Stop With The Megatron Trade Talks...
....we had enough awful personnel decisions with Millen in office....
I realize that everyone has the right to their own point of view...their own opinion. However, I can't help but question the sanity of many Lions fans who are giddy at the idea of trading Calvin Johnson. Do you really want to improve this team? Last time I checked, it was a BAD idea to trade away one of the top 5 WRs in the game when you are trying hard enough to get talent to come to your city and play.
Need I remind you folks that it took us three freaking tries to get a solid WR in the draft? Need I remind you that he is one of the only reasons (besides Kevin Smith) that we have scored this season on offense? He opens up plays for others on offense automatically. It just truly blows my mind to hear Lions fans talk like this after all we've been through. It makes me question the effect that losing can have on one's mind.
If we get an offensive line and a defense worth watching, but Stafford has no one to throw the ball to.......what then? The Bears can tell you what it is like having no WRs to speak of......
For those of you wanting to trade Megatron, get a grip. And some patience. The desire for automatic satisfaction (and the crazy talk that comes with it) is wearing thin on many of us.
Calvin Johnson is a Lion....just like Andre Johnson is a Texan.....just like Adrian Peterson is a Viking....we've got the fact of the franchise...now we build around him....and Stafford....and K-Smith. Give it time. And when I say that, I mean more than one week.

It's not an invalid topic to discuss
In most years, for most teams, the thought of trading CJ would be pure lunacy. But it’s the Lions. The 0-16 Lions, and the probably 2-14 Lions this year.
Some fans want to talk about the idea of trading him because they think it will help our team become competitive and better situated for the long term good of the team.
And to point out one of your examples, How many playoffs have the Texans won? It takes more than one great player…
Just livin' the dream...
Riiight
So trading our most athletic and talented player that would be one of the only attractive attributes to our team that other talented veterans throughout the league would see as a reason to come to Detroit would make us “become competitive and better situated for the long term…” Oooookay. I mean, I know people are just looking for anything that could work for us, but this is not it.
The Texans have won a HELL of a lot more games than we have lately (and have been tons more competitive). That’s for damn sure. And it hasn’t been by trading away their best players. Mario Williams, Andre Johnson, Matt Schaub….still a part of their team. And they get better each year because they build around them. Now they have Brian Cushing….another promising rookie making them better.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
I just don't think Calvin will ever be Moss
Believe me, I like Calvin Johnson a lot. But receivers aren’t nearly the most important position on a team. In fact, I’d argue that receivers is the absolute LEAST important position on the team, at least in the shape of needing top tier talent. Look at the Colts. Who the hell has Peyton even been throwing to this season? And they’re undefeated. Same with the Saints really. Beside for Colston they don’t really have a top level talent. I know over the last two or three years they’re WR have made a name but really only because of Drew. Just look. A great quarterback — Peyton, Brady, Brees — can throw to ANYBODY. But bad QB’s can’t throw to anybody. Look at us with Calvin, or the Raiders with Moss or Buffalo with Owens (I know – I’m stretching it with Owens).
It’s not like Calvin is getting us 16 TD’s a year anyways. I mean I hate to lose 6’5" 4.35 40-time but we’re just not going to be good for sometime now and he’ll be slow by then and still unable to make big catches that somebody 7 inches taller than the guy defending him should be able to. He disappears from games or they overwork him a lot of times too.
So for these reasons, I’d say trade him for nothing less than two 1st rounders this year and one next year, if Mayhew can. If not, I definitely wouldn’t HATE to keep him.
Like I said, I like him for what he is now, which is a top 10 receiver but not top 5, and his potential to be the best of all-time. I wouldn’t be closed to the idea of getting three number 1’s for him. Realistically, that could be in the form of a DT, DE and LT. That would sure be nice to have a line to block with.

To be fair to Oakland
Moss didn’t try, at All.
I’m still shocked Oakland traded with NE (Seymour, for Oaklands #1) after Moss fleeced them so bad.

Ever heard of a guy called Reggie Wayne....
Pretty darn good receiver. So obviously, Peyton does have someone to throw to.

Not to mention Dallas Clark and Joseph Addai
Plus they have a couple of rookie named Garcon and Collie who are pretty fast and sure handed…..they have a ton of options on offense.
dont forget Gonzalez is on the shelf.....Damn thats alot of weapons
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
Exactly...

Question?
Is there any actual legs to the thought that the Lions would entertain trade offers for CJ or is this just something started by writers and fans as “our plan it fix the Lions”? I ask because I would have never even consider it unless the team was simply overwhelmed by an offer. So, where is all this talk coming from?
I can't believe I ate the whole thing!

Thats why Ive been saying trade him....
…….if you can get 31sts and 3 3rds why wouldt you trade him……Youd be dumb not too…..Like so many said hes just a wr and if you can get that for a wr you have to do it.

No legs...just sports writers and POD
When asked about the rumor, Schwartz said “we are trying to keep good players…not get rid of them”.

It's something to do.....
Most of us are way against trading CJ….and rightly so. However, if one of those once in a lifetime trade offers were to come our way……
That is the discussion.
If Calvin = Herschel Walker
Then let’s do it. I wouldn’t cry to see him on a great team. But unless we get more than he’s worth, no deal.
Yes, but...
If they openly came out and said they were looking to shop Calvin Johnson, people would low-ball them.

My point in trading Mega is....
……If you can get 3 ast round picks fro Mega why wouldnt you make that deal…..It would be dumb ot to……Hes a wr…..:Like so many people have said hes just a wr also saying its not the same as a qb or a de……Exactly, you dont win the super bowl with WR……You win with building a oline and dline and a QB….All ive been saying in all my pists is that mega is a top 5 wr and if you can get 3 1st round picks for that why woulnt you do it?….They wold be dumb not to get 3 1sts and 3 3rds…..If they didnt do that id be pissed.

Point well taken
You are right…we need lots of talent. and IF you got 3 starters to fix OL/DL OR an OBSCENE amount of draft picks, then anyone is for sale aside from Franchise QB’s.
but, that’s not going to happen. I know, I know “but it did with Herschel Walker”…yes, and that was 20 years ago and the NFL GM’s apparently learned their lesson.

Im not saying it will man....
……Im just saying that if you get that offer you cant turn it down……I love Mega but if you get that kind of offer you cant turn it down.

10 years ago.....
In 1999…..Washington Redskins GM Charlie Casserly was given an offer from then GM of the New Orleans Saints, Mike Ditka.
The offer was made for a swap of draft picks so that New Orleans could draft Ricky Williams. True, there was no marquis player like Calvin Johnson involved, but it is eerily similar in nature to the Herschel Walker trade. New Orleans gave up their round 1(12), 3(71), 4(107), 5(144), 6(179) and 7(218) plus their 1st and 3rd round picks in 2000 that became the 2nd and 64th overall for the Redskin’s round 1(5) in 1999, which they used to draft Ricky “Damn Right I Inhaled” Williams (pick number is in parenthesis).
Casserly went on to use only one of those picks acquired in 1999 (the 4th rounder) and traded all of the rest of the picks to the Bears and Broncos (what a coincidence). The Redskins got La’Var Arrington with pick 2 of the 2000 draft and a DB with the other pick acquired from NO in 2000. All in all, they only ended up with one great player out of the whole deal, but they did have a ton of leverage with the other picks (which they ended up using). For example, they moved back up to pick 7 in the 1st round to get Champ Bailey, by trading the Saints’ 1st rounder (among others) to the Bears. I don’t know the specifics of all that they did, but they were able to utilize their leverage and pick up some solid players.
This post is not meant to support either side of the argument, but rather to inform. I am quite on the fence on the issue, but I am leaning toward believing that if an offer like this or the Herschel Walker trade came to us, for the exchange of 1 Calvin Johnson, I think it would be better for the Lions in the long run if they took the deal. I would not trade Calvin Johnson for 2 first rounders. I would not trade him for 2 first rounders this year and 1 next year. I just do not think that 2 or 3 players will make enough of a difference to justify the loss of a player of CJ’s caliber. However, if we were to get 5 players and a ton of draft picks (like the Herschel Walker trade), or even basically all of another teams draft picks this year for 1 player (like the Ricky Williams deal), then I would say that it was a justified move of pure logic.
Know what I say about all this debate??
RIP
CJ isn’t going anywhere IMO but speculation is high as long as dickhead Sharp puts inane rumours out there so we talk incessantly about something that just won’t happen. It’s fun but pointless in my humble opinion.

In terms of WRs,
yes it is. How many times has dropped passes been posted on this site? BJ and Northcutt have done nothing all year. At least when CJ is healthy, he is a threat that demands a double team. The other two are average at best, and average ahsn’t got it done this year.
+1
The difference is not between WR’s and DL, WR’s and OL, etc. The difference is between GREAT players and players that are not great…….good, average, bad, failures, etc.
GREAT players don’t come along very often. Average players come along all the time. You can fill your roster with bodies. You can draft, sign free agents, sign UFA, grab waiver cuts, etc. Finding lots of average players can be done every day. Finding a brilliant gem like Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson, or Matthew Stafford is a rare and amazing thing, like having a 1-Lb diamond fall out of the sky and land in your hand. You don’t throw that diamond in the street.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
I don't know
This whole thing about trading has come down to a teams ability to draft another great wide reciever without having to sacrifice a high draft pick.
Top 10 recievers this year and draft postion:
1.Andre Johnson – 1st round pick 2.Reggie Wayne – 1st round pick
3.Wes Welker – Undrafted 4.Randy Moss – 1st round pick
5. Miles Austin – Undrafted 6.Santonio Holmes – 1st round pick
7.Sidney Rice – 2nd round pick 8.Steve Smith – 3rd round
9. Antonio Gates – Undrafted 10.Larry Fitzgerald – 1st round pick
All the consistent performers have been 1st – 3rd round picks EXCEPT Antonio Gates, who is just freakishly good. If Wes Welker does it for another 5 years I’ll say he’s consistent. Looks like the odds of drafting a good reciever are …. I’ll let you be the judge.
