Friday Notes: FitzSimmons Misses Practice; Gronkowski to Get His Shot at TE on Sunday?

  • Dan Gronkowski may get a chance to play tight end on Sunday because Casey FitzSimmons is suffering from concussion-like symptoms.  FitzSimmons missed Thursday's practice, and if he is unable to play, Gronkowski will see his first regular season action at tight end.  Quite a few friends and relatives of Gronkowski will be at the game since he played college football at the University of Maryland, so it would be pretty cool if he got to play at TE this week.
  • Ernie Sims could return against Baltimore.
  • Louis Delmas and DeAndre Levy have the third- and fourth-most tackles, respectively, out of all the NFL's rookies.
  • Gunther Cunningham loves Levy.
  • Kalvin Pearson was back at practice on Wednesday and should play this week.
  • There was some talk that the Lions might bring in a few punters for a workout in case Nick Harris is too injured to play this week, but considering I haven't heard anything about a tryout yet and that no punter has been signed, I'd imagine that Harris will play.
  • Some Lions players shared their thoughts on who should win the Heisman Trophy.
  • Chris Spielman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this week.
  • Chad Ochocinco was fined $30,000 for the sombrero celebration he did during last Sunday's Lions-Bengals game.

I know from watching Hard Kocks

That supposedly “Chad whateverthehellhisnameistoday” is cheap, buying fake sun glasses from thrift stores yada yada. But to give $30K to the NFL, (knowing this because he stated before the game last week that he was going to be fined) is rediculous. I wish these guys realized what $30,000.00 would do for a laid off family. Give me a break. And did you hear he wants to change his name again, to something korean. Haichi Go, i think it was.

Gratz to Spielman, what a class act. Love his heart.

Not so sure why Sims is on everybodys shit list. The guy was productive for us, and played all the games he was supposed to the past 2 years. I doubt he will be moved this off season, were more than likely to see JP go to a contender for draft picks. Sims hasnt turned heads this year, but I believe he deserves every opportunity to prove himself. I like Levy, I really do but he’s performing like Sims in his rookie year. Producing, and we need to give him a shot to return to form. Who knows how long he has been injured?

The fines...

I’m pretty sure the fines the players of today pay go into a pot for the medical bills of former players.

Not sure about the Sims talk either...

…but I say keep him. Whether it’s Levy or Sims going forward is less important than having some depth finally at a key position. I doubt we’d get much in a trade for him anyway…

Too bad it’s going to take some time to build up that depth at other positions. After all the injuries this year, it’s painfully obvious that it is this teams #1 weakness that must be addressed in the next two years.

Just livin' the dream...

+1

Sims will benefit from a much improved D-Line in 2009. Remember when Shaun Rogers was here?? Sims was a beast with someone taking up space in the middle.

It will be good to see Gronk get a shot

He may surprise us. I have also been surprised by Delmas and Levy’s contributions to the team, they are a major bright spot for this team.

I agree

I’m happy to see Big Dan get a shot.

And speaking of concussions, here's to not getting one

I took a puck to the head tonight (didn’t even get the damn thing, so much fail) and have a nice shiner. Let’s hope that’s all I get.

Caught you with your head down, eh ?

Were you playing or watching a Dead Things game ? Now, those guys are tough. In high school, I took a stick to the face, ending up with a broken nose and thirteen stitches. Luckily, my grill is intact. Would love to see Louis Delmas on skates slamming people. Hope your O.K. !

I was just watching the goalie because I assumed the play was going in the other direction

Not so much. Still don’t understand how it suddenly went in my direction.
