Week 12 Trivia  (ANSWER)

Dear POD'ers:

Visiting my parents in Utica, NY this holiday my father remarked how truly amazed he is that I have stuck with our beloved Lions after all these dreadful years (I had worn all my Lions gear, as I do every Thanksgiving, for the game against the hated Packers).  After all, it was he who took me to a Detroit Lions training camp in the summer of 1977 looking to entertain a needy, bratty, highly energetic young kid (my father was in the Air Force and travelled quite a bit).  Needless to say I fell in love immediately, the players, the uniforms, the colors, the Lions logo, etc.

Anyway, I have always had a fondness for the 1977 Detroit Lions team - I think of it as my base year for my fandom (I was 4 years old at the time).

ANSWER:  The placekicker was Steve Mike-Mayer.  He also had a brother who had a more succesful career in the NFL as a kicker Nick Mike-Mayer.  Doug English was a Lions DE, Dexter Bussey was a Lions RB and Leonard Thompson was a WR with the Lions (remember him and Freddie Scott??   LOL)

Being a Lions fan defies all logic, but I love it. I can’t remember how many times I have seen the Lions snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but I still keep coming back for more. Every year I get excited about the differences this year.

I am rarely this excited, this late in a season – especially with this poor of a record. For some reason I still think these Lions are different and that we are finally moving in the right direction. I hope I am not delusional – I will be a fan regardless, but it would be nice to cheer for the team at the top for a change (and be able to celebrate more wins each season).

If you only cheer for a team when it is on top, you are not a true fan. I tend to despise those fans who cheer for America’s Team (whoever that happens to be at the time – Dallas, Patriots, etc . . .). I love hearing about how you got your start as a Lions fan, it makes me feel less crazy.

Thanks for your posts and your trivia (although I should get more of these right – I have been alive for longer, a fan for as long, but a die hard for much less time than you apparently).

I was only a year old in 1977

So, I do not remember who the kicker was for the 77 team…..

I do know that Eddie Murray took over as the Lion’s kicker in 1980, and he went to the pro bowl and was first team all pro in his rookie year.

Pretty much what I did.

I knew 2 of them and heard of one other but don’t know much him. So I picked the one I knew nothing about. LOL.
