Around SBN: Dan Marino Starting College For Developmentally Disabled

I don't have time for a full story (thank you, finals), but here is a rundown of some changes the Lions have made to their roster:

Activated running back Cedric Peerman from practice squad to replace Kevin Smith
Claimed cornerback/kick returner Brian Witherspoon (from Jacksonville)
Signed tight end Michael Matthews

No word yet on the two players who are being taken off the active roster to make room for Witherspoon and Matthews.

UPDATE: Matthews will be taking Casey FitzSimmons' spot on the roster, as FitzSimmons was placed on IR today.

…..best kick returner we will have had all year.

I really liked Witherspoon in Jacksonville

That guy is super fast, but he doesn’t take contact and keep moving. I really think he can run one back, but he needs to let his blockers make the blocks before he passes by. I’m glad he got a spot with the Lions. He really is exciting.

He may be 4.16 fast, but when you run into 4.16 defenders, you go nowhere, Fast. Cant say Im too excited about any of these bums.

claification...

Widen your margins and trim down the sides of the paper so that if the prof measures them they are still right. Chances are he won’t actually measure the width of the actuall text. Bind it with the correct size paper for the cover sheet and back to hide the trimed width and BINGO, with creative paragraphs and some crazy vocab, you can prolly add a page or two out of a 8 or 9 pager.

Unfortunately.

Most employers aren’t paying for knowledge…but they do want to see that piece of paper that says “I am a kid with parents with too much money”.

Pretty much

I probably will learn very little that relates to my future job, but I can’t get said job without that piece of paper.

And FTR, POD is actually helping me pay for college, so might want to cut the stereotype that everybody at college is loaded.

IR List

Well as of Wednesday morning we now have the longest IR list again this year at 16 players, Buffalo has 15, 12 teams have 5 or fewer with Minnesota haveing only 1 player.

Depth

For a team that already started way too thin in talent, this just keeps getting better and better. They might as well shut Calvin down at this point too. How far we’ve fallen!

Update on the Lions cut/roster moves

“The team also claimed cornerback/returner Brian Witherspoon off waivers and released cornerback Jahi Word-Daniels, though Witherspoon wasn’t on the field for the early portion of Wednesday’s practice.

The Lions released linebacker Danny Lansanah from their practice squad and filled two empty practice squad slots by re-signing receiver Eric Fowler, who cleared waivers after being released by the team Saturday, and adding free agent defensive tackle Terrance Taylor (Michigan).:

Does anyone really think we should trade Calvin?

He’s got talent and ability that we can’t replace even with a number of draft picks. If we can get some more pieces, he’s one of very few difference makers in this league. You cannot let those guys get away. It’s not like he’s a 6 or 7 year vet that’s known nothing but losing, he’s a third year guy that was brought here to turn this franchise around and he should be given the full length of his contract to try to do that.
As Bill Simmons said recently on the Lions Thanksgiving game, “When the Lions are finally good again, those suddenly competitive Thanksgiving games will be extra sweet. You will appreciate them more. This might not happen until 2053, but still. You will appreciate them more. Ever been to a wedding where the couple waited to have sex until they got married, and when they’re slow-dancing late during the reception, the groom looks as though he’s going to spontaneously combust? That will be us on Thanksgiving when the Lions are good again. You wait.”
I feel the exact same way about Calvin, giving him up would be like giving up the Thanksgiving game. Coming from a fan of a losing team, I’ve gotta say, giving up is worse than the losing seasons. In a few years when Calvin is racking up pro bowls, we’re going to be thankful he’s doing it in a Lions Uniform.

No

Vikings fan here.

You should not trade Calvin Johnson. You don’t trade your best players. You build your team around them.

Just keep supporting Jim Schwartz. He is making the right moves. I guarantee you the Lions will not trade Calvin Johnson or Matthew Stafford or a few other key building-block players while Schwartz is around. This is because Schwartz is smart.

by DINORDO on Dec 16, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

Calvin is a top 3 receiver (andre johnson, larry fitz 1 and 2 in my opinion), and as such is much more valuable than the solid but unspectacular guys we would get with the draft picks we trade him for. Roy Williams was a glorified possession receiver and we were definitely smart to trade him but there’s no way we get proper value for megatron.

I don't know if anyone else knew this..

I only do because I live in MD and have seen cedric peerman when he played for Virginia..but in the combine he had the best 40 for a RB AND did the most bench presses for a RB…thats impressive if nothing else.

He would be free to join the Lions. The Lions could use another receiver. Maybe Purify could help.

Big mistake?

Bills add Richie Incognito
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 16, 2009 5:30 PM ET
The Buffalo Bills have acquired guard Richie Incognito, a day after he was placed on waivers by the St. Louis Rams.

Incognito was let go after getting two personal fouls in the Rams’ loss to the Tennessee Titans and getting into a verbal confrontation with coach Steve Spagnuolo on the sidelines.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Dolphins also put in a waiver claim for Incognito, but the Bills get him because they have a worse record. Dolphins front office boss Bill Parcells said when he was hired that he didn’t want “thugs and hoodlums” on his team. Apparently he doesn’t think Incognito is either.

Until he was waived on Tuesday, Incognito had spent his entire five-year career with the Rams. He started nine games for St. Louis this season.

I guess we will see if Detroit not getting Incognito was a good one or not?

Dino keeps speaking!!!

The Bills needed a G as much as we did .. maybe more.. the difference? they said “what the hey lets take a chance”… a stop gap till the area can be addressed in the draft in a few years if they do not like him … as I said they (the Bills) can now focus on the more important areas of the draft which could have been Detroit…. i’ll watch what he does in Buffalo if he does well like Benson in Cincy.. theys another free pick we could have had to fix us sooner…. bummer..

If he does not pan out there then I’ll eat my words.. as I did with Shaun Smith .. he was let go by Cincy…

here’s the link for Incognito

I may? eat my words

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/12/16/kawika-mitchell-sounds-off-on-incognito/

This guy DOES have a bad rap in the NFL from the statement from Mitchell…. he (Ritchie)could change yes… he got his chance in Buffalo.. too many issues for the Lions… I’m sold now…. DONE I’ll move on

the pickup of Roy Schuening makes total sense… most on the current Lions roster are fighting for a j0b for 2010 now, clearly the draft picks will eat into this roster and purge the crap out of it to one day have a talented team.. till then all we can do is watch the improvements. if Jim and Mayhew have a draft as good as last year.. then the Lions will rise out of the doldrums of NFL teams!!!! Count on it!

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

Incognito was like this in college too

I think he’s actually the one who injured Drew Stanton in the Alamo Bowl. Granted, Stanton should have never been covering punts, but IIRC it was a cheap hit.

Terelle Smith cut

Sort of surprising, because I personally thought he was decent, but we really don’t need two fullbacks on the team anyways. Good to see the vote of confidence for Felton.
