Ask Revenge of the Birds
Greetings, Pride of Detroit. It's time to renew an "old-school" rivalry between the Cardinals and Lions this week and I'd like to take this opportunity to open up the "post" to any questions you may have in regards to the '09 Arizona Cardinals. I'm sure some of the good folks from Revenge of the Birds will be stopping by to chime in as well as game day approaches.
As many of you may know, the Cardinals and Lions have a long tradition in the NFL and were once divisional foes from 1934 through 1949. Those years were kinder to the Lions as they finished with a better record for all but five of those rivalry seasons with most of those better Cardinals seasons coming during the Million Dollar Backfield days of the late '40's. With a change of division structure — Detroit moved to the West Division and Chicago to the East Division even though Chicago is west of Detroit (clearly the NFL's geography deficiencies go back generations!) — the teams would not face each other again until 1961 in St. Louis. Sporadic pairings over the years stopped when the NFL's '02 realignment allowed our perennial underachieving teams to play almost annually. The Cardinals visited Detroit three years in a row from '03 to '05, all Detroit victories. In fact, the Cardinals haven't won in Michigan since November 1st, 1998 when the Jake Plummer-led Cardinals overcame Barry Sanders' 107 yards rushing and won 17-15.
The Cardinals come into Week 15 somewhat reeling from their fumble fest on Monday Night Football against the 49ers. The Lions would like to put their pasting at the hands of the Ravens behind them as well. The Cards are playing for their second consecutive NFC West divisional crown Sunday with an eye on the Eagles/49ers score. The Lions are playing for pride and performance. How will the teams fare? "Any given Sunday" is a hackneyed phrase but clearly applies to this game, a "trap" game I would have professed before Monday's results. I suspect that the Cardinals will be practicing hard and will be out to prove themselves against a battered foe.
I wish the best for the Lions and I hope each team comes out of the game as healthy as they entered it. I look forward to that Lions/Cardinals NFC Championship game in the (perhaps near?) future. 'ell, if the Buccaneers can win the Super Bowl and the Cardinals can nearly win one, anything is possible, right?

Be Nice...
I like it when other moderators and contributors do this.
Let’s all be polite and not let yesterdays indiscretions carry over to today.
Thanks for the History Hawkwind, checkout the “Trade Calvin” post if you are curious to what I referred to above.
Anyway, My only question, and I don’t intend this to be rude… Is how can you look sooooo good against the Vikings one week, and so bad against SF the next? How much confidence do you have in Kurt Warner after that game?
No worries, tried finding the old Jake Plummer United Way commercial to poke fun at the Cards to break the ice...
…but YouTube doesn’t have it.
Let’s see, seven turnovers by any team and it’s hard to come out looking good. The fact that the 49ers could only put up 24 points says something…not much, but something. Ball control has been a concern of Tim Hightower and Chris Wells all season and Monday’s game was something of a perfect storm of fumbles. It was ugly. Throw in a couple of INTs by Warner and it’s a mess.
On the reverse side, the Vikings game there was the initial Hightower fumble and then a clean game by the Cards with their defense forcing the Vikings into mistakes.
What are the differences? You can throw out any number of theories (high profile game vs. division rival) but the fact is the Cardinals still fall victim to their own inconsistencies of effort and excecution. They still tend to “play down” to the competition, not that the Niners are an inferior team, and that’s why the Lions game is of some concern to me. Getting whooped by the Niners ought to wake the team up though.
Kurt Warner has the coaches’ confidence and that’s all that matters. Warner is one these QBs that will have one game out of eight that are down right stinkers (Carolina is a prime example). Warner was not necessarily bad against the Cardinals but the 49ers where good in applying pressure to him without blitzing, clearly Warner’s biggest weakness. All the credit goes to the 49ers, just like the credit should go the Cards’ defense against Favre the week before. Warner is a diligent and smart football player and will practice and work to have his offense performing on all levels against the Lions (sans Fitzgerald, potentially).
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
Have to agree..
plus of all the places I have visited as an opposing fan, Arizona fans, by far, have treated me the nicest. No threats on my life or ten year old telling me to f*ck off like in Chicago, nobody pissing on my car like in St. Louis, nobody throwing stuff at me like in LA. Just fans enjoying an absolutely terrible game of football and recommending a good place to get a drink…plus the free buses between the parking lots and stadium are really cool there.
Try a game in Oakland sometime.
That’s a treat! Even with a Pat Tillman jersey on I had enough food thrown at me to feed a family for a week.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
Oh I didn't mean anything by it
I’m just sulking in Detroit’s ass kicking from last week…
If I was REALLY pissed off he would have known it! It’s all good…
Go Lions!
Just livin' the dream...
The mental image of birds harrassing a lion took away any seriousness of the comment.
Shellackings of the sort the Lions experienced last week suck, but personally I’d rather have my arse handed to me on a platter than lose on last second play on a drive where multiple fourth downs are converted. No, I’m not bitter. *cough*Titans*cough* At least the talk of Vince Young being the second coming of Jesus Christ have subsided.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
Yeah
I think most people saw you were being humorous there, I was really just chiming in to let our Cardinals fan know I liked his crowd when I was there.
Thanks for your comments!!
I’m really really scared about this game because of how AZ played against SF on Monday night. I was hoping they saved that horrible game for us (they seem to have 1 or 2 every year like this. I recall the game vs. the Giants in 2008 when they had 5 turnovers and lost badly). But……………………any given Sunday!!
Good luck to your team as well but I hope the Lions win!!

I made the mistake of looking past SF and calling wolf on the Lions as a trap game
I think that is less likely but still possible. The Cards have trouble in Michigan, don’t know why, they just do.

Just don't make fun of Det32's spelling

How bad of an asskicking can we expect this week?
I’m def starting Fitz and Arizonas DEF in FFB. Should I start Beanie over Thomas Jones or Ricky Williams?
Think the Rams and Bucs can win another so we have a better shot at “A Boy Named Suh”?
This isn't a "lay-up" game and any Cards fan thinking that is a fool (especially after last week's game)
The Cards will come out focused, certainly. I’d expect to see more of Wells this week than Hightower. Monitor Fitzgerald’s knee situation; a bone bruise may be enough to have the coaching staff sit him and give Jerhame Urban some time in uniform on a Sunday. Considering the caution they had with Anquan Boldin’s hamstring issue earlier in the season (vs. Chicago), Fitz getting the game off is likely unless he’s is a better lobbyist.
Tampa could beat the ’Hawks this week or even the Falcons in the last week, but the Rams are screwed.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
you think the nfl will let us use baseball bats??
only way we wil stop fitz and bold
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
You say that...
But you don’t know what it’s been like every week for us…
Every team thinks that we might surprise them… trust me. We won’t.
Hahaha
+1
Nate’s right. No surprises here. We will not win. No chance. A competitive game I am hoping for but with Fatty CPep in the line up we won’t score.

Maybe he can stand like a statue and let Adrian Wilson get a sack...
…so his quest to join the 20-20 Club will finally be over.
Scott Mitchell > Daunte Culpepper?
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
Tell Adrian to hit Fatty HARD and OFTEN
We want to see Drew Stanton so bad. Not that we think Drew is the second coming of Joe Montana its just CPep is that bad. People think we have a love affair with Stanton - we don’t. We have a HATE AFFAIR with CPep. Watching him play with this team has made me want to vomit. You will see first had Sunday. God help the Lions.

I want to vomit in Culpepper's shoes
We really do hate him.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
It's gonna be ugly....
What a week to play the Cards….
Don’t worry, Teams like to use the Lions to bounce back.
I see Warner throwing for 350+… with his eyes closed.
A bounce-back game would be nice...
…and two would be better before the Packers come to town. Still, Detroit plays well and the Cards repeat their SF performance and who knows?
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
don't worry, even leinart will look pro bowl ready after sunday
so imagine what warner will look like!
That shouldn't be hard, especially if Delmas is out
No pass rush to speak of, no run blocking, no secondary.
Jason Hanson can’t hit the side of a barn anymore (God love him but he might think about retirement after this season)
Oh, and it looks llke Culpecker will start again so the offense won’t be putting up any points.
Another blowout for Detroit.

Well, maybe an early lead by the Cards will send in Leinart and the back-ups
Anything is possible then.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
Sure
Could be 41-3 by halftime. Tell Leinart to be ready to play.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
+100000
CLF is dead on there. I think it’s gonna be a reenactment of Payton vs Lions thanksgiving 3 years ago. UGLY!!!

Off-Topic But Cards Related
Where do you think Anquan is going in the offseason?
My personal prediction – Baltimore.
only against pocket aces
Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson
Boldin is signed through '10 so strictly speaking...
…he’s in Arizona next year.
Now if you’re talking about the Cardinals moving him via a trade and where would that be, it won’t be in the Division and most likely not even in the Conference. Baltimore and Jacksonville were my guesses last draft and Baltimore still has a lot of needs at WR. Come on by RotB around March and the “What to do about Anquan” mental masturbation will be fully lubed up.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
thats funney
mental masturbation will be fully lubed up.
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
When the present reality sucks...
…pondering a better future is all you’ve got. Trust me, I can empathize as a Cardinals fan.

All I can say about this game is it's a good week to have Warner in the playoffs
Sorry, KDawg.

i hope warner breaks a leg
no disrespect to cards fans, but i got three teams in the playoffs and i happen to face him in all three matchups…what are the odds
The beginning of the end of the misery
Break a leg???
How about a twisted ankle or something a little less serious!!! hahaha

Thanks for dropping by...
My question is: on a scale of 1 to 10, what is Fitzgerald worth to your team? Boldin? See the trade Calvin thread for why I’m asking this question.
The beginning of the end of the misery
Individually, Fitz and Boldin are 8's...
…together they’re 10’s (with Warner distributing the ball). Each player makes the other better as there’s too much talent and ability to cover them all and when the defense plays them well Steve Breaston or Early Doucet mops up. It doesn’t hurt that Warner and his incredible confidence is behind each pass as some of these balls a typical QB has no business throwing; but he knows he has two incredible WRs on the receiving end that will go get the ball.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
speaking of breaston
his contract is up this year isn’t it? do you stick w/ doucet & urban? or bring him back?
Urban is done, Doucet is still maturing
Breaston will be in the Cardinals’ future plans pending what becomes of Anquan Boldin and how much $$$ “Boobs” is looking for. There are rumblings he is looking for $2-$3 million/year which is quite economical compared to what Boldin would like ($8+ million). Clearly only one will can be afforded with Fitz’s $10 million/per salary. Breaston is a restricted FA (as is a lot of young talent with no CBA in place) so the Cards will get the veto ability; if someone wants to pay Boobs Al Davis money, he’s gone and the Cards work hard to secure Boldin for the remainder of his career. Doucet will make an apt #3.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
I like "Boobs", do you?
Both Fitzgerald and Warner offered to shave $1 million off their salaries to go towards signing Boldin to an extension. Apparently that’s note possible due to Player Union rules but the gesture is kind.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
Welcome to the Pride, Cards fans
I don’t hold much hope for this game, like many of us here. I think your horrible loss to the 49ers will only spur you guys on. This good be worse than the Ravens game….(I bloody well hope not).
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
Thanks for stopping by, Hawkwind!
Good luck in the game on Sunday!
