Everyone Needs to Relax (Again)
Sorry guys, but I feel a post like this is necessary every once in a while. Being the contrarian that I am, I try to play devil's advocate and see the silver lining in things, especially those related to my football team.
Ok. We're 2-11. Big surprise. Raise your proverbial hand here if you really thought the Lions were going to be competitive in every single game, save face after last year, and redeem themselves. How many blowouts have we seen this year? 3? I don't really do a lot of homework when I post, so forgive my point of view.
We have one of the most injured squads in the league. We basically cut the fat off of an obese roster, and now after our gastric bypass, we're left with skin and bones. Everyone needs to lay off a little bit. I know as Lions fans we're all extremely passionate and tired of losing, but shit guys. Everyone is ALREADY getting on the 'WTF Schwartz' bus, and we're not even done with his first season. Christs sake, cut the guy a little slack. I don't care what coach we got in here this year, we weren't going to be any better than we are right now.
Our players have played to their expectations, aside from a few exceptions. Calvin has had nagging injuries and is in a down year. Stafford has played like a very good rookie QB should play, spotty but with flashes of brilliance. Grew has turned heads and given us something to be hopeful for, and our defense has been playing like shit. The offensive line is, to be kind, subpar. Out of all those sentences and statements, which of those has really caught anyone off guard?
I know no one wants to see a game that gets to fucking 48-3. You folks do realize that the Tennessee Titans, who went 13-3 last year, not only started out 0-6 but got beat by something like 57-0, right? Every week teams good and bad get blown out. The point I'm trying to make is:
SHIT HAPPENS. THIS IS THE NFL.
I watch the game with my Dad every Sunday, and his negativism has really caused me to be much more positive about this team. Sure I get pissed off when we're getting our asses handed to us just as much as anyone, but all the Kool-Aid dried up. This is reality, and as much as it sucks to see in action, we most certainly have a bright future ahead of us. Jim Schwartz has not been our coach for an entire calendar year yet. I know we're all butthurt after the parade of retards that have comprised the 'leadership' of our team, but getting pissed because you wanted front office changes to equal wins in one year is craziness.
Let's watch a young team develop and stay behind our new coach and players like real fans. If this was 2 years from now and the season looked this way, I'd understand. I've long been a skeptic of our fanbase. We're so far past being able to get our hopes up about the team that people just abandon ship when things get shitty (which is usually). We gotta give our boys a chance. Stay positive. I might be speaking to a wall, but that's just how I feel.

2x no panic here… the ship will be righted
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
I don't think there's anything wrong with getting rightly upset at bad calls
Schwartz is really testing my faith. It’s not that we’re 2-11. It’s stuff like:
- Promising accountability (“beyond benching”) on Sunday, and the backing off the next day, saying “no roster moves are planned”.
- Applying accountability inconsistently. Aaron Brown makes one dumb play on a return, and he’s replaced with Derrick Williams immediately. Culpepper sucks it up for four quarters, but the #2 QB job seems to be his birthright.
- Keeping our starters in the game after it’s a blowout. Hey, whaddaya know, our starting RB is now out for the season and possibly part of next!
I see what you’re saying in this post, Nate D, but I think there’s a difference between fans being perpetually negative on the team, and fans calling shit quality what it is and expecting something better next week.
I agree with both you and Nate for the most part, n4ry4
We do need to chillax a bit and many of us have been preaching patience and expectations all year long. I think it’s very important to be realistic about what this team boasts talent-wise and realize what Schwartz has to work with… and it ain’t much. He needs time and talent, but I still believe he is the right man for the job. That said…..
He’s made some questionable calls the last few weeks. He is not above reproach. He has to be able to explain and stand by the decisions that he makes and I believe it’s well within a fan’s prerogative to question the direction of the team when it appears off course.
Rarely do I not take a side, but both of you make a lot of sense. I think we as fans need to find a balance between giving patience and wanting accountability. Schwartz still gets the benefit of the doubt from me on his decisions. Like I said in another post, he is the football guru… not me. I think most fans still feel that way. He’s just getting frustrated like us and he realizes there are no more straws to grasp. What an empty feeling that has to be. Wait… we all know that feeling… actually, all too well.
Just call me Nate
I dont see any other Nate’s on the site, haha…
I have a small problem with your third point. I heard people saying that we should have pulled all our starters and blaming that for the reason Kevin got hurt. I dont get that logic AT ALL.
Since when do you not play to the whistle? Yes I realize that there was absolutely no way whatsoever that we’d win that game, but would you have been that much more happy to see our coach and team TRULY throw the towel in and give up? That’s weak, and part of changing the culture here is playing through games you know you’re going to lose. A fucking loser walks off the field when they can’t win anymore.
Kevin Smith got injured on a totally freak play. That’s the entirety of it. It was no one’s fault, except god.
I blame god for all of the Lions’ problems.
lol

I'm a pretty optimistic person
So, I’m not to worried, sure, the losing sucks, but I’m used to it, life goes on.

You are as even keel as they come HE
This decade has been horrendous…………..if the trough was last year our upward projection (via the W column) in at about a 3.4 degree angle. Must remain patient.

I am with you Nate.
I still have a ton of faith that Schwartz will get us on the winning path. Its just going to take time. Yes he screamed accountability and all, but what do you do with 3 games left. I have a feeling there will be alot of releases come the end of the season. After seeing his rant on the sidelines and watching him over the season, I can see that he wants this team to succeed. it will take some time for him to get the right guys in here to make that happen.
