Retroactive mock draft??

Sports Illustrated every year puts out an article of how the first round of the past year's draft should have gone, based on the info we've learned from the season to date.  As Detroit fans, we should be proud to know that of the Lions draft last year (which I think we'd all agree has been largely successful so far), SI has declared that four players should have actually been first round picks.  Matthew Stafford of course was there (although they had him at no. 2, saying that Oher should have gone no. 1.  Hard to argue with that), and Brandon Pettigrew stayed put at no. 20.  But Louis Delmas cracked the first round, getting "picked" by the Broncos at 18, and surprise starter DeAndre Levy was "picked" at no. 30 by the Titans.  I know that media praise isn't nearly as satisfying as wins, but it's sure nice to see that with the benefit of hindsight, the Lions 2009 draft looks to have been one of the best in the league.

Here's the article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/don_banks/12/15/redraft/index.html

I'll argue about picking Oher over Stafford at # 1

Can you imagine a season with Daunte as our starting QB?

Oher has been good, but not worth the #1 pick. Vollmer has been the best rookie O lineman with some consideration due Alex Mack too. Maybe if they had a movie made of their lives they would get more props.

true

I guess it is pretty arguable. It comes down to a future of Oher and Bradford/McCoy or Stafford and Okung/Suh/the other McCoy. There’s the other consideration of if we had drafted Oher, the lions would have saved probably $10 mil. But that’s not my money, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Now if you want to argue about who we should have picked at #20...........

The only problem with that would have been where do we put the guy? Maybe he works out at Left Guard for a year or two, who knows?

As I said before, I think the coaching staff made a decision that the O line might be serviceable this year and would be helped more by a very strong blocking TE. We had too many gaping holes to fill in one year.

@ 20

I wanted Max Unger or Alex Mack very badly.

I love Grew but we would have benefited greatly from having one of those guys, as they both could have played G.

I will to.

I would rather have Stafford and entire OLine of Backus’ than been forced to watch Daunte for an entire season. I hate him so much. I wish we had a backup that could mentor rather than pout because he wasn’t playing. If only Kitna hadn’t turned into a lunatic and acted like he did when he was at Cincy we would have had that guy.

Have faith in Schwartz/Mayhew, we will find our OLine and fix the D.

oher

we could of picked him with the 20th pick

um

I am not a huge fan of 12-gauge, but Man Missile seems a bit homoerotic.

Hilarious!!

agreed, I can’t call my favorite player “man-missile”.

DAMN!!!

There is one vote for Derrick Williams. that’s me. I thought the question was what was the biggest BUST in the ’09 draft class. Sorry

My real vote: STAFF

I voted Levy

that was a great pick. I was pissed at first (an OLB???!!!! WTF!!!) but he has been damn good.
I almost picked Sammie. I was not expecting squat from him at all this season, but he is turning into a very solid player

by JazzyBBP on Dec 16, 2009 10:20 AM EST reply actions

I voted Levy also.

With the contributions he has made to this team already and the spot we got him at I think that is the best value. To have a 3rd round pick come in and play that good is awesome. We got a first round player for sure with 3rd round money. That pick was a steal. I also think looking back now anyone could make an argument that Delmas is a top 5-10 pick kind of player. I think we got really good value with him too.

by toled0lions on Dec 16, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

no one for grew yet?? i think i am the only one that loved that pick when we maid it.. before we started hearing about players and seeing them play and what not he was my favorite pick.. as said as that may sound

Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??

by det32 on Dec 16, 2009 12:57 PM EST reply actions

I loved the Grew pick too

but it’s hard to rationalize now that he was a better value than Oher or even Maualuga. He’s a great player at a luxury position.

by sgdbw90 on Dec 17, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

I voted Levy

Staff, Delmas and even Grew met my expectations for the season, they were picked high and they played fairly well at times. However, Levy I didn’t think much of before the season and the way he has come along has been great, that’s why he gets my vote.

by Hyperion Ecta on Dec 16, 2009 7:56 PM EST reply actions

Hmm...I'm one of the two people that voted for Hill

Staff, Pettigrew, and Delmas really doesn’t deserve the vote b/c they were high draft picks, and although Levy has played well, I would still say Hill is the biggest surprise. He came straight from a D2 school and into a NFL starting lineup and has played fairly well…well enough that now we consider our line to only need three more starters instead of four

The beginning of the end of the misery

by latif on Dec 16, 2009 8:00 PM EST reply actions

hmmm

I love that we got a starter that late in the draft, but our d-line has been AWFUL this year. I don’t think I can rationalize giving anyone on that line any praise.

by sgdbw90 on Dec 17, 2009 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

I was another for Hill

for similar reasons. You don’t expect a rookie starter on day one from a 7th round pick. Sure, he probably wouldn’t have been a starter on a better team, but he was still a steal.

by ATL Lion on Dec 28, 2009 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

he was a 4th rounder
