any pressure.  Lions cant get any pressure on the QB and that secondary is getting torched, as uch as I love Eric Berry i still wouldnt take him over Ndamukong Suh     DT , Gerald McCoy DT Oklahoma , Russell Okung LT Oklahoma State.

WE CANNOT AFFORD TO IGNORE THE DL OR OL ANY LONGER!!!!!!

If the lions are ever gonna turn around a not just for 1 year but be a playoff contender every year then we have to get better up front.  Thats it, there is no magical formula.    If we wanna win we gotta fix these lines, THATS IT!!!!!!

This is the problem Lions fans have every year they flip flop, Mayhew and Swartz know they have to stay the coarse.  Get a franchise QB get a monster DT or LT and draft well in all the rounds and sign some players along the way.  You gotta be smoking crack if you want the lions to draft a CB with there first round pick, thats insaine.

We just have to stay the Coarse

Well, it all depends

Right now, thinks look like OT/DT/DE. But, there is still a LONG time until the draft, and things change. If I was given the choice, I’d probably go with Suh or Okung.

Guess I should have clarified my stance on a DB in the draft.

As I said in your previous post Hackerz, I have not done any research on the upcoming draft at all. That being said, and taking Kdawgs word that there is not a DB disserving of a first round pick, I would love for the Lions to draft either OL or DL. I think I would prefer stud LT first, but either would be a big help.
I just hope Schwartz has some idea as to how to get some help in the backfield, whether it is through FA or the draft. I certainly wasn’t saying they should just take the best CB on the board in the draft. That has been tried and failed in the past. I also agree with you that better pressure would help in pass coverage but I would like to see some coverage sacks to help out the DL and LBs as well.
Lots of holes to be addressed on this team and based on Schwartzs first off season moves, I am confident he will due a fine job filling some of the needs for the Lions.

Sorry LH

I meant that there is not a DB worthy of a top 10 pick…..including Eric Berry. Charles Woodson was picked 4th by the Raiders in 1998…..and I still do not think his 5 pro bowls (98, 99, 00, 01, and 08) and one 1st team all pro selection in 99 make him worth that much money and such a reach. Yes, he was very good for 4 years in the beginning…..but since then he has only been pro bowl caliber once in 7 years! This is his 12th season, and while he is good I would not put him in the elite category by any means (even in his best years I do not think he was on the level of Deion Sanders even).

If we ended up with an 11-15 pick…..and if Berry were available (not likely) then I would not mind us drafting him. However, being that we desperately need OL and DL….I do not think there is a DB available that deserves us taking him in the top 5. I hope that clears up my stance!

Stance clear

And I totally agree on needing OL and DL help badly. I to was a big lobbiest for picking Curry in the last draft, but like you, have had Staff kind of grow on me. Lets hope the front office will get some help to protect him in the next draft.

Let's be real here

You guys make excellent and valid points on what would be the wise course of action to take for next years draft but come on now…no matter what the needs are going to be by the time next year’s draft comes around, you know damn well that with such a juicy draft pick once again, they are going to be blinded by whatever fancy high profile player will be available! Old man Ford is going to be desperate to sell tix by next year, and they are going to need a name to sell

On that note…I agree that OL or DL is their best bet, and they should truly honestly spend every single one of their picks on DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE (or beefy linemen)

Don't know if I agree with the high profile pick to sell tickets.

They are dishing out a ton of money to Staff already. Paying 2 high profile players at the same time might leave the till short on signing other needs. I could really see them trading out of the top 5, get an extra pick or two, and save some cash all in one shot. Just a thought.

or resigning stars...or the star we have in cj

his contract will not be cheap to renew!

by londonlion on Nov 5, 2009 9:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

At the same time

We don’t really have anybody else (besides CJ) coming out of the Millen era who is due for a big contract extension or else we might lose them.

by n4ry4 on Nov 5, 2009 2:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey, maybe it was all an evil plot by Millen to keep us under the salary cap......

Maybe Millen drafted worthless bums on purpose so we wouldn’t have to pay them big-money contract extensions. Brilliant! (OK, maybe not……….)

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Nov 5, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thats if he decides to resign with us

I know if I was CJ I would look for an escape from this team if they do not start addressing our major needs. Ideally as much as I loathe Sack Us I would draft all Defense. Our Dline sucks so bad that we very rarely get any real pressure and thats even when we blitz. Our corners suck. The only bright spots on defense are Foote, Levy and Delmas aside from that the rest of them can go as far as I’m concerned. Scratch that, Hunter was looking solid before he got hurt and Hill gets some push occasionally but aside from those names the rest can go IMO. Granted our Oline sucks and I hate it but what can we do? We can’t fix everything in 1 year.

I still wish we wouldn’t of gotten Grew, I think we wasted that 1st round pick. I have not been impressed with him at all. Get some sticky tape for his hands bc he can’t catch a ball to save his life. Too late to bitch too much now and we’re stuck with him so they better do somthing about that guy and his receiving abilities.

by Usmarine0341 on Nov 5, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Load up 'Grew's hands like Clifford Franklin in "The Replacements"

I want that ball to stick to his hands so much he has to pry it off with his foot after he scores a TD.

I’ll never think about elephants the same way again.

I agree

Glad to see you say that Hacker…..we must fix the lines if we ever want to win.

Neon Dion

I don’t think anyone is on the same level with Dion.

Not many

But Champ Bailey, Ronnie Lott (yes he played corner too), Darrell Green, and Rod Woodson were all in the same category. I would say that Rod Woodson is the only CB in the history of the NFL (unless you think of what Ronnie Lott would have done if he had played his entire career at CB) that was better than Deion Sanders. My knock on Deion is that he couldn’t tackle a scarecrow…..

A poor choice of players I guess…..I just didn’t think before I posted. However, I still say that only ELITE DBs (corners or safeties) should be drafted in the top 10…..and with the draft being such a crap shoot, who knows what you will get? My opinion is that pretty much any DB is a reach in the top 10…..unless he is Deion Sanders, Rod Woodson, Ronnie Lott, Darrell Green, or Champ Bailey…..and I don’t think Berry can hold their jocks.

by KDawg on Nov 5, 2009 6:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

maybe not...

but people played craps on them too. and you can’t tell me, if it worked out, you wouldn’t love to have two young shut down safeties back there? talk about the future of a defense to build in front of!

by londonlion on Nov 5, 2009 7:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It would be nice.....

I just think that games are won and lost in the trenches, and I think it is risky no matter who you decide to take. However, say you have guys like Eric Berry, Okung, and Gerald McCoy (for lack of better examples) all available at pick 5. Now you have to decide which one you need the most and which one is the least risky. My opinion is that Okung is the least risky at this point, but maybe LT is not the greatest need in the minds of Mayhew and Co. Maybe they think a DT is the greater need. If you ask me, Okung or Berry would be better choices than McCoy…..but I would hate to see the Lions draft a safety in the top 5 picks. Do we take the BPA based on our greatest need (McCoy), or do we take the BPA based on need, regardless of what our greatest need is (or what it is perceived as)?

I think it is sad that every single GM that gets the job in Detroit continues to think that Backus can get the job done. I am tired of the Lions NOT drafting a book end LT when they have the opportunity. Backus should be moved to LG, backup, or cut….and I don’t care how much he is paid or how big the cap hit is. He is a huge liability as a LT. If you look at Backus’s performance this season, and compare it to Marquand Manuel and Ko Simpson combined……where is the greater need? Manuel and Simpson have done a good enough job, and this draft will be deep at the safety position. So why not take the greater need at LT or DT based on the depth of those 2 positions, who is available when we pick, and who the BPA between those positions is?

My logic beings me right back to Okung…..:o)

by KDawg on Nov 5, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

good point

and i agree okung/berry would be bpa at that spot. i just can’t shake the pictures of ap breaking bullocks (i think it was him last year) ankles at the 10yrd line & going in for a score…same kind of thing with sjack last weekend…and forte…two playmaking safeties provide a fantastic last line of defense. i have been very happy especially with manuel…simpson i think plays second fiddle there…but he’s been good too. that being said, perhaps those backs wouldn’t have reached that level if okung was up the middle…i get that…but we are also killed on the deep ball. i don’t know, i’d be fine with either…just love the idea of a young tandom back there for years to come. solid play at the safety allows front seven to apply more pressure which i think is something gunn wants to do too…

Once again, it all comes down to the fact that we have too many substantial holes

To be honest, I’d be happy with OT/DT/DE/CB/S with our first pick. We have big holes at those positions which are in desperate need of elite talent. I’ll probably have a favourite or two come draft season, but right now, those are the positions I’m favouring.
